4 Tuesday November 1 2016 McMaster & Heap Veterinary practice Lymphoma Moya is a beautiful 4yr old Bull Mastiff cross who until earlier this year had been a perfectly healthy young dog. Her owners had noticed that over the past few days she hadn’t been quite her normal bouncy self, had gone off her food and developed a swelling under her throat. They bought her to the clinic and although on examination she seemed quite well she not only had enlarged lymph nodes around her neck but also around the front of her shoulders and at the back of her hind legs. Causes of this could be infection, an allergic reaction, immune mediated disease (where the body kills off its own cells) or cancer. Fine needles aspirates (FNA’s) were taken of Moya’s lymph nodes and sent to a veterinary laboratory. Taking an FNA is a painless procedure and in the majority of animals can be done without sedation. A small needle is inserted into the tissue that you want to sample and a small amount of cells are collected and put onto a slide. Unfortunately, the results that came back from the laboratory confirmed that Moya had a malignant form of cancer known as Lymphoma. This form of cancer is one of the most commonly seen in dogs and often involves multiple organs around the body. To find out where the cancer had spread to Moya had blood tests and thoracic and abdominal x-rays and ultrasound scans performed. The Lymphoma had spread to organs within her chest and abdomen as well as within her lymph nodes – she had high stage B cell-Lymphoma. The results were discussed with her owners who decided that they would like to go ahead with treating her further. With this type of Lymphoma treatment is not surgical, but medical; usually with chemotherapy. We are in contact with a number of specialist Veterinary Oncology clinics in Australia and we contacted them straight away. Within 24 hours they had produced an entire report on Moya, her cancer and different chemotherapy options that they recommended. These treatment options varied from palliative care with steroids through to multidrug chemotherapy options. Moya’s family decided to go ahead with the preferred primary treatment option lasting 15 weeks. Moya started her chemotherapy the following day coming into the clinic every Friday for a blood test to check her red and white blood cell levels and for administration of her drugs intravenously. Throughout the entire duration of treatment, she was very well behaved and tolerated the chemotherapy drugs extremely well, with hardly any noticeable side effects. She was always ready for her treats and walk after her drugs had been given! At the end of the 15 weeks Moya was in complete remission and four weeks later still appears to be. Her owners report that she is better than ever and when she visited last week she was rolling around as normal for her tummy to be tickling whilst we were trying to take her blood test! There is a chance that the Lymphoma will come back but for the moment she is happy, has a new lease of life and is enjoying her time at home with her family. Informing a client that their special friend has a form of cancer, is one of the awful parts of my job. It is such a dreaded disease with often fatal consequences and often at the time of diagnosis, the disease has well advanced. Due to many cancers having malignant potential, speed of diagnosis and treatment is necessary to have any chance of remission. Many hard decisions have to be made and that is when you can rely on us to do our job. That’s often the hardest part as the administration of chemotherapy usually goes really smoothly. Pets rarely have side effects, the drugs are painless if given properly, your pet is treated as an outpatient and we often see improvement quickly, if we are going to be successful. I have first hand experience in the process as my beautiful dog Lola developed kidney cancer last year and received four rounds of chemo. IN THE last article we looked at the issues confronting Papanui citizens in 1989 through the lens offered by the Papanui Herald. Today we travel back to April 17, 1973; at this stage the local community newspaper was called the Herald. It was owned, managed and edited by Des King who operated the weekly tabloid from premises at 22 Main North Rd. The Papanui library had decided to combat falling membership by allocating $50 to buy paperbacks as they appealed to young people and were also cheap in comparison to hardbacked volumes. Papanui High School was wrestling with the problem of a rapidly rising roll; the Parent Teachers’ Association wanted this stabilised in the interests of maintaining a community atmosphere although the principal, Mr E Fancy, could foresee that the day would come when 1250 students would attend the school. THE ‘OINK’ BEATER: This model was promoted as the car of the future in comparison to the then current generation cars which were portrayed as gas guzzlers and money stealers. Hutchinson Motors, on the corner of Papanui Rd and Blair Ave, was advertising a new Ford Escort. This model was promoted as the car of the future in comparison to the then current generation of ‘oinks’ which were portrayed as gas guzzlers and ‘money stealers’. The price for a new NOR’WEST NEWS Escort was just over $3000, which may seem cheap for a new car but when translated to 2016 dollars would have cost $36,000 for a very basic model. Meanwhile, the Papanui Service Station was promoting its ‘Rub a Dub’ car wash which it advertised as the only fully automatic service available in Christchurch. This luxury cost $1.50 ($18 in 2016 value). Motorists who purchased their petrol at this outlet were also eligible to win ‘instant’ prizes. Suckling Brothers were offering positions as footwear machinists in their new premises ‘situated one minute’s walk from Northlands.’ The advertisement posed the question to locals ‘why go to town when you can work in Papanui?’ Four decades later there are few openings in local manufacturing as cheaper imports now dominate the market for consumer goods. Easter was imminent and most of Papanui’s oldest churches offered plenty of options for formal commemoration. A recent trailer raffle run by the club in conjunction with Mitre 10 MEGA, and supported by Allprint, raised $25,361 after selling 8000 tickets. All proceeds will be shared between the Papanui Rotary Children in Need Trust and the Christchurch Charity Hospital. Trustee Tony Tizzard is delighted the trust’s share of the proceeds will support families with an identified need, such as enabling children to have school uniforms and attend camps. The proceeds will also assist the Canterbury Charity Hospital with the establishment of their two new oral surgery units. Rotary Papanui proposed the idea to Mitre 10 MEGA WINNER: The Rotary Club of Papanui raised more than $25,000 for children and a charity hospital by holding a raffle. Marie Gaskell won first prize, a trailer full of goods. Mitre 10 MEGA manager Josh Tasker (centre) and president of Papanui Rotary John Allen presented her with the prize. Papanui owner Andrew Smith who said it was a great way of contributing to the community. The club bought the trailer and Mr Smith filled it with goods which were raffled off as the main prize. Bishopdale resident Marie Gaskill won the trailer valued at $7520, Casebrook resident Jo Fitchett was second and won a barbecue, and Rangiora resident Gail Lyes was third receiving a Mitre 10 voucher valued at $500. A spokesperson for the club said this was not ‘just another raffle’. “This was an active and collaborative partnership between a charitable organisation and a local business to make a valuable difference to our community.” Rotary Papanui wants to thank Mitre 10 MEGA, Allprint, Northlands and the many people behind the scenes who worked so willingly, and it looks forward to future opportunities to join forces for the community. Mr Doocey said the new office would make him more accessible to residents living in northern Christchurch. “I have already started meeting constituents at my new office and the feedback I am receiving on how much easier it is for people living south of the Waimak River to meet with me has confirmed this was a good way to be accessible,” he said.
