Speaker motivates others
Desmond Coetzee
AKING William’s Town
public speaker is trying
to encourage pupils of
local schools to reach for
the stars.
Ngcwalisa Maswana was
born in Mdantsane and later
relocated to King William’s
Town. Her story, she says, is not
complex and similar to that of
many others.
“We are all faced with
challenges and we all have a
purpose. We have the ability to
have a significant impact on
others in our lifetime.”
She started her mission as a
life coach by visiting schools in
King William’s Town and
surrounding areas earlier this
year, speaking on being
positive and inspiring young
people to focus on their
at titude.
“I also visit primary schools
to volunteer to conduct the
morning prayer at the assembly
so that I can reach those
minds.”
Maswana said, “We can go
on every day thinking that life
is unfair but no one promised
that life would be fair. The only
way we can make life fair is by
giving it every ounce of
e n e r g y. ”
God’s words and stories of
courage were her inspiration.
“One my many messages is:
decide on whether you want
something or not. If you don’t
want it, let it go. If you do then
go for it. You alone are in
charge of your life and you
must feel good about the
decisions you make.”
UPLIFTING TALK: Ngcwalisa Maswana is motivating others
Residents angry
over dumping
Desmond Coetzee
RESIDENTS from Buffalo
City Metro’s (BCM) Ward
44 in Breidbach in King
William’s Town are
concerned about the poor
state of the roads,
unkempt grass and
rampant illegal dumping
in the area.
The GO&Express has
been inundated with
complaints which range
from stray animals
destroying gardens, the
unavailability of the ANC
ward councillor and ward
committee members to
oversee complaints and an
alleged lack of ward
meetings.
Ruth Swartz, who has
had to deal with unsightly
rubbish piled up opposite
her Breidbach home, said
the situation was
d i s g u st i n g .
“People are dumping all
sorts of rubbish,
sometimes sanitary towels
or dead animals and BCM
are doing absolutely
n ot h i n g . ”
Another resident, who
wanted to remain
anonymous, said she had
given up reporting to the
authorities the issue of
huge thorn trees and tall
grass that are a risk to
m ot o r i st s .
“The view of motorists is
obstructed by the
overgrown weeds” she
said.She said it was an
accident waiting to
happen.
Theda Genade of Golf
Club in Sweetwaters said
the lack of a storm water
drainage system was
causing havoc in their
area.
“We live at the bottom
of a steep hill and when it
rains the water flows
directly into our yards,
destroying our gardens
and homes.”
Annie Barnes, who lives
nearby, said rats and
snakes were unwelcome
visitors due to the
overgrown area and illegal
dumping.
South African National
Civic Organisation Ward
44 branch secretary
Stacey Gosling said they
had brought some of the
concerns to the attention
of BCM and were awaiting
response.
Councillor Sixolisiwe
Nstasela said: “I am aware
of the situation and we will
start off with a cleaning up
campaign for the
Breidbach area on Friday.

EL Shipyard oversees
repairs on SA Agulhas
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE South African Maritime
Safety Authority's (Samsa)
dedicated training vessel, the
SA Agulhas, is back in the port
of East London 's Princess
Elizabeth dry-dock.
The 40-year old vessel, which
recently returned from a
three-month trip to Antarctica,
is back in East London for her
lay-up maintenance plan after
her previous visit in 2013, and
was welcomed by a refurbished
dry-dock with improved
fa c i l i t i e s .
The four to six-week contract
was awarded to local ship repair
company, East London Shipyard.
Work includes repairs and
maintenance on the bow and
stern thrusters, tail shaft,
steering gear, compressors,
cranes, deck machinery and
hull. “More than 80 direct jobs
have been created during the
project including employment
for marine engineers,
electricians, riggers, welders,
fitters, painters and supervisory
st a f f, ” Transnet National Ports
Authorit y’s (TPNA) Ship Repair
Manager for the Port of East
London, Leigh Carls said.
