goes back
for discussion
• By Noah Graham
THE PUBLIC will get a big say
on what changes will be made to
the controversial St Andrews Hill
Rd, Bridle Path Rd and Main Rd
intersection.
The city council is
looking to change the
layout and residents have
received a brochure in their
letterboxes outlining three
options.
Hill residents were
critical of changes to the
intersection when the
Ferrymead Bridge was
reconstructed during 2015.
The first option is to leave
the intersection as it is.
The second is to install new traffic
signals on St Andrews Hill Rd alongside
new pre-signals on Bridle Path
Rd.
The third is to introduce a no right
turn for Bridle Path traffic on to Main
Rd.
Intersection user and Cannon Hill
Cres resident Mike Morrison said
option two is the better option and
was the obvious choice.
Mr Morrison said a submission was
made to the city council when the
Ferrymead Bridge was reconstructed
which recommended traffic signals on
St Andrews Hill Rd.
He claims it would have
saved a lot of time, effort
and money if the city council
had listened to the original
recommendations.
The community wants the
new traffic signals installed
and leaving the intersection
as it is would be dangerous,
Mr Morrison said.
Sara Templeton Last week Mr Morrison
had a close call at the intersection
when he was making his way
into the city.
He said a motorist ran through one
of the red lights.
“They should not have run through
the red light, but the intersection did
not help.”
THE PEOPLE have spoken and
the city council has listened.
Good news on page 1 today –
it looks like the St Andrews Hill
Rd intersection at the bottom of
the hill will be changed.
Locals via Bay Harbour News
and other means tried to tell the
council they had got it wrong
when the changes were being
made, but they didn’t listen.
Only repeated articles and
drum-beating saw staff react,
and now it’s happening.
More consultation of course,
and that means things will drag
on, but at least a good result is
now in sight.
Local surfers and runners have
done well in their respective
‘Prison-style’ fencing to stay
• By Bridget Rutherford
REDCLIFFS RESIDENTS have
lost a battle to have “prisonstyle”
fencing changed.
However, they have received
an apology for the confusing
consultation process.
The city council installed 2m
high safety fences along the cliff
side of Main Rd to keep people
out of the dangerous rock-fall
area in November.
However, Redcliffs Residents’
Association was angry as it
thought the pool-style fencing
was too tall, and it had “prison
style” spikes on the top which
was not in the original plan.
The association wrote to the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board, requesting
it ask the city council to include
funding in the Annual Plan to
revise the extent and style of the
fencing.
It also criticised the consultation
process, saying the city
council had not listened to
residents’ requests to reduce
the height to 1.2m, and the
inclusion of spikes had not been
consulted on.
But in a Sumner Lyttelton
Corridor newsletter posted on
the city council website, city
services general manager Dave
Darrell Latham
Chris Doudney
Adamson apologised for the
confusion around the consultation
and justified why that fencing
was installed.
“We are sorry if there has
been confusion and angst
around some of the decisions
about the fencing.
“We assure you there has
never been any attempt to intentionally
mislead anyone.”
Mr Adamson said the city
council’s decision to install that
type of fencing was based on
safety, and expert advice.
INTRUSIVE: The spikes on top of the fencing was not part of the original
plan.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
It had to use the spear top
pool-fencing because it was
manufactured locally.
Residents’ association acting
chairman Chris Doudney said
he had not seen the newsletter,
and was not aware of other
members of the association seeing
it.
He said the issue lay with the
consultation process.
“They didn’t really consult
about anything really, they were
just telling us this is what we’re
going to do.”
Community board member
Darrell Latham said the fencing
was unlikely to be changed.
He said the city council needed
to ensure its communication
around consultation options
was correct and not subject to
misinterpretation in the future.
Fencing has been installed at
Moa Bone Point, and will also
be installed at Shag Rock Reserve
and Wakefield Ave, from
Nayland to Paisley Sts as part of
the Sumner Lyttelton Corridor
project.
Actors swap roles in popular
BRAND NEW TWIST: Nick Cheesebrough as Lady Marian and Sophia Benter-Lynch as Robin
Hood in a new adaptation for the Anthony Harper Summer Theatre production of Robin Hood.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
NICK CHEESEBROUGH has
played a wide scope of leading
roles – from the gentle Tinman
in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
to gambler Harry the Horse in
musical Guys & Dolls.
