Terminal plan met with petition

week the community board had
asked for the meeting after the
newspaper revealed two weeks
ago the LPC’s decision to reduce
bus parking spaces to one and not
provide a pick-up/drop-off zone.
Diamond Harbour Residents
Association chairman Richard
Suggate told a board meeting last
week that the LPC’s refusal to
provide a drop-off zone would
force the infirm, disabled or
with heavy parcels, to walk from
Norwich Quay.
He said the ferry was the only
link for Diamond Harbour residents
if there were road closures
and access should be suitable for
people with disabilities, the elderly
and very young, “including
not having to use steps or walk
long distances.”
Port company chief executive
Peter Davie said LPC staff met
with the Banks Peninsula Community
Board on July 31.
“At that meeting staff showed
board members the plans for
the Diamond Harbour ferry
upgrade and changed access for
the buses. Our plans have not
changed since presenting them
to the Community Board in July.
“At the July meeting we explained
to the community board
that there will be a reduction in
space for the buses to park. LPC

services. This will not affect
ferry users at all.
“An upgrade of the existing
Diamond Harbour Ferry
facilities will take place at the
same time as the LPC staff car
park is being built adjacent to
Waterfront House, the new LPC
operations building. The work
should be completed before
Christmas.
“After the upgrade, the existing
ferry facilities will be significantly
better in terms of amenity
and safety. The upgrade also
includes direct stair access onto
the Oxford St overbridge, which
people can use to get to the ferry.

people that the bridge is for port
traffic and buses only. We are

goods off or who are physically

Cruises to enable people to have
access. If there are particular
items that require to be around
50m closer to the ferry terminal
than they can achieve via the
stairs, then we will accommodate
them through the port,’’ Mr

Sumner swimming pool
faces funding shortfall
LEAKS IN the Sumner
community pool have been fixed
ahead of the November opening
– but the pool committee is now
nearly $7000 in the red.
An application to the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board’s discretionary fund to
help it cover the cost was declined,
as the repairs are considered
capital works and don’t fit
the fund’s criteria.
The pool committee is now
looking for other funding sources
to help cover the $6688 cost.
Most of the running costs for
the community-owned and managed
pool come from key rental,
with about 360 keys available for
local families to rent at $150 a
season.
Committee member Liz Beaglehole
said the leaks had to be
fixed as they were pushing up the
operational costs of heating and
chlorinating water.
She was confident of finding
other avenues of funding.
The pool, which is used by local
school and community groups
and families, is run by a committee
of volunteers.
It opens for the summer season
on November 11 at 7am.
