It is not based on the Disney classic but on the Maori story of Pania of the Reef and the exploits of her grand-daughter PJ. It is on from tomorrow at The Court Theatre – see more on pages 10 and 11. NOR’WEST NEWS Tuesday July 12 2016 3 News Permanent site for camera • By Andrew King A TEMPORARY camera championed by city councillor Ali Jones has prompted a permanent one to be installed in St Albans. Two new high-definition security cameras were installed last week on the corner of Manchester and Purchas Sts to deter anti-social behaviour. It comes after Cr Jones suggested a temporary one, in an attempt to solve ongoing issues between sex workers and residents. It was installed in May. The new security camera is being paid for and maintained by the city council. However, Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown (left) said while it gives sex workers a safe spot to stand, it has been put in the wrong place. “It is a double-edged sword. Because of recent events the girls have been looking for a safer spot to stand, and right underneath this camera is perfect for them, which is not good for residents,” he said. Sex worker Renee Duckmanton, who was last seen on Manchester St, was allegedly murdered in May. Mr Keown believes it is a good start but more cameras were needed in the city centre to provide sex workers the safety they deserve while moving them out of residential areas. “The next step is more cameras and more toilets for those who work in this industry,” he said. Police had were consulted by the city council to find the best place to install the camera, they will also have access to the footage. The camera will go live in the next two weeks. NEW: The city council has installed a permanent camera on the corner of Manchester and Purchas Sts to replace a temporary one used to deter anti-social behaviour. In Brief WORK UNDERWAY Repairs to the earthquake damaged wastewater system on Fendalton Rd, near the intersection with Deans and Harper Aves, is under way. Work will begin between property numbers 2-4 on Fendalton Rd. It is installing new wastewater pipes and a pressure wastewater tank on private property, as well as a new wastewater chamber on the road outside of 4A Fendalton Rd. To minimise delays, in the morning there will be two lanes operating for southbound traffic. Northbound traffic will share a single lane. In the afternoon, there will be two lanes operating on Fendalton Rd for northbound traffic, and southbound traffic will share a single lane when passing the work site. FUNDING APPORVED The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will give two grants to students pursuing activities overseas. It approved $300 for 14-year-old Matthew O’Connor to attend the Children’s International Summer Village Camp in the Philippines. It also approved $600 for 21-year-old Anna Woods to put towards studying at the Hopkins-Nanjing Centre in China. The funding was sourced from the board’s 2016/17 discretionary response fund.