But never did he think he
would play what is traditionally
a leading lady role.
The 19-year-old of Purau
is playing a more masculine
version of Lady Marian in a new
adaptation of Robin Hood.
“I didn’t think I would be
playing a love interest anytime
soon,” he said.
A new production of the
English legend was created by
Daniel Pengelly for the city
council’s Anthony Harper
Summer Theatre production.
And the Riccarton House
grounds has transformed into
Sherwood Forest as the tale of
Robin Hood and her adventures
is brought to the city.
While most of the storyline
remains the same, the show has
a new twist with all characters’
genders roles being switched.
Cheesebrough describes his
reinvented character as a buff
jockey sort of guy with a few
insecurities.
The former Cashmere High
School student said his character
is still the damsel-in-distress
and the love interest of Robin
Hood.
“They meet by chance and
instantly have the look of love
and fall in love. Love at first site
. . . then it is Robin saving him
from the Sheriff of Nottingham,”
he said.
The show was inspired by
1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of
Thieves starring Alan Rickman
and Kevin Costner.
Classic characters such
as the infamous Sheriff of
Nottingham is played by Carrie
Green, Friar Tuck by Millie
Hanford and Robin Hood by
Sophia Benter-Lynch.
Benter-Lynch, of St Martins,
said it is an empowering play for
families – especially for those
taking their daughters.
“Even though Robin Hood is
a young woman she is still great
at leading this army. People
actually follow her and it is a
great message to the youth of
today,” she said.
Both Cheesebrough and
Benter-Lynch are members
of The Court Theatre Youth
Company.
Since graduating from Cashmere
has performed in several productions
for Canterbury University’s
in Showbiz Christchurch’s Evita.
Originally from Portsmouth,
England, Cheesebrough moved to
the city when he was 10 and hopes
to get into Toi Whakaari: New
Zealand Drama School based in
Wellington.
Benter-Lynch’s interest in
acting was first ignited when she
became obsessed with the film
The Sound of Music at eight-yearsold.
“I was like they are on stage
they having so much fun singing
and dancing and it is just like isn’t
this just a dream job to be able to
have fun for the rest of your life,”
A CHANGE:
The Robin
Redcliffs School move
• Noah Graham
OPPOSITION TO Redcliffs
School’s move to Redcliffs Park
is continuing to snowball.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Darrell Latham knows the relocation
of the school is a difficult
decision but says it is the wrong
one.
“From my perspective, Hekia
Parata (Education Minister) has
in many ways dealt the Redcliffs
community a poisoned chalice.”
From his perspective, the
Main Rd site was the best location
for the school and expert
advice provided to Ms Parata
proved it was safe, he said.
He could not understand why
the ministry had decided to
move the school from Main Rd
to an area that was susceptible
to coastal erosion, contaminated
land and tsunamis.
The community was thrilled
Redcliffs School would stay
open, but it would come at a
“tricky cost,” Mr Latham said.
He said Ms Parata decided
Redcliffs Park would be suitable
as the new site.
However, Friends of Redcliffs
Park chairwoman Simi Desor
said there was nothing wrong
with the original school site.
“The old school site is perfectly
safe and perfectly fine to keep,”
she said.
“If the school is the heart of
the community, that particular
park is really the soul of the
community and we would like to
preserve the park.”
National list MP Nuk Korako
respects some members of the
community have a preference for
the original site but the advice
received by the Ministry of Education
points to Redcliffs Park
being a better site for a school.
“The ministry will be working
with Christchurch City Council
children Reva, 1,
with member Chris
Doudney. They want
the park to stay as
it is.
to acquire the land, and that will
involve consultation with the
land owners,” he said.
Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson
reflected many of the views expressed
by the community.
She said there was no logical
reason for the school to be
rebuilt at Redcliffs Park.
“There is no reason behind the
[decision].”
Redcliffs Residents’ Association
chairman Chris Doudney
is one of several people trying to
fight the ministry’s decision.
He said it would save time and
money if the school stayed at its
original site and the community
could continue using the park.
“It’s a waste of a site and a
waste of money.”
