Luke Mahon, Redcliffs – I live in Redcliffs and pass these every day. There is nothing wrong with them. I think they are great. Why do people around here always have to complain about things? It is not “prison-like” and I think everyone should be more grateful for the fact that it is completed. There are much more important things to consider than this and people should quit complaining about such stuff and seriously think of others more in need. John Turner, Redcliffs – Let us now be thankful and grateful for safe passage beside these former unstable cliffs. Also let us remember and thank the skilled workers of those enormous rock-moving machines who toiled for months beneath unstable rock faces. A testament to their skills is evident as you drive along beside what was known as Peacocks Gallop and view the beautifully stacked bunds of rocks soon to be covered in foliage. Let us not forget the costs involved for the whole project and a big thank you to the city council for involving local manufacturers. We need the fence to deter would be rock climbers. Colleen Palmer, Scarborough – Personally I like the look of it, it’s got to be this height to keep idiots out, and there are many. You can picture seeing tagging in the future if it was easy access, and of course falling off the rocks and harming themselves. We go by in the car and don’t really notice it, just think it’s lovely and tidy now. Get over it folks. Susan Jackson – I feel that the fence height is sensible – it’s there to prevent injury, not as a beautifying feature. Laurie Jones – I would like to congratulate the city council and the contractors for the excellent work erecting the fencing in Sumner and Redcliffs. I would imagine that the majority of the residents in the area would be of the same opinion. I find it hard to imagine the fence looking aggressive and as for comparing it with prison fencing, well say no more. Most stone churches have spear type railings. Would they feel so outraged by those fences, I think not. Let’s celebrate the progress and not focus on the negative. Last week we asked readers if they thought The Little Bistro be allowed to have outdoor seating after the city council told the restaurant to remove it. Karen Bradshaw – I just want to put my support forward for the Little Bistro to have outside seating on the pavement. Outside dining is all part of the French way for goodness sake. How precious is this council? We need to encourage the ambience of street dining in Akaroa particularly in the summer months. Give us a break or should I say give the Little Bistro a break. Victoria Andrews, Akaroa – The city council has withheld consent for the use of the footpath by the Little Bistro for outdoor dining. Narrow footpaths around Akaroa are often obstructed by outdoor dining, the display of retail merchandise and by sandwich boards. If the council is to be seen as being fair then it must monitor the lease situation in a evenhanded manner. Last week we asked readers if they thought a jumping platform should be installed at Magazine Bay to mitigate conflict between teenagers and yacht owners. Michele Laing – I am registering my support for a jumping platform from the wharf into the sea at Magazine Bay. There are plenty of activities for little children but teens/20s are often under represented in the community as far as activities are concerned. I think this would help to redress this imbalance. Young people require activities that have some risk and engage them with their environment. We see less petty crime in areas where young people are constructively engaged. People often are negative about their activities as they tend to be loud and high energy - a jumping platform is a fantastic outlet. My son was a student living in central Wellington – he would run downtown with his friends to jump off the inner harbour platform, then run back up the hill – a fun way to keep fit and let off some steam. A reader responds to last week’s story on emergency services meeting with residents to discuss tsunami’s in Sumner Bill Le Gros, Sumner – I was pleased to read a very sensible tsunami-related suggestion on the front page of your last publication. Go to your nearest hill, do not drive across the village, so avoiding being stuck in traffic like so many we saw in Japan who died in their vehicles. On the west side of Sumner we took comfort after the February 22, 2011, earthquake with the nearest hill option until the containers were moved to the unnecessary position near the end of Arnold St. The gaps between were wired across so preventing our access to the safe high ground behind the horse paddock, which at the time was still in use. Presumably because there are no rocks above to ever fall on it. After removing the containers to replace them with a 2m-high fence, surely it would have made sense to grade the area, than to detour the ugly fence round behind it to leave access to the only safe nearest hill for residents on the west side of Sumner. This could avoid the risk of being stuck in traffic trying to climb a possibly boulder blocked Evans Pass or a jam at Peacocks Gallop where a tsunami would hit first.
