Audi lands
River bed
LUKE CHARTER
PORT Alfred road safety markings and
security during this year’s New Year’s Day
celebrations have been thrown into the
spotlight after a car travelling down Van der Riet
Street in Port Alfred landed in the Kowie River.
Bystanders reported that there were three
adults and one infant in the car.
The dark Audi sedan had apparently been
going the wrong way en route to Grahamstown.
All occupants escaped without major injuries
but were taken to the local hospital to be
c h e c ke d .
It is not known if alcohol was involved.
Police and emergency personnel were quick to
reach the scene.
Fortunately, the tide was low so the car landed
on the dry stone river bed, averting tragedy.
Tow truck operators on the scene, however,
said that they would be unable to recover the
car in the dark and had to wait until morning, so
the car likely sustained additional damage as
the tide rolled in. It took hours for the towing
company to retrieve the vehicle the following
morning.
Van der Riet Street ends in gravel that runs all
the way to the stone river bank, with no clear
signage indicating the danger ahead or that the
road has ended.
New Year’s Day revelry spread across much of
town with partygoers encamped along the
beaches, at the krantz, around the Duck Pond
and at the park area adjacent the public library,
and revellers everywhere in between.
How did you spend your New Year’s Day?
NEIL WELSH: It was good. I
spent it at home with my wife
and children. We had a party
just to make it extraordinary.
MYSTERIOUS DEATHS: How this cow and calf died is still under investigation, but township
cattle-owners have moved their animals to a large open area close to the Marjorie Parrish Hospital
above Nemato to prevent them from straying through the township or over the R67 which has seen
many accidents directly attributable to stray cattle
of stray cattle has
persisted for the last 100 years,
cattle owners were invited to
that have been found dead in
the new grazing area.
The matter was brought to
Talk of the Town’s attention by
recently appointed PR councillor
for the DA, Thunyelwa Mbekela,
who was concerned that cattle
might not be receiving the
necessary care since the move.
DA caucus leader and ward
councillor Ray Schenk was
Councillor establishing facts
after herds relocated to plot
contacted for comment and said
he was waiting to discuss the
issue with the mayor before
making any formal statements.
He also said he had asked
Mbekela to await discussion
before taking the matter further.
“The cattle were not
impounded,” he said. “The
owners were offered to resettle
their animals on a large piece of
municipal-owned land [maybe a
few hundred hectares] to
alleviate problems on the roads
and in the township.”
The fact that the municipality
has already earmarked a piece
of land opposite the Port Alfred
High School with view to
temporarily impound stray cattle
there until the municipal truck
can take them to the pound in
Alexandria has had residents
worried, particularly in light of
them being assured earlier that
such a thing would not happen.
It was confirmed that at least
two cows and a calf have died
after the move to the new
grazing area near Marjorie
Parrish Hospital, but it is
unclear if these cattle died
because of the move.
“It is true that cattle have
died, but we believe a cow was
moved to the new location
because it was already sick.
“We do not want to jump to
conclusions until we know all
the facts. We don’t know if the
animals died of natural causes,
lack of care or whether they
were already sick. If there is a
problem we will make a formal
complaint, but it is early days
and we still need to clarify what
has actually happened before
taking any action,” said Schenk.

OPINION
Making a
resolution
you have
to keep
NEW year always brings a sense of
Achange, even though it may be more
about the construct of the calendar than
any shift in our lives.
As humans we are as dependent on the
cycles of the seasons as all of nature is,
and it is for our mental well-being too that
there is a beginning and end to things, and
life does not continue in an endless
routine. After all, our bodies will not.
It is good to have a break too, however
brief it may be, and we are thankful for the
holidays that mark the closure of one year
and the start of the next.
People make a lot of jokes about New
Ye a r ’s resolutions and our failure to keep
them, which is human nature. But
psychologically, it probably is a good time
to decide to change old and destructive
habits with a view to replacing them with
something positive.
The most common resolutions of all are
to lose weight and do more exercise, and
these good intentions often fall by the
wayside. Which is why they become
stereotypical jokes.
Starting new activities with friends, or
even acquaintances, is probably the best
way to develop good habits. After all, we
can certainly develop bad habits in the
company of friends.
We have been presented with a good
opportunity locally in the establishment of
a Port Alfred parkrun, which could be a
way to address those two pressing and yet
neglected issues of getting more exercise
and losing weight.
According to local organiser Martin
Neethling, the parkrun has been growing
steadily every week since its inception on
December 9. No doubt the influx of
holidaymakers who are already well
acquainted with parkrun in their own towns
or cities has benefited the turnout at the
Port Alfred parkrun, but it seems like locals
are also being drawn to the event.
It looks like a nice course that follows
the Kowie River towpath.