Heathcote Ward councillor
Sara Templeton said she had
received a lot of contact from
residents who are motivated to
make a submission since the
consultation had started.
“I’m expecting good
numbers at the two drop-in
sessions and am looking
forward to hearing what they
have to say.”
She said the consultation
does not close until February
23 which gives residents a
good opportunity to have their
say.
“It’s a difficult intersection
with difficult geography and I
know that any decision will be
robustly debated.”
Residents will have their
chance to voice their opinions
this evening from 4.30-6pm
Gondola images now online
• By Noah Graham
TWO CAMERAS installed
on the gondola to give people
a snapshot of the conditions
on the Port Hills are now
operational.
Every 10min, the Summit
Road Society’s website is updated
with an up-close photograph of
the hills which allows residents
to look through the day’s footage
and prepare for the conditions
before they make their trip up.
One camera faces east towards
Godley Head while the other
gives a western view towards the
Sign of the Kiwi and Gebbies
Pass.
Summit Road Society board
member Hamish Grant is delighted
with the cameras and the
effect they are already having.
He said the cameras deliver
a clear view of the hills and a
chance to spot any bad weather
which could ruin a day out.
As an avid cyclist and Port
Hills regular, Mr Grant said the
new cameras are “very useful”
for the community of people
who like to walk, run and cycle
up the hills.
It allows people to prepare and
dress accordingly before they
hike up the hills, Mr Grant said.
He said the cameras are an important
addition as the weather
is often completely different
when compared to the rest of the
city.
Mr Grant is the driving force
behind the cameras which were
installed six months ago and
took a “long time” before they
were available to the public.
He admits the decision to get
the cameras up and running
cam from a “slightly selfish” side
but he believes they are, and will
be, a huge benefit to the community.
The images can be seen on the
Yacht club’s $1.17m shed
BAY HARBOUR
PAGE 7
• By Tom Doudney
Trevor Kite
THE Christchurch Yacht Club
is hoping it will soon get the go
ahead for a new rowing shed
to replace the one demolished
after the June 2011 earthquake.
The Moncks Bay-based club
wants to build a new $1.17
million shed in
a more seaward
position to allow
room for the
Coastal Pathway
walking and
cycle route between
it and the
road. Building
the shed further
seaward means higher costs.
The club already has resource
consent and a building permit
for the new shed. It has also
asked the city council to
contribute $327,595 towards
the extra costs associated with
providing for the Coastal Pathway,
along with an additional
$239,713 because the public
will have use of the shed’s
decks and ramps.
The club has raised $607,000
so far, and has carried out soil
testing.
It has met with both the
city council and the Coastal
Pathway group over the last
two months and expects to
get a response from the city
council soon.
Once funding has been
secured, work could begin
almost immediately and
would take about 10 months to
complete.
The new shed would be 5.5m
further seaward, enlarging the
space for a public walking and
cycle route between it and the
road from 1m to 4m.
The club’s shed and
boardwalk project convener
Trevor Kite said the proposal
was a win-win scenario for the
club and community.
“Although we have the
right to put the shed back as
it was, to have done so would
have denied the community
the chance to walk past there
except for a little track,”
he said.
“It has been identified as the
major obstacle for completing
the Coastal Pathway between
Ferrymead and Sumner.”
Mr Kite said the club would
function much better when
it could once again provide a
shed for members to store boats
in.
WRECKED: The
Christchurch Yacht
Club’s rowing shed
was demolished
following the June
2011 earthquake,
which was centred
less than 200m
away.
This would also help with
traffic and parking in the area,
as members would not have to
bring their boats with them on
trailers.
The shed had already been
damaged in the February 2011
earthquake and was deemed
unsafe following the magnitude
6.3 quake in June that year,
which was centred less than
200m away.
The clubrooms were
also damaged by the 2011
earthquakes, although they are
still able to be used and will be
rebuilt at a later date.
Fast internet for harbour settlements
AKAROA AND Diamond
Harbour are among 151
towns which will get
ultra-fast broadband
installed before 2024,
the Government has
announced.
The $300 million programme
will allow 85 per
cent of New Zealanders to
have access to fibre within
eight years – more than the
Government’s original goal
of 80 per cent by 2022.
