Scholarship for Port Hills researcher AKAROA’S Steffan Kraberger has received a $10,000 scholarship to help him work on his thesis about making the Port Hills resistant to fire. Mr Kraberger received the Freemasons postgraduate scholarship to assist with completing a part-time Master of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, which he will work on over three years. He previously studied a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Victoria University. Between then and going to Lincoln University, he went overseas on a three-year working holiday. During that time, he worked in Chile breeding cacti and aloe vera, and in France at Taktyk, a landscape urban design firm in Paris. • By Caitlin Miles TIRELESS EFFORTS to look after Drayton Reserve and keep it tidy have not gone unnoticed – the volunteers have been nominated for a Green Ribbon Award. Redcliffs Residents’ Association member David Bryce and his team of volunteers have been nominated in the protecting biodiversity category of the awards for their On returning to Akaroa, Mr Kraberger started his own company sub-contracting his landscape design services to fund his study. He has volunteered with Akaroa’s Garden of Tane scenic reserve and as secretary of its reserve management committee, has led local school children in working bees and developed their interest in native trees. He has also carried out practical work upgrading walking tracks and planting native trees within the reserve and throughout Banks Peninsula.