People love company, and even if you
aren’t already running with friends, it may
be an opportunity to meet people and
make new friends.
My personal resolution is to join that
parkrun. It’s only 5km so it’s not too
daunting. And it may be the very thing I
need to get more exercise and lose weight.
Then I can finally say I overcame the joke
of not being able to keep a New Year’s
resolution.
Thanks for help with son
ON December 23 my son,
for us to spend Christmas
help. I just want to take this
opportunity to thank everyone
who has helped me over this
time.
My son is now a man, and
he also sends his thanks.
Thanks for support and trust in 2017
Holistic EMS wish to thank everyone for their
trust and support this past year. We look
forward to continuing our service delivery
throughout 2018.
We hope you all had a blessed Christmas and
a fantastic New Year.
Huge salary differences
I RECENTLY spent a couple of
weeks in Johannesburg.
What struck me was that
cars, petrol, houses, groceries,
hardware, clothing and other
necessities of life cost the
same as, and in some cases
less than, they do in Port
Alfred. In some cases the
products sold in Port Alfred
are inferior to those sold in
Johannesburg.
Why then are the salaries
paid in Port Alfred much less
than those paid in
Johannesburg? In whose bank
accounts are those unpaid
portions of the salaries
accumulating, since the work
KAREN ROMANS
done is the same as that done
in Johannesburg?
For example, transferring
houses bought and sold,
serving customers, delivering
goods and so forth is the
same in big cities as in small
towns.

THE events of 2017 are now history and a new
year lies ahead… unknown, uncertain, ominous
for some and challenging for others.
Whatever the future may bring, we need to face
it with faith, hope and love, for these three remain,
but the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthians
13:13).
This world is in turmoil. Nature is wreaking
havoc in various ways in many countries. Crime
and corruption seems to be evident in every part
of society. The possibility of a third world war
looms ever closer as nations bulk their military
muscle. Even though the future may seem bleak
and depressing, Christians have valid reasons for
remaining positive.
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be
dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you
and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous
right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). The comfort of knowing
the Lord’s protection results in peace that
transcends all understanding. Trust in the Lord
and don’t despair.
The economy is a concern, but the Lord says:
“Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labour
or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his
splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is
how God clothes the grass of the field, which is
here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,
how much more will he clothe you, O you of little
fa i t h ” (Luke 12:27).
Each year that passes brings us closer to the
coming of the Lord. The events of today were
predicted in the Bible. “When these things begin
to take place, stand up and lift up your heads,
because your redemption is drawing near” ( L u ke
21:28). Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
This has been a busy season
I HOPE you have all had a
wonderful Christmas full
of the joys of family and
New Year this year
seemed to be busier than
ever and on the whole, the
municipality did a great
job. Well done to them for
coping with the huge influx
over this period.
Our security team in Kenton
made sure we had very few
reported incidents of crime. On
balance we had a great festive
season.
This must have rubbed off on
our visitors, as we have had an
unusually busy time showing
them homes, and preparing
offers for purchase.
Buyers’ appetite to buy has
MYHOME
to some extent been dampened
by recent events in the
leadership in the ruling party. I
imagine we will need to see
the direction that the new
leadership take to revitalise
commerce, reduce crime and
provide services. I am
cautiously optimistic. Having
said this, well-priced homes
are selling.
There’s something exciting
about new faces in town. They
often bring new ideas to the
community and our
various organisations. I
know what it was like
when I first came down
here. I joined every
concentrated on projects
However, I don’t know about
you, despite all this activity I
do enjoy having more parking
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
A VERY happy New Year to you all. We hope
that the year ahead brings you success and
happiness and that you have enjoyed the
holiday season, whether you are a local or a
v i s i t o r.
FOR those who have already travelled back
home we hope you had a safe journey, and
to those yet to leave, may your travels be
without incident.
THE holiday season is always a hectic time
for the town with about 25 000 visitors
descending on the beaches having a holiday
while many of the businesses in town are
busy providing services to them. Yet this is
the way of many businesses, with a feast of
activity over the two holiday periods of
Christmas and Easter and famine for the rest
of the year. So, despite a few who might
criticise there be no parking available in
town and at the mall, or that there is too
much noise or that there are just too many
people, our visitors are the life blood of
many local economy. Just one thing is worth
mentioning: please guys, leave the beach as
you found it and take your litter home with
you or, at least, find one of the many rubbish
bins provided. And, once again, thank you
for visiting our beautiful town.