Selwyn MP Amy Adams
said faster broadband had
incredible power to change
the ways people grew their
businesses and connected
with each other, as well as
how health and education
needs were met.
“What it really means
is that you no longer have
to choose between living
in the beautiful parts of
Selwyn [electorate] like
Diamond Harbour, Darfield,
Leeston and Rakaia,
or being close to jobs and
good schools and good
healthcare, actually you can
do both,” she said.
“The way high speed
connectivity makes that
possible is, I think, the
equivalent of the way
opening up the railroads
changed the reality for
rural and provincial worlds
back in the early part of last
century. I don’t think we
can even begin to imagine
all of the ways this will be
used in years to come.”
Communications Minister
Simon Bridges, who
took over the portfolio
from Adams in December,
said the second phase of the
UFB rollout would provide
up to 423,000 more New
Zealanders with access to
“world class broadband.”
The first phase of the
rollout focused mostly on
larger cities and, at last
count, around 300,000
people had access to fibre
internet connections.
Once the installations
are completed, Wellington
will have the greatest access
to UFB, with 95.4 per cent
coverage. Northland will
have the least access, at 53.5
per cent.
CONNECTED: Akaroa
and Diamond Harbour
will get access to
ultra-fast fibre
broadband before 2024.
Your Local Views
History provides strong future
Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson
talks about
Lyttelton’s
history
How many times
over the last six
years have you heard someone
(even yourself) ask – “What used
to be there?”
With the number of buildings
that we have lost, I feel it’s really
important to have easy and
accessible information about
what used to be in these now
vacant or newly built on sites.
And it’s the same with local
identities – remembering them
and their contribution is important
too. It helps build a sense of
place and community.
I have seen so many visitors
to Lyttelton look at the beautiful
photos on London St, taken by
Jae Renaut.
Who would have imagined all
those years ago when he took
those photos that they would
be some of the enduring images
of buildings no longer there.
Beautiful and significant buildings
like the Harbour Light, the
Salvation Army Barracks and
the Lyttelton Council building.
Likewise, it was really lovely
to see the plaque unveiled to
commemorate the 105 th anniversary
of the founding of
MEMORIES:
Buildings such as the
former Harbourlight
Theatre and the
Colletts Chemist
site are of significant
historical importance
to Lyttelton.
Colletts Chemist on the corner
of London and Oxford Sts.
The community board deserves
our thanks for supporting this
plaque and I certainly hope that
it is the first of many to recognise
other community leaders and
contributors.
Some of the plaques could be
more beneficial if they had a
story board with me, so that locals
and visitors alike could read
a bit of the history of the person
or building.
Perhaps other areas in the city
could think about doing a similar
project to Lyttelton?
Very little of our history is
accessible to the average visitor
and I think that it would give us
a positive point of difference to
many other areas as we compete
for the tourist visitors.
What do you think?
Economy driving
wage and job growth
National List
MP Nuk Korako
talks about
what to expect
in election year
Happy New Year.
As we head
into election year, people will be
considering whether they think
New Zealand is heading in the
right direction. To me the answer
is a resounding yes.
New Zealand tops the world
rankings as the least corrupt
country on earth, the most prosperous
country and the easiest
place to do business.
The economy continues to
grow, driving wage and job
growth, and allowing us to lift
the minimum wage ahead of inflation
again. Tourism has grown
by 8.4 per cent in Canterbury in
the last year, and with the opening
of major attractions such
as the Christchurch Adventure
Park, I expect that growth to
increase.
We have work under way on
multiple cycleways throughout
the Port Hills – in particular the
Sumner to City cycleway will
be enjoyed by commuters and
recreational cyclists alike.
But this year is not just about
the election. There is plenty of
work to do in the Port Hills. I
will be continuing to monitor the
situation with Redcliffs School, as
the Ministry of Education works
to get construction of the new
school under way, and advocate
to lower the speed in school
zones.
I have been involved with the
Heathcote River, but there is
more work to be done on this,
and other environmental issues
within the Port Hills.
The issues caused by
Christchurch City Council’s
handling of Coastal Hazards
have not gone away, and I will
continue to advocate for an
outcome that is satisfactory to
coastal residents.
