DIG IN: The guests enjoyed the three-course meal that was put on to celebrate the
success of the market.
TO CELEBRATE the
community working together to
create the Mt Pleasant Farmers’
Market, a long lunch was held to
celebrate its birthday.
The market was set up six
years ago to support people
after the February 22, 2011,
earthquake – and it’s still going,
offering the same support.
With no supermarkets close
by and a limited amount of food
and water available, Mt Pleasant
resident Tom Davies decided to
set up a market to help people
get what they needed.
Since it started the market’s
key role has shifted a little.
While there isn’t an emergency
associated with it any more, it
still provides people with what
they need.
The long lunch was held to
celebrate this and involved fresh
produce often sold at the market
through a three-course meal
created by local chef Kris Buist.
Event organiser Linda Rutland
said: “Kris was incredible, she
produced the most wonderful
meal for 60 people under
difficult personal circumstances.
The devotion to her community
and her professionalism
was incredible,” Ms Rutland
said.
A team of volunteers helped in
the kitchen and served the food.
Residents dine out to celebrate farmers’ market
played for the guests and The
Estuary Trust hired native
greenery from Trees for
Canterbury as their contribution.
Ms Rutland said even after all
this time the market was still
widely used by locals.
She said since the event was
such a success, they are now
planning for next year’s event.
Money raised from the lunch
has gone back into the market to
help improve it.
