Pupils from Tuahiwi School released eels and planted trees to celebrate the successful realignment of the Kā Pūtahi Creek. Rich with native life, the creek area in Belfast has been the beneficiary of the upcoming creation of the Northern Corridor roading system. The realignment has been carried out by the city council to allow the corridor, which begins construction in October, to pass over the Kā Pūtahi without the need to obstruct the creek with the creation of special culverts. City council head of transport Chris Gregory said big transport developments like this often led to unexpected benefits on the side. “In this case, the Northern Corridor project has given the city council the perfect opportunity to create two hectares of native forest and riparian planting,” he said. “Importantly, the realignment of the stream means that both people and wildlife will be able to move up and down the stream corridor freely, without any barriers created by the motorway NEW DIRECTION: A Belfast creek has benefited from the Northern Corridor roading project. and culverts.” Planning for the realignment began in 2013 and was approved by the city council in August 2015. Construction began in January 2016, with contractors Grounds & Services Ltd able to complete the work ahead of schedule. In securing a viable spring-fed river ecosystem and a sourceto-sea experience through the continuation of the urban reserve network and walkway, the project has been an important step in achieving the Styx Vision 2000-2040. New headquarters for Harcourts Holmwood HARCOURTS Holmwood is preparing for a new era with the demolition of its quake-damaged head office. More than five years on from the earthquakes, the damaged building at 397 Ilam Rd will make way for a new state-of-the art premises. Owners Tony Jenkins and Lynne MacDonald said it was incredibly satisfying to see work underway on the site after several years of evaluation and planning. The new building will be the flagship premises for Harcourts Holmwood, which operates seven offices throughout Christchurch, as well as in Invercargill and Gore. It’s been designed to cater for all aspects of the business’s real estate service, including a new on-site auction room and adjoining cafe. The business will operate out of 142 Sherborne Street, St Albans, during construction.