The dry-dock, which is
currently undergoing the
advanced stage of its
refurbishment project, now
boasts new switchgear and
crane rails. “Work commenced
in 2015 with a phased approach
being followed to enhance all
critical components and allow
for the dock to be functional
throughout the upgrading
process. R21-million has been
invested to date and 70% of the
work has been completed thus
fa r, ” Carls said. As part of
T N PA ’s contribution nationally
towards government’s
Operation Phakisa initiative, the
dry-dock refurbishment is in
support of ship repair and
marine manufacturing.
Operation Phakisa aims to
unlock the economic potential
of the country’s oceans by
accelerating investments into
ship repair facilities and marine
engineering capability.
The SA Agulhas is the fifth
commercial vessel to make use
of the dry-dock over the past six
months. She was one of the star
attractions at last year’s East
London Port Festival, as well as
the People’s Port Festival in Port
Elizabeth earlier this year.
Twenty cadets ,enrolled in the
national cadet programme
managed by the South African
International Maritime Institute
(SAIMI), obtained experience on
the vesssel's recent Antarctic
voyage, counting towards their
sea time to obtain their STCW
certificates of competency.
East London Port Manager,
Sharon Sijako, said attracting
more ship repair business to the
port was an essential aspect of
the new aggressive strategy to
expand the port for the benefit
of the region.
Dancer needs help with
chance to perform in US
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE CyfaDance community
development project,
which was started in 2008
by local dancer and model
Benjamin Rexana, has
been helping young
children in and around
East London through
dance.
Catering to more than
25 children, the project is
centred around Mdantsane
and Parkside, where
Rexana teaches dance
classes d a i l y. .
“I wanted to make a
difference in my
community and help the
youth. I teach them dance
to keep them off the
streets and keep them
from going into a life of
drugs and crime,” Rexana
said.
The group recently
competed in the PnA
Ultimate Performer, and
wowed audience members
and judges with their
impressive hip hop
routines and break
dancing stunts.
While Rexana is the
main instructor, he
welcomes and invites
other dance teachers to
help him teach the
children various styles and
skills.
“My main challenge is
equipment. I do not have
everything I need for
dance classes and
sometimes we do not even
have a hall to practise in.”
“CyfaDance is looking
for sponsors or anyone
who is willing to assist us.”
Rexana was also
recently invited to perform
at the ARTS International
Showcase in the US in
J u l y.
The showcase offers
talented performers from
all over the world an
opportunity to perform in
front of an international
panel of agents, casting
directors, record labels,
managers and producers
in the hope of being
recognised and signed.
Rexana is tasked with
having to get himself to
America and needs
financial support to cover
his visa, travel,
accommodation and meal
costs for the trip.
“It would mean the
world to me to be able to
attend this showcase. I
want to show my dancers
that you can reach your
dreams..
“It would be a honour to
represent South Africa and
I would love to learn as
much as possible in
America so I can help my
dancers improve their
skills.”
FAMILY TIME: Visitors to the East London Zoo enjoyed an open day on Saturday
A great day at the EL Zoo
SIVENATHI GOSA
EAST London residents had the
opportunity to explore the city’s zoo
during its annual open day on
S at u r d ay.
Friends of East London Zoo
(Felzoo) manager Angeline Wheeler
said the event aimed to bring
families together with the
opportunity to enjoy the facilities at
the zoo without charge.
“Buffalo City Municipality [BCM]
gave permission to host the event
for the public. We want the public to
be aware about the condition of the
animals,” she said.
The GO! reported (“Petition to
close down city's zoo”, January 25)
that a petition had been circulated to
close down the zoo due to the
neglected state of the facility.
A concerned local took to social
media and posted pictures of the
animals that looked frail and sickly.
Wheeler said since the matter had
been brought to the attention of the
public, things had changed.
“Our animals are old, but they are
in a healthy condition. We do have
farmers who give carcasses for the
meat-eating animals. Our top priority
is their health, so we make sure we
give fresh food and a veterinarian
Picture: SIVENATHI GOSA
also visits the zoo,” Wheeler said.
Security had also improved with
police officers patrolling the
premises.
Belgravia resident Luyanda Mbebe
took his three children to enjoy the
zo o .
“I decided to take the children out
on this wonderful day as I saw it
fitting for them to spend their day
here before the schools reopen on
Tu e s d ay, ” Mbebe said.
