Redcliffs architect behind Linwood redesign

A REDCLIFFS architect will
lead the redesign of Linwood
College.
Architectus director Carsten
Auer will be the project manager
in the school’s full redevelopment
and rebuild.
His previous work includes
Lyttelton Primary School’s master
plan, the city’s Innovation
Precinct spatial framework, St
Cuthbert’s College performing
arts centre and Auckland Grammar
School’s sports complex.
Mr Auer said schools were
more than places to learn – they
helped shape the identity of the
community.
So any design had to reflect
that and the values and culture
of the community.
“This project is special not only
for its scale, but in particular for
the strong pedagogical vision
developed by the college and the
leadership role it is looking to
undertake in the revitalisation of
the eastern suburbs of Christchurch.”
He said the project was
personal for him as he lived
in Redcliffs, which was part of
Linwood’s catchment, and he
wanted to contribute to shaping
the future of the school.
“I believe the current college
leadership is working successfully
to rebuild the confidence of
all of their community in what
Linwood College has to, and can,
offer.”
Architectus’ other projects
include the bus interchange, St

Andrew’s chapel, the central
city’s new Knowledge Centre,
and more than 30 school projects
across the country.
Linwood principal Richard
Edmundson said the awarding of
the contract was a step forward.

“We’re absolutely delighted
to have someone of Carsten’s
reputation and his work in
understanding communities and
how buildings can support the
community,” he said.
“It’s Linwood’s turn.”
The school’s buildings
have reached the end of their
lifespan, and it has carried out
significant consultation with the
community on how it could look
and feel better.
Mr Edmundson said the
current roll was 650, but the
master plan was being done for
1800.
It wants to become the school
of choice for students living in
its catchment, including Sumner,
Redcliffs, Mt Pleasant, and
Lyttelton, many of whom travel
to schools on the other side of
town.
