Good local policing involves good<br />

communication to their respective<br />

community – and often the best<br />

medium is the local newspaper.<br />

But in the case of the Lyttelton<br />

police that isn’t so.<br />

Today, we again reveal frustration<br />

over policing in Lyttelton.<br />

It’s not the first time we’ve covered<br />

this issue. Last year residents<br />

went public with concerns in <strong>Bay</strong><br />

<strong>Harbour</strong> News over thefts, breakins<br />

and petty crime. But could we<br />

get the local police to respond? No.<br />

Now residents are collecting<br />

crime data themselves online and<br />

asking for remedies from the people<br />

who respond.<br />

We again asked Lyttelton police<br />

for a response.<br />

But local police can’t respond<br />

directly apparently. We had to go<br />

through a media centre, who got<br />

a Canterbury-based inspector to<br />

comment.<br />

It’s about time the police got local<br />
