Peppers Clearwater Resort Lakes Restaurant’s senior chef de partie Drew Weeda’s entry, Out of this Earth, has earned her a New Zealand Vegetarian Dish Challenge Excellence Award plaque. Chefs are challenged to create delicious and inspired meals from one of the three categories of breakfast or brunch, lunch and dinner or fine dining. Ms Weeda’s said she wanted to create a dish that would showcase some of their wonderfully versatile root vegetables. “I teamed up baby turnips and beetroot with goat cheese balls and dehydrated kale. The cubed tofu was dusted with beetroot powder, which provided a lovely delicate flavour, and gently fried then topped with a raspberry reduction,” she said. This is not only her first entry into the challenge but her first time entering any cooking competition and she is delighted to have her creative talents recognised. “I grew up with a vegetarian sister and a chef for a dad, so I have spent many years not only eating vegetarian food but preparing it,” she said. The winners of the three categories, announced in July, will each be awarded a winner’s plate. Competition organiser and food services consultant Pip Duncan said as plant based diets continue to grow in popularity, chefs need to provide a greater range of choice of vegetable dishes. “Chefs are being called upon to create imaginative and tasty vegetable dishes,” he said. NOR’WEST NEWS Tuesday June 14 2016 11 SPORTS Moascar Cup up for grabs • By Gordon Findlater ST ANDREW’S College will look to retain the Moascar Cup when they host Timaru Boys’ High School today. The cup is the schoolboy rugby equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield with its history going back to World War I. Mounted on a piece of a wooden propeller from a German aircraft shot down in Palestine, the trophy was first played for between British, New Zealand and Australian troops camped in Moascar, Egypt, following the war. Bought into the country by the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Unit and Depot which had won the cup, it was gifted to New Zealand Rugby Union on the condition it be a challenger trophy for secondary schools. Over 100 years on, the Moascar Cup is now one of the most coveted prizes in New Zealand schoolboy rugby. STAC claimed the trophy from Wellington’s Scots College late last year becoming just the third Christchurch school to do so, along with Christchurch Boys’ High School and St Bede’s College. Today, Timaru get a crack at the silverware and there’s no reason they won’t back themselves to go back to South Canterbury with an another addition to the trophy case, winning four of their six games to start the UC Championship. Rangi Ruru’s new turf • By Gordon Findlater RANGI RURU Girls’ School has welcomed a new artificial hockey turf. Current Black Sticks Gemma Flynn, Jordan Grant and Rachel McCann attended the opening, watching on as current national champions, the first XI Rangi Ruru hockey team, had their first official practice on the new surface. The turf cost just over $1m and is included in stage two of the Project Blue Sky Rangi Ruru campus redevelopment which began in 2012. Sports broadcaster and former New Zealand double international representative in cricket and hockey, Lesley Murdoch ONZM, MBE, was also present, cutting the ribbon on the world class facility which she knows will prove pivotal in the growth of hockey in the region. “It’s massive. It just takes the pressure off those existing turfs to get people on.” Murdoch said. She also believes Canterbury Hockey have done an amazing job to stay competitive following the Christchurch earthquakes, especially at secondary school level. Last September Rangi Ruru claimed the Federation Cup, the highest honour in secondary school girl’s hockey. Christchurch club HSOB/ Burnside will use the hockey turf for training.
