Korako’s signs breach rules
• By Gabrielle Stuart
PORT HILLS National list MP
Nuk Korako has been ordered
to take down several of his signs
because they are too big.
He is one of several candidates
cross Christchurch sent
letters by the city council ordering
them to take down signs
which break advertising rules.
Outside the election period,
candidates have to follow city
council rules, which ban any
signs taller than 90cm or wider
than 60cm unless they have
special consent.
Bigger signs of up to 3 sq m
are allowed between July 22 and
September 22.
Mr Korako said he was not
aware of the rules until he was
contacted by the city council.
He said he had no complaints
about his signs last election.
He said he had taken down
some signs, including some
large ones on Dyers Pass Rd,
but had left others up in commercial
areas, where he believed
they did not break the rules.
“The council has got a job to
do, but they’ve been really good
about it, they don’t come down
on you with a hammer,” he said.
There are also rules around
election advertising, which is
only allowed during the election
TOO BIG: National MP Nuk Korako has been ordered to take down billboards this size on some
residential streets because they break city council rules.
period.
But Mr Korako said his
billboards were advertising his
office, not asking for votes, so
he believed they did not break
the rules.
City council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston
said complaints had been made
about 10 different election signs
so far this year, and some of
them were still under investigation.
But she would not say who
the signs belonged to, or if
other candidates had also been
warned.
She said the majority of the
signs were in residential areas
and broke the rules because of
their size and content.
Christchurch Central Labour
candidate Duncan Webb also
had to take down several of his
signs, because they were too big.
He said he had seen dozens of
other non-compliant signs up
all over the city, but he was told
by a city council worker that the
rules were usually only enforced
if someone complained.
“So it comes down to people
who might not agree with my
politics complaining about my
signs,” he said.
In Brief
TIDE PUTS OUT FIRE
The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
has found a new way to put out
fires – let the tide take care of it. The
crew was called to Boulder Bay near
Taylors Mistake at about 10.40pm
on Monday after reports of a fire
on the beach. They found a small
pile of building material ablaze and
decided to let the incoming tide take
care of it. A fire communications
spokesman said it was great that
mother nature could help.
DISASTER PLAN MEETING
A disaster response team set up
in Redcliffs is planning another
meeting on July 12 to look at the
answers from a recent survey. The
survey asked residents to answer
questions about the response to the
tsunami warning and what they
think is important when planning
for future events. A community
emergency hub is also in the
process of being set up, but it does
not yet have a physical address. To
get involved in the group, email