Rachel Samson,12, spent her day
at the zoo with her family.
“I love being here at the zoo
because I love playing on the swings
and I also like seeing the animals.”

Rescuers in frantic bid to
save young Cape Parrot
Dr Kate Carstens
THE Cape Parrot Project, which
is based in Hogsback and
extends to nearby King
William’s Town, is involved in
a battle to save the life of a
young Cape Parrot.
The bird accidentally fell
from its nest, 25m above
ground in Hogsback in
January, when trying to beg
from one of its parents flying
p a st .
Research manager Cassie
Carstens was watching the
nest and saw the incident,
managing to save the chick
which had miraculously
survived the fall.
A veterinarian gave the bird
a clear bill of health and it was
taken to the Carstens’ home.
The bird did not have any
flight feathers, only a full
covering of white fluffy down
feathers and a good covering
of feathers on its head.
The Carstens tried to think
of ways to return the bird to its
nest but then started
wondering why, if the other
chicks from the nest had
fledged, this chick had not.
They realised it was suffering
from Psittacine Beak and
Feather Disease which affects
the immune systems in
DESMOND COETZEE
A KING William’s Town
contractor became a hero
after he stepped in when
local authorities had failed
to prepare the soccer field
for a scheduled Safa Buffalo
City SAB league game in
Breidbach at the weekend.
The field was in a poor
state with tall grass and no
markings prior to the match
between local club Rising
Stars and Mdantsane’s
Willows, which currently
occupy fourth and third
place on the log respectively.
According to Safa rules
and regulations, the
responsibility lies with the
home team to ensure that
Chick fell 25m from nest in Hogsback
parrots, budgies and other
psittacines and causes feather
loss.
The Cape Parrot species is
down to only 1700 individuals
and only found in South Africa.
“Everything is going against
them. Forests are shrinking
and most of their nest trees
were cut down decades ago
for furniture and railway
sleepers.
“For these parrots to be able
to get enough food, they
sometimes have to travel far in
rain and strong winds, fighting
to get to their feeding ground,
finding exotic food sources not
good for them, and flying back
by nightfall.
“When they are away
feeding, some of them get
caught for the illegal pet trade,
some of them are so sick they
cannot fly home, “ Kate said.
As the vet had indicated
that it was unlikely that the
young parrot would ever be
able to fly and with no cure for
the disease, they are trying to
strengthen his immune
s y st e m .
They are also calling on
King residents to look out for
the Cape Parrot in the area
the field is in a playable
condition.
Gavin “Maghan” Rose of
Rose Transport and
Construction said he was
still at work when he was
approached by Stars
executive member and
goalkeeper Dean “Lopez”
Jasson to assist them by
cutting the grass for their
game.
“Lopez explained their
predicament and asked for
assistance, so I acted and
completed the job in less
than an hour. I also help out
at the local primary school
free of charge. I feel that it is
my way to plough back into
the community although I
strongly condemn the
Projects and Events. I am
also involved in a new
supplement and nutrition
shop, Olympus Cafe, at the
Mdantsane Motion Fitness
Gym.
Q: What inspires you?
A: I have a passion for
people. I always seek
oppor tunities not just for
BULELANI NTSANGANI
my benefit, but for the
benefit of people at large. I
am passionate about the
youth, women development
and empowerment. Every
time I see a person thriving
or growing who I’ve
touched or motivated, it
fuels me to work harder.
Q: Which people alive or
dead would you love to
have dinner with?
A: Mark Zuckerberg – I
would love to find out how
he overcame the challenges
of starting something which
had previously not been
heard of, turning it into one
of the biggest enterprises in
the world. I would also like
to hear his views on the
changing front of business,
and maybe he can assist
me to adapt and to try be
ahead of the changes.
Also, Nelson Mandela,
because I would love to
hear what kept him going
and how, through all the
adversity, he managed to
become one of the world’s
biggest icons. I would also
love to hear the stories of
his time on this Earth.
Lastly, it would definitely
be Richard Branson. He is
an inspiration and an
amazing entrepreneur.
His advice would assist
me in developing my
business and also business
in the Eastern Cape.
