Rangi Ruru; Boys’ High
win basketball champs

RANGI RURU Girls’ School
won the Whelan Trophy after
defeating Christchurch Girls’
High School in the secondary
schools’ basketball final.
Christchurch GHS did well to
fight back in the final stages of
the game. However, it was a case
of too little, too late.
Rangi hung on to win 74-62.
They met at Cowles Stadium,
last week, with Rangi dominating
play in the first quarter,
jumping out to a lead of more
than 20 points.
Junior Tall Fern and Rangi
player Esra McGoldrick starred
with 43 points in the win, helping
her team advance to the final
in dominant fashion.
In the Thompson Trophy
final, Christchurch Boys’ High
School took on Burnside High
School.
Burnside had defeated
Christchurch BHS in their past
two meetings. However, the loss
of stars Toby Gillooly and Isaiah
Morris was too much for them
to overcome.
Christchurch BHS took an
early commanding lead and
never looked back. They eventually
won the game in a blow-out
95-62.
Quinn Clinton from Christchurch
BHS was awarded the
Thompson Trophy finals
MVP (most valuable player)
award.
Esra McGoldrick from Rangi
won the Whelan Trophy MVP
award.

Both teams will join a number
of other schools at this week’s
South Island championships in
Christchurch and Ashburton.
They will be competing for
spots in the national tournament
in late September.
Award recognises
professionalism
REDWOOD resident Claire
Jones has been awarded the
title of national trainer of the
year in the recent Contact
Centre Institute of New Zealand
Awards.
Ms Jones from WooHoo NZ
Tax Refunds was honoured at
the annual awards which recognise
the efforts of professionals
in the contact centre industry
across New Zealand.
As WooHoo’s continuous
improvement manager, Ms Jones
was one of three finalists in the
national trainer of the year category
and the only South Island
award finalist.
“Winning the award and
having the School of WooHoo
programme recognised on a
national level is amazing. I feel
so proud of our graduating
newhooers, seeing them grow
and develop, while providing
outstanding service to our customers,”
Ms Jones said.
She joined WooHoo in 2009
and has held a variety of roles
including team leader and training
and development facilitator
before becoming continuous
improvement manager earlier
this year.
Ms Jones helped develop the
school of woohoo, a two-week
training programme for new
staff, or newhooers.
