Mr McGrath, of The Eastern, will be performing a solo acoustic set of original songs. The show will start at noon and run for an hour. It is open to all ages and is free. The new community centre, earmarked for Colombo St in 2017, is in the design process which will be put out for public consultation on May 27. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson is on the working party and said there will be no pool at the new centre. “The Edgeware pool group will take up that slack. It would have been great to have them co-existing on the same site, but we don’t have the room to do both,” he said. St Albans Pavilion and Pool Incorporated were sold the Edgeware Pool site, at 43 Edgeware Rd, for $1 in February. It plans to build a 25m outdoor pool and a smaller covered learners pool. The site is less than 250m from the St Albans centre and will cater for the community’s aquatic needs. Mr Davidson said even if fellow board member Pauline Cotter’s request for the city council to buy land at 130 Caledonian Rd went ahead there still wouldn’t be enough room. “We need to consider parking and the other amenities the community wants. Also the zoning would be very hard to get around to put a pool in there,” he said. While the pool is off the table there has been talk about a theatre being included in the design. “A movie theatre, like the one that used to be on the new SuperValue site in Edgeware, has been discussed,” Mr Emma Twaddell Mike Davidson Davidson said. I am all for spaces that can be used for several different things so if it could be used for productions as well that would be great,” she said. She said while the new centre is built they will have to relocate off-site. “We are having a meeting on Wednesday with the city council to decide were to go while the new centre is built,” she said. CAR CRASH A woman was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries after being involved in a car crash on Thursday in Burnside. St John arrived at the scene on Russley Rd at about 7.15pm. Two vehicles were involved in the crash. MITRE 10 BUILDING COLOUR Mitre 10 Mega in Papanui will change the colour on the south side of the building from orange to an off-white, after complaints from residents. Concerns were raised the orange would clash with the surrounding environment. Papanui-Shirley Community Board chairman Mike Davidson spoke to the owner about changing the colour which he agreed to. It is currently being repainted.
