Woolston Brass has role
in world contest success
CHRISTCHURCH musicians
feature prominently in the
National Brass Band of New
Zealand, which was named
runner-up in the brass band
section of the World Music
Contest.
A third of the band members
are from Christchurch, with all
but one playing for Woolston
Brass.
The contest is held every
four years in Kerkrade, the
Netherlands. The New Zealand
band’s programme opened
with Whakarangatiratanga,
•From page 1
Dr Latham was unaware of
the plans to install a new section
of barrier south of the bend.
“It would have been good
if the community board
were updated and advised
accordingly. We haven’t had
an update regarding the latest
measures and that would have
commissioned from New
Zealand composer Gareth Farr.
The programme also featured
a new major work written for
the band by renowned English
composer Peter Graham. The
39 th Parallel is based on the
landscape and mythology of
the Wanganui region in
memory of brass band icon
Kevin Jarrett.
The band performed concerts
in Stein, the Netherlands,
and Aachen, Germany, before
returning to New Zealand last
week.
Barrier for fatal crash site
been nice.”
Aaron Haymes, city council
transport operations manager,
said the barriers will be in place
by February 2018.
“We will then consider
continuing the (southern
barrier) a further 160m, which
will require additional approval
and funding,” he said.
Clash over intersection
in Redcliffs School battle
• By Sarla Donovan
THE INTERSECTION of
Main Rd and Beachville Rd has
become a new factor in the battle
over a new Redcliffs School site.
Friends of Redcliffs Park chairwoman
Simi Desor said the lack
of clarity around what would
happen with the potentially dangerous
Beachville Rd intersection
was a real concern.
“The process has not been
transparent and many people
aren’t happy about it. Changes to
the intersection, signage, lights -
who will pay for it? None of that
has been explained.”
Public consultation on the
Ministry of Education proposal
to rebuild the school on Redcliffs
Park, creating a land swap with
the old school site, closed on June
26.
A hearing panel has been
appointed to work through the
800 submissions received. The
panel would then make a recommendation
to the city council
on whether to go ahead with the
land swap.
But Redcliffs School Board of
Trustees chairman Darren Fidler
said Mrs Desor’s concerns were
unfounded because a decision
CONTROVERSIAL: The Beachville Rd intersection has been
called potentially dangerous for children going to the potential
new Redcliffs School site at Redcliffs Park.
had yet to be made on whether
the relocation would go ahead.
He said once the ministry
had certainty, it would do “a lot
more work”, including specifics
around buildings and transport.
“This includes (how to manage)
the traffic. At this stage,
there are no traffic issues in
Redcliffs that are any worse than
elsewhere in Christchurch or
New Zealand.”
Because the school would likely
back onto the coastal pathway,
he said pupils who could get onto
that would be able to access the
school via walking or scooting.
The current controlled crossing
on Main Rd could also be
continued.
“There are simple solutions to
these concerns. The school and
board are committed to getting
our kids to and from school
safely. We want to work with
residents on this.”
Dr Fidler said the possibility of
closure would be back on the table
if the land swap was declined
and nobody wanted that.