Q: What makes you proud
of your city?
A: Anyone who knows me
knows I am passionate
about Buffalo City.
I’m even a part of the
leadership of the Kwanele
People Movement Agenda
Seven, a movement that is
all for the advancement of
societal service delivery
needs, growth and
development within the
metro. Buffalo City is a
beautiful city and it is time
Calvary church celebrates
for youth to take pride in,
and to participate in the
growth and development of
this city. I would not want to
be anywhere else. We have
everything here.
Q: What makes you
proudly South African?
A: One of the most
beautiful things about
South Africa is the fact that
South Africa is its people
and the people are South
Africa. We are diverse in
culture, religion and many
other aspects, but we have
managed to keep the
country growing. We have
our challenges as a country,
but this can only truly be
solved through unity.
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE Easter weekend saw some
wonderful celebrations at Calvary
Christian Church with three unique
worship services.
Attracting more than 1100 people,
Calvar y’s Good Friday service hosted
the live Easter production titled Six
Hours That Changed the World,
which shared the message of Jesus’
crucifixion.
Resurrection Sunday was
celebrated with a special water
baptism service in which 26 people
were baptised.
Following the Sunday morning
service, Calvary Kids enjoyed a huge
Easter egg hunt with more than
2500 chocolate eggs to be found.
its three worship services over the Easter weekend Picture: SUPPLIED
The Easter weekend for Calvary
ended off with a screening of the
feature film, The Case for Christ,
based on the New York Times
best-seller by Lee Stroebel.
“For followers of Jesus, Easter is
the most significant weekend in the
Christian calendar,” Calvary lead
pastor, Dustan Bell said.
“Christianity rises and falls upon
the fact of Jesus’ death and
resurrection; it’s the hinge of history.
“At Calvary, our passion is to
communicate the timeless message
of Jesus, with a timely touch, so that
it’s understood and appreciated by
younger generations,” Bell said.
Throughout the Easter weekend,
Calvary hosted more than 275 0
people, experiencing its l a r g e st
c o n g r e g at i o n .
“Though many people would say
the church is becoming increasingly
irrelevant in modern society, this
weekend showed us the message of
Jesus is as relevant as ever.”

Hope Schools
toasts success
HOPE Schools in East London
recently invited individuals and
representatives of
organisations and companies
to celebrate the phenomenal
growth that has taken place at
their school founded by First
City Baptist Church under the
auspices of Sophumelela
Cent re.
In under four years, the
school has grown to include 10
brand new classrooms, an
administrative block and an
ablution block, together with a
house presently occupied by an
estate manager.
All of this has been made
possible through the generous
support of companies such as
Johnson & Johnson – who
donated the land, Makana
Bricks, Independent Group,
Kempston, Barloworld,
Floorworx, Coastal Hire,
Setplan and many others.
In thanking those who
attended the function, Hope
Schools Trust Board chairman
Dr Alan Staples said, “Hope
Schools is giving the 246
HIV/Aids-infected and -affected
children presently attending
the school from the townships
around East London a fairer
chance in life”.
“God had put it into the
hearts of men and women in
East London and around the
world to help Hope Schools to
grow to where it is today,” he
added.
The principal agent and
school architect, Bruce Webber,
said: “We have been building a
school that will be here for
generations to come.”
He thanked everyone “who
had made this magnificent
vision a reality”.
Pageant a crowning
glory for Mdantsane
SIVENATHI GOSA
HIGH school pupils of
Mdantsane gathered at the
Indoor Sports Centre recently for
the Mr and Miss Mdantsane
2018 beauty pageant.
Event manager S i ya s a n g a
Z wa k a l a said the pageant started
in 2009, the year in which he
won the title. He took over
hosting the event in 2011.
“We had 70 contestants from
various schools with about 1500
people supporting the pageant.
“A parent also sent me a
message on Facebook, thanking
me for the opportunity I had
given her son and the other
young people of Mdantsane. This
is one of the reasons why I do
what I do – to develop the
youth,” Zwakala said.
Local artists also showed off
their talents in dance, music,
poetry and fashion.