We also need to keep working
on bringing cruise ships back to
Lyttelton. It is really important
that we take a regional approach
to this issue, acknowledging
not just the benefits to the Port
Company and to Lyttelton, but to
all of Christchurch.
And as always, I am available
to help with constituent issues
and concerns, whether it be dealing
with Government departments,
EQC issues, or hearing
your ideas on how we can make
our communities even better.
SPORTS
IN FORM: Craig Primmer was instrumental with both bat and
ball in Heathcote’s final twenty20 round robin match.
Semi-final spot
for Heathcote
• By Gordon Findlater
HEATHCOTE’S 2A team have
pulled off two final day victories
to qualify for the Barry Hadlee
Series semi-finals.
They will now take on East
Christchurch Shirley at Burwood
Park tomorrow for a spot
in Monday’s final.
After starting their metro
cricket twenty20 campaign with
two loses from three games,
Heathcote’s only chance of
qualifying for the semi-finals
was to win both of their final
two games and by a comfortable
margin.
Burnside West Christchurch
University were their first test on
Saturday and Heathcote didn’t
muck around setting an imposing
total batting first. Opener
Matt Mealings carried the innings
with an unbeaten knock
of 90 to help his side through to
169/7 from their 20 overs.
Heathcote’s bowlers backed
Mealings’ effort in the second
innings as they restricted the
opposition to 124/5 to secure the
45-run victory.
The result meant that Heathcote
now need to defeat Merivale
Papanui in their afternoon
match. However, a result itself
would not be enough.
Going into the match Merivale
Papanui occupied the second
and final play-off spot in pool
two of the competition. They
had one more win that Heathcote
and also held a significant
net run rate advantage.
With a big win required, time
was of the essence when Heathcote
went into bat. Mealings
once again set the tone at the top
of the innings, backing up his
unbeaten 90 with a quick fire 80
which included eight fours and
five sixes.
Craig Primmer then came to
the crease later in the innings,
clearing the boundary four
times before being bowled for
60 as Heathcote finished on a
monster total of 213/3.
They now needed to dismiss
Merivale Papanui cheaply to
secure, and the bowlers rose to
the occasion. Primmer backed
up his half century with two
wickets, while David Stack,
Neranga Jayaweera and Tom
Clay also chipped in with two
wickets each to dismiss Merivale
Papanui in the 19th over for just
91 runs.
The 128-run win was more
than enough to secure second
spot in pool two for Heathcote.
Both Merivale Papanui and
Sydenham finished with the
same competition points. However,
Heathcote’s dominant final
day meant they held a superior
net run rate.
JANUARY WAS a busy month
for juniors at the Sumner
Running Club who competed at
a number of events around the
country.
The year opened with the
Lovelock Classics in Timaru
where Caleb Sutter, 11, and
John Wells, 13, both captured
victories.
Caleb won the 11-year-old
boys 100m sprint in a time of
13.73sec. He then finished second
on the long jump, his jump
of 3.93m saw him finish just two
centimetres behind the winner.
Caleb also competed in the shot
SPRINTER: Luca Tracey travelled to Hastings
to take part in the North Island Colgate games
where he finished sixth in the 200m final.
put where he completed the podium
with a throw of 6.45m to
finish third. John ran away with
the 800m title in Timaru with
a blistering time of 2min 27sec.
He also competed in the shot put
where he finished fifth.
John then joined fellow Sumner
junior Beth Hunter, 13, at the
South Island Colgate games in
Invercargill. Competitors faced
wet and windy conditions down
south. Beth finished fourth in
the high jump and 800m event
and fifth in the 400m. John also
had a strong weekend, finishing
sixth in the 400m and eighth in
the 80m hurdles.
Sumner’s Luca Tracey competed
in the 200m 11-year-old boys at
the North Island Colgate games
where he won his heat and went
on to finish the final in sixth.
Tim Ward, 14, and Victoria
Wells, 16, also went to Dunedin
to represent Canterbury in the
grade 14-18 inter-provincials
against Queensland, Otago and
Southland.
Tim helped Canterbury retain
the shield for grade 14-15 by a
margin of 2000 points, Victoria’s
16-18 team won by a narrow
16-point margin.