CRIME is a big factor over the holiday
season, with thieves taking the opportunity
of residents taking a holiday and leaving
their homes essentially unguarded. And our
visitors can also be targets for criminals so
please keep to safe places and do not walk
by yourself, particularly at night. Be safe,
keep you valuable under lock and key and
out of sight of potential robbers and
burglars. Be extra vigilant of suspicious
strangers. Report these things to the police
and allow them to make sure everything is
safe. Better to be safe than sorry and, if they
are genuine visitors and come from major
centres like Durban, Johannesburg, Cape
Town or any other city, they will understand
your caution..
were destroyed and lives were lost in recent
an upper limit of in excess of R350 000 per
this problem as universities around the
necessarily the case, Ramaphosa’s must
first focus on reuniting the ANC and its
alliance partners before contesting the 2019
while Jacob Zuma still holds the position of
he might not be in that position for very
SEVENS STAR SPREADS JOY
World-ranked South African Sevens rugby
player Rosko Specman, born and bred in
Grahamstown, was in town last week to
visit family for Christmas. Specman, who
matriculated at Mary Waters High School,
said he and his girlfriend had been thinking
of doing something meaningful for others
while they were in Grahamstown, especially
for the less fortunate. Specman said: “I have
a soft spot for kids and we thought of
Christmas boxes for children in poorer
communities.” He decided on Sun City in
the northern suburbs of Grahamstown,
which is in the same area he grew up.
Specman said: “I thought of the childhood I
had, the memories of growing up in those
communities and what it would mean to the
children who often don’t get to enjoy treats
like that. It all just fell into place.” Fa m i l y
members joined in to make and fill the gift
bags, and they all hopped into two cars and
made their way to Sun City. “It was an
absolute blessing to be able to put a smile
on the faces of so many children,” said
Specman, who also plays Currie Cup rugby
for Free State Cheetahs.
NOISY NEW YEAR
No doubt about it, Grahamstown was at its
noisiest in many years at the stroke of
midnight earlier this week to bring in the
New Year. Many thousands of rands, in
Grahamstown alone, must have been spent
on fireworks - the bang variety and sky
rockets – that resounded across the city for
the first half-hour of 2018 on Monday
morning. Hopefully pets were safe and
sound in homes. It really was noisy. As
tradition would have it, the procession of
emergency vehicles – ambulances, police
vans, fire vehicles and others – wound their
way around the city to mark the New Year,
sirens blaring. Way back in 1963, I was on
holiday in a Durban suburb overlooking the
harbour on New Year’s Eve. Come the
stroke of midnight, everything went
berserk. Emergency vehicles sounded their
sirens and hooters, but the loudest of all
were the ships moored in the harbour that
sounded their booming horns. And there
were quite a few big liners in the harbour at
the time, not forgetting all the tug boats!
THANK YOU
A sincere thank-you, from my side at least,
to those who worked shifts on Christmas
Day and New Year’s Day while others
enjoyed the festivities that come with them.
There were many of them working, from
emergency staff to essential services staff,
too many to mention here. Hope you
enjoyed your time off!
OVERGROWN AND GRUBBY
Hopefully, as soon as municipal workers get
back to work after the festive season break,
they will start thinking in terms of cleaning
our CBD. It was looking grubby and tatty the
weekend leading up to Christmas Day. That
task, I do believe, is in the hands of the
health department, but the parks
department should take note that the
sidewalks and gutters in and around
Church Square are overgrown with weeds.
Surely councillors and officials attending
meetings in City Hall would have noticed
this. Or not? Oh, and while we’re on the
subject, maybe the Grahamstown
Residents’ Association can add the
sidewalk in front of the public library in Hill
Street to its list of places to upgrade and
beautify this year. What about plants and
rocks around the trees for starters?
CRICKET BUZZ ON LOCAL PITCHES
selected for the South African Schools’ Xl.
During the tournament Rushmere scored
an undefeated 55 against Free State.
CALTEX ON THE CORNER
There has been plenty of construction
activity on the south-eastern corner of the
Bathurst Street/Beaufort Street
intersection, and it all comes to fruition next
month with the opening of a brand new
Caltex fuel station. Developers Jon
Campbell and Mark Shelton said the
contractors are “almost done” on the fuel
side comprising the forecourt with pumps
(phase 1). Campbell said: “At a later stage
we hope to open a small convenience store
(phase 2).” He said rezoning was a difficult
process, but was eventually done, while
ground levels were difficult to deal with in
the planning process as the site is located
on a slope. Campbell added that some of
the management of the previous filling
station will be retained, as well as offering
the previous staff first option at
employment. Besides being the developers,
Campbell and Shelton will “trade the
business”.
HUNDREDS OF PARKRUNS
Four participants in last Saturday’s parkrun
in Makana botanical gardens have each
completed in excess of 150 parkruns –
Stavie van Aardt (164), Lynne Henson (158),
Peter Stockwell (157) and Lynne Marshall
(152). That’s a total of 631 parkruns!