Sakhisizwe Senior High School
pupil Sinesipho Melani, 17, was
crowned Miss Mdantsane High
School 2018 and Mzomhle High
School pupil Milisa Maliwa, 17, as
Mr Mdantsane High School 2018.
“I am overwhelmed at winning,
but I did make sure I impressed
the judges,” Sinesipho said.
Sinesipho said she believed
her mother and her aunt.
“I would make time to practise
my grammar and how I walk.”
The winners received prizes
valued at about R3000.
Zwakala thanked the
Mdantsane community for
supporting the event.
IT’S A CELEBRATION: The East London Science College held their annual Cultural Day celebration
recently at the Calvary Christian Church in Quigney. The pupils showed off their traditional outfits
and shared their talents with, back from left, Thabang Mbopha, Melikhaya Phakamile (Mr
GOING GREEN: The Hudson Park High School environmental group, Talon, has had an amazing start
to the year, running cleanups, a recycling drive and planting vegetables in the school’s vegetable
garden. Well done to the Talon group on making an impact at Hudson Park and, to a larger extent,
the planet. Talon group member Mvanakazi Mxhobo works in the garden Picture: SUPPLIED
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE Buckaroo Sterilisation Drive, started by
award-winning fine art photographer and
philanthropist Marlene Neumann, has been
changing the lives of many furry friends over the
past two years.
It is now in need of donations from the public.
Neumann and her team recently started the
Friends of the Buckaroo, to which the public can
donate a monthly fee to ensure the continued
success of the project.
The project is aimed at ensuring as many
dogs as possible in and around township areas
are sterilised in an effort to alleviate the strain
that local animal shelters and sanctuaries are
u n d e r.
“Animal shelters are already buckling under
the pressure to assist animals in need and I
believe if we can slow the birth rate down, the
local shelters will feel the relief in years to
come, ” Neumann said.
“We are, however, reaching a stage where we
cannot do this alone anymore. There are many
animal lovers out there and I am appealing to
you to help me help the dogs in informal
settlements and townships.”
Partnering with the East London SPCA and
local vets, more than 450 dogs have been
sterilised in townships and informal settlements
in and around East London through the project.
“It takes a lot of determination, courage and
commitment to do this work, but the project has
been extremely effective,” Neumann said .
The Buckaroo team are urging the public to
become a Friend of Buckaroo by donating as
little as R20 every month.
All the funds raised and donated will go
towards the costs of sterilisation, provision of
food and medication such as deworming and
TVT treatment.
For more information on how to become a
Friend of Buckaroo and support the project,
please contact Neumann on 083-321-3391 or at
Sacrifice of the sporting widow
DIDN’T you just love that
little promo on SuperSport
a few weeks ago which
showed a fellow with an
angelic look on his face
wishing his wife a happy
birthday and handing her
the television remote
control device in a gesture
of supreme sacrifice?
My wife, bless her, who
over the years has made
enough “sarmies” fo r
Selborne and Queen’s
sporting teams to feed an
army, still doesn’t know a
hockey ball from the
Darktown Strutters’ Ball
and frankly I suspect,
couldn’t give a rat’s ***!
So, like television
sporting widows
everywhere, she clutched
her forehead in dark
despair when I gleefully
informed her that all the
upcoming IPC cricket
matches in India and all
the Super 16 rugby
matches would be
broadcast live and not
only that, we are also to
be treated to saturation
coverage of the
Commonwealth Games
and Formula One motor
racing on every second
Sunday afternoon. And,
REFLECTIONS
having already survived
four cricket test matches
against Australia and
countless English Premier
League football matches,
she could now, for good
measure, also look
forward to 64 matches in
the Fifa World Cup
football competition.
Oh, what bliss – long
autumn and winter days
of lovely sport on the box!
Generally speaking, we
males consider ourselves
reasonably controlled
sports devotees but alas,
there are extremists out
there who turn into
monsters in front of the
weekend television
screen.
During a rugby test
match, for example, a
normally docile and
manageable husband
succumbs to a sort of
sporting insanity.
A charming and
... with Charles Beningfield
affectionate Jekyll
becomes a dangerous Mr
Hyde from whom his
offspring retreat in terror
to the far corners of the
house.