Low pressure system whipped up
bigger waves than Cyclone Pam
• Aaron Lock
IT SEEMS as
though the
weather has
finally settled
down and
perhaps the
first large,
high pressure
system will centre over the
southern part of the country
this week.
The southern ocean is still
quite active with plenty of
south-westerly swells pushing
north.
The spring-like weather last
month has had a silver lining
in the fact that there have been
plenty of waves around.
Consistent southerly swells
have been pushing up the
coast and each north-west to
south-west change has been
preceded by a fun north swell
for the city beaches. Taylors
and the Scarborough breakwater
have had some great waves.
The last big low pressure
system whipped up one of the
biggest north swells in a long,
long time. Bigger than Cyclone
Pam, although a lot messier.
The Environment Canterbury
buoy off Banks Peninsula
peaked at an average wave
height of 5.5m, with 11.5m
waves recorded from the
north-east.
There were waves breaking
in places they shouldn’t – I saw
some rollers breaking up the
shipping channel in Lyttelton
Harbour.
For most of the day on ‘big
Sunday,’ it was too big and
messy to surf, but once the
wind swung offshore, the
swell became organised and
there where some big bombs at
Taylors and Scarborough for
the brave.
The water is still pretty
chilly only 17 deg C. February
is normally the month of our
warmest ocean temperatures
so hopefully we can get at least
Aaron's surf report
a few weeks of 20 deg C water.
The National Surf Championships,
presented by Health
2000, were held in Piha this
month. Raglan’s Billy Stairmand
won his sixth open
men’s title.
A small crew of local surfers
ventured north with some
great success. Harrison Whiteside
made the open quarterfinals.
Lucy Temoananui put
in a great performance to
place second in the women’s
SUP division. She was leading
most of the final and was close
to victory but her rival from
Gisborne scored the winning
wave in the last five minutes.
Alan Temoananui surfed
well in the competitive over-28
men’s division to place fourth
in the final.
Ava Henderson put in a
great performance in the under-14
girls’ section, winning
all her heats on the way to the
final.
Henderson placed second in
a tightly contested final. Her
mum, Donna, put in a last
minute entry into the over-30s
women’s event and ended up
winning her first national title.
The waves were pretty big and
challenging for most of the
week.
The South Island circuit
begins this month with the
Cape Classic in Westport
on February 24 and 25. Locally,
the Malfunction at New
Brighton will be on February
18. We are heading into what
is normally our best time of
year for waves, so get out there
and make the most of it.
SPORTS
SWELL DONE. Local surfer Alan Temoananui rode the waves well to grab fourth place in the
over-28 men’s section at the National Surf Championships in Piha last month. Meanwhile, Ava
Henderson came second in the under-14 girls’ section.
A fortnight. One month. Two
months. How much time and
patience does one need to have
a porcelain crown or a ceramic
dental restoration nowadays?
At Merivale Dental Group, they
acknowledge people have hectic
lifestyles juggling work and family
life leaving little time for multiple
dental appointments.
CEREC same-day dental crowns
and implants are the most modern
technology available in dental
restoration. They are one of a few
practices in Christchurch being
able to manufacture and place
ceramic restorations by taking a 3D
digital scan of your teeth. The tooth
is then designed on clever software
and sculpted by a milling unit which
allows them to produce beautiful,
strong porcelain restorations in
the one appointment. This means
no temporary restoration and no
second visit for their patients.
Merivale Dental Group has
the latest and state-of-the-art
Omnicam CEREC unit. Dentists
David Rowley and Jenny Kim
believe that the advances of digital
dentistry are the way of the future
and pride themselves in producing
strong long lasting restorations.
Behind all beautiful, swift dental
restorations should be firm healthy
gums covering the pearly whites.
When it comes to focussing on
having fantastic oral health, it is very
easy for us to forget gum health.
Megan Smith and Petria Waitzer
are the friendly and experienced
dental hygienists at Merivale Dental
Group. They are both passionate
about prevention and treatment
of gum disease and provide gentle
but thorough removal of plaque,
stains, and tartar build-ups. Since
prevention is better than cure, they
are dedicated to helping you perfect
your homecare technique and aid
in sorting out any problems before
they get worse.
Merivale Dental Group offers
a full range of dental services
and they would love to help you
out with all your dental needs. If
you would like more information
on their friendly practice, please
