MXOLISI MBUTHUMA: I spent a lot of money on groceries and toys for children. I also took my family to the beach. LAURIKA ALEXANDER: It was very nice even though I was working. It’s always nice to be on service to our holidaymakers and to serve them. NEIL WELSH: It was good. I spent it at home with my wife and children. We had a party just to make it extraordinary. MYSTERIOUS DEATHS: How this cow and calf died is still under investigation, but township cattle-owners have moved their animals to a large open area close to the Marjorie Parrish Hospital above Nemato to prevent them from straying through the township or over the R67 which has seen many accidents directly attributable to stray cattle Cattle die after owners move some of them ZUSAKHE JELU: I started at church and it was good. ROB KNOWLES A CCORDING to the Eastern Border Farmers Association the problem of stray cattle has persisted for the last 100 years, but a possible solution was found recently by Ndlambe Municipality when township cattle owners were invited to move their cattle to a large plot of land close to the Marjorie Parrish TB Hospital. However, the cattle owners are concerned and want to speak with mayor Phindile Faxi regarding a number of cattle that have been found dead in the new grazing area. The matter was brought to Talk of the Town’s attention by recently appointed PR councillor for the DA, Thunyelwa Mbekela, who was concerned that cattle might not be receiving the necessary care since the move. DA caucus leader and ward councillor Ray Schenk was Councillor establishing facts after herds relocated to plot contacted for comment and said he was waiting to discuss the issue with the mayor before making any formal statements. He also said he had asked Mbekela to await discussion before taking the matter further. “The cattle were not impounded,” he said. “The owners were offered to resettle their animals on a large piece of municipal-owned land [maybe a few hundred hectares] to alleviate problems on the roads and in the township.” The fact that the municipality has already earmarked a piece of land opposite the Port Alfred High School with view to temporarily impound stray cattle there until the municipal truck can take them to the pound in Alexandria has had residents worried, particularly in light of them being assured earlier that such a thing would not happen. It was confirmed that at least two cows and a calf have died after the move to the new grazing area near Marjorie Parrish Hospital, but it is unclear if these cattle died because of the move. “It is true that cattle have died, but we believe a cow was moved to the new location because it was already sick. “We do not want to jump to conclusions until we know all the facts. We don’t know if the animals died of natural causes, lack of care or whether they were already sick. If there is a problem we will make a formal complaint, but it is early days and we still need to clarify what has actually happened before taking any action,” said Schenk.