As the Springboks strive
to cross their opponents’
goal-line in yet another
futile attempt, the
television set becomes a
god before which the most
alarming contortions and
rites are performed.
Were a stranger to
whom rugby was an
unknown quantity to see
the head of the house
wailing and writhing,
clapping and jumping and
swearing and screaming
in front of the little screen,
he would feel duty bound
to summon the men in
white jackets.
And that’s not all.
When the rugger
buggers have put away
their blood-stained kit and
wives and girlfriends can
heave a gigantic sigh of
relief and enjoy a
well-earned break from
constant instruction on
the importance of finding
touch, the merits of the
substitution system and
the gross ineptitude of
Northern Hemisphere
referees, they can brace
themselves to have runs,
wickets, boundaries, the
merits of the review
system and the gross
ineptitude of Nor thern
Hemisphere umpires
thrust down their throats.
As I say, the wives of we
sports freaks can always
retire to the sanctity of the
bedroom to weave wool or
consult their friendly
neighbourhood lawyer on
the best kind of divorce
deal they can get.
Or they could subscribe
to the “join ‘em if you
can’t beat ‘em” brigade!
GORGEOUS KIDS: Last year’s
PNA Stationers owners,
Darryl and Gussie
Eberhardt donated an extra
R8 000 to the Jo Jackson
Dance Company dancers
before they flew out to
compete in the Battle of
the Giants competition, last
week.
The dance group were
the recent overall PNA
Ultimate performer
runner-up, wowing the
judges with an energetic
hip hop routine and
winning a R2000 cash
prize. The trip cost each
dancer R10000, with the
extra funds donated from
PnA helping the group in
making the trip possible.
“I can not thank PnA
enough,” said teacher, Jo
Jackson.
Battle of the Giants is the
first of three qualifying
rounds to the World
Championships which will
be taking place in Poland
later this year. In order to
qualify for the World
Championships the group
will need to come in one of
the top three positions
during each round.
“I totally believe in them
and believe that we going
to make East London
proud. We are really
positive, but every year we
are blown away with the
level of talent and quality
of dancing in each
category at this
competition,” said
Jackson.
Gussie Eberhardt wished
the team good luck as they
got ready to board their
flight to Johannesburg.
“I hope they do well.
They are really talented
dancers and deserve this
oppor tunit y,” Eberhardt
said.

Swallows take flight
SIVENATHI GOSA
THE Rugby Super League
kicked off in East London on
Saturday with Swallows Rugby
Football hosting the Old
Selbornians Rugby Football
Club in Mdantsane.
Swallows defeated the
visitors 36-28 in an exciting
m at c h .
Swallows coach Yongama
Mkaza said he was not happy
with the team’s performance.
“Although we won the game,
we could have done better.”
The team had not adhered to
its game plan with players
playing as individuals and not
as a team.
“Moving forward, we will
have to change the mentality
of playing a one-man's game.
We missed a lot of
opportunities but it was our
first game of the league.”
Old Selbornians coach
Alistair Alexander said he
thought the team's
performance was not bad
considering that it was the first
game of the season and that
they had played against a team
that had won the Eastern Cape
Super 12 rugby tournament.
“I think we lacked match
fitness, but my boys did well
being down at half time by
almost 20 points. We must st i c k
to our game plan, structures
and keep possession.”
Next week, Swallows will
travel to Tsholomnqa to play
against the Blacks RFC, and
the Old Boys will face Fort
Hare University.
Run raises R10000 for Breath of Life
THE RB Africa Wild Coast
Challenge, a three-day stage run
held every February over 110kms
from Mazeppa Bay to Nahoon, has
handed over funds raised to local
non-profit organisation, Breath of
L i fe .
The East London NPO, which is
a place of safety for abandoned
babies, received R10000 from the
event.
Andrew Rielly, who completed
his fourth RB Africa Wild Coast
Challenge this year, and his wife,
Michelle, are the house parents at
the home. RB Africa also collected
clothes and essential items that
were donated directly to Breath of
Life. Steers came on board and
donated free burgers to runners
and supporters at the finishing
line of the run in return for a
donation in the collection bin.
The RB Africa Wild Coast
Challenge is the ultimate bucket
list event for trail enthusiasts.
Next year brings an exciting new
change as for the first time it will
start at The Haven, Cwebe and end
at Crawfords Cabins, Chintsa. The
120kms will be run over three
days. Contact Dominique Schafer
Join in SPCA
golf day fun
SIVENATHI GOSA
THE East London and King
William’s Town SPCAs will join
forces in hosting the second
annual joint golf day on May 26
at the West Bank Golf Club.
Organiser Margaret Pautz said
the golf day was one of the
bigger fundraising events hosted
by the animal welfare body with
proceeds to be used at both
SPCAs.
“The SPCA is always in
constant need of funding and
donations from the public for its
very existence to provide a host
of welfare and other services to
the Buffalo City Municipality
area as we operate without any
government support or
a s s i st a n c e . ”
Hopes are high for 30 teams
to take part with sponsors
needed for the tees and greens.
“We are appealing to
businesses in both East London
and King William’s Town to book
a tee or green. They can put up
company flags, signage, samples
or whatever they need to
advertise their businesses and to
make it a fun day for the golfers.”
Sponsorship of tees and
greens is R750 and a clubhouse
advertisement is R500. The
teams may be entered in a
four-ball alliance with the cost at
R1 000 per team.
“Some good prizes have been
donated for the teams. Each
team will also be given a platter
of snacks for their team once
they are back at the clubhouse.
Prize-giving will follow after the
last team is in.”
THE 2018 City Surf Series makes
its way to Buffalo City this
weekend and promises to be an
action-packed weekend, bringing
some of South Africa’s top
surfers to local shores.
Starting tomorrow at Nahoon
Reef, the Mitchum Buffalo City
Surf Pro is the third stop in the
City Surf Series, which will
culminate in June at the
Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing
in Nelson Mandela Bay where a
series champion will be crowned.
The series was launched last
year and aims to provide South
African surfers with the
opportunity to compete in
Qualifying Series (QS) events on
a regular basis without the
expense of travelling overseas.
During the course of the City
Surf Series, South Africa’s best
surfers will battle it out for
valuable qualifying points as they
build towards making the
championship tour.
Men, women and youth surfing
competitions will take place at
each event, with the VW Nelson
Mandela Bay Surf Pro and Royal
St Andrews Port Alfred Classic
already having some talented
surfers dominate in the waves
including ratings leader and VW
NMB Surf Pro champion Dillon
Hendricks and RSAH Port Alfred
champion, Joshafina Ane from
Argentina.
This year has also seen the
inclusion of Longboard and Stand
Up Paddle Surfing (SUP)
competitions, creating a truly
spectacular one-of-a-kind surfing
fe st i va l .
The Mitchum Buffalo City Surf
Pro will have QS1000 men and
women, junior QS men and
women, as well as SSA
longboard invitational men and
women events taking place over
the course of the weekend
“Nahoon Reef is a right-hand
point break.
“It has a wide swell window
that picks up a lot of swell and
packs a lot of power. Wave
selection will be key in scoring
high,” public relations specialist
for the event, Jacqueline Herbst
said.
Strong contenders for this
w e e ke n d ’s surf in both men’s and
women’s events include
defending champions Koby
Olberholzer and Sophie Bell.
Surfers who have proven to be
specialists in right-hand point
breaks are Dale Staples, Matt
McGilliray, Dylan Lightfoot, Joshe
Faulkner, Steven Sawyer and
Slade Prestwich.
The local veterans to look out
for are Greg Emslie, Wayne Monk
and Devyn Matthys, each of
whom have won events at
Nahoon Reef in the past.
VW NMB Surf Pro champion
and ratings leader Kai Woolf, who
grew up in Jeffreys Bay, as well
as local surfer Zoe Steyn are also
keen contenders to look out for
in the women’s QS1000 event.
The City Surf Series also
consists of a men’s QS 1500 and
a women’s QS 3000 event,
making it the biggest women’s
Qualifying Series in Africa,
hoping to attract some of the
world’s best ahead of the debut
of the women’s Championship
Tour event in Jeffreys Bay in July.