Parkrun on that day attracted 77 entrants.
Meanwhile, five of last Saturday’s finishers
are nearing their 100th parkrun – Ron
Weissenberg (99), Susan Wentworth (97),
Harry Weissenberg (95), Natasha Agnew
(91) and Billy Morgan (91). First overall was
Richard Alexander (23 minutes 27 seconds)
with Mishelene Lagerwall first lady (25
mins 02 secs). A week earlier, on Saturday,
December 23, teenager Ryan Marshall was
first finisher in a field of 93 in a time of 23
mins 05 secs. Another young runner, Kaitlyn
Kruiskamp, was first in the ladies’ division,
finishing the 5km course in 25 mins 36
secs. Runners-up were Craig Marshall (23
mins 08 secs) and Candice Serfontein (25
mins 41 secs). Parkruns are held each
Saturday at 8am from the entrance to the
Makana botanical gardens.
NEXT VISIT
Staff members of the Port Elizabeth branch
of the SA National Blood Service will visit
Grahamstown on the second Tuesday of
each month during 2018 to conduct blood
collection clinics. Their next visit to the NG
Kerk hall at the corner of Hill and Beaufort
Streets is between 1pm and 6pm on
Tuesday, January 9.
TRAFFIC COP ON TWO WHEELS
A reader and I were chatting the other day
and he happened to mention Mr Archer,
once the Chief Traffic Officer of
Grahamstown. I remember Mr Archer
driving a light brown Opel van on patrol
duties, while the reader remembered Mr
Archer riding a motorcycle. That must have
been before my arrival in Grahamstown in
December 1962, I remarked. We wondered
whether the traffic motorcycle was a
Norton, Triumph or BMW. Who remembers
Mr Archer on his motorbike?
END OF AN ERA
The recent closure of the Sevenfountains
Sports Club 25 kilometres from
Grahamstown on the N2 to Port Elizabeth
was a sad occasion, according to
long-serving member and former president,
Jenny Emslie. The club served the farming
community of Sevenfountains for almost
130 years, but diminishing numbers among
farmers in the district led to the club having
to close down as it became increasingly
difficult to fulfil its sporting commitments.
NEW DIRECTOR
Rhodes University has announced that Ms
Nomangwana Mrwetyana has been
appointed Director of Student Affairs from
January 1. She has been Manager of the
Student Wellness section at Rhodes since
2014, and is currently pursuing a PhD in
Social Science at Rhodes.
DINING AND DARTBOARDS
I’m sure that of all the older
Grahamstonians and former
Grahamstonians who have retired to the
Sunshine Coast and elsewhere, a good
number either dined, danced or celebrated
at one of Grahamstown’s seven hotels in the
mid-1960s. The hotels, with their men’s bars
and dartboards, were venues for many a
wedding reception, club dance, annual
general meeting, prizegiving function and
21st birthday party. The Graham Hotel was
‘fa m o u s ’ for its ballroom, venue of many
dances and wedding receptions, and owner
Benny Goldberg was an ever-present figure
ensuring that everything was running
smoothly. In the mid-1960s, Mrs J Suttner
was the owner of the Carlton Hotel, situated
where Carlton Arcade and Checkers is
today. It, too, had a functions venue for
wedding receptions and dances, as well as
a men’s bar with access from the sidewalk.
The Cathcart Arms Hotel was well-known
far and wide for its dining delights, and its
Gluepot Bar was a popular ‘hangout’. Back
in the 1960s its owner was Keith Hill. The
Victoria Hotel in New Street, owned and run
by Leon Reich in the 1960s, was popular
with students who would partake of their
favourite brews at the bar and then pop
over to Bambi Snack Bar whenever they felt
hungry. Two other hotels in town were the
Grand in lower High Street (Mrs S Keey was
the owner in the 1960s) and the Goodwood
at the corner of Bathurst Street and High
Street. Then there was the Stone Crescent
Hotel a few kilometres out on the N2 to Port
Elizabeth. They had a popular functions hall
and braaivleis area. Students used it
regularly for 21st birthday parties and club
functions, and there were the occasional
bop sessions in the functions hall as well.
THEY KEEP RETURNING
Despite attempts made to clear our streets
and suburbs of cattle and donkeys, they’re
back – again.
mind that’s a very busy intersection.
RHODES FOR VARSITY SHIELD
Rhodes University’s 1st rugby team is one of
seven sides contesting this year’s FNB
Varsity Shield rugby competition that kicks
off next month, and Rhodes’s first match
will be a home game. Contesting the Varsity
Shield league will be Rhodes, Cape
Peninsula University of Technology,
University of the Western Cape, Tshwane
University of Technology, Walter Sisulu
University, University of Fort Hare and
University of KwaZulu-Natal. Rhodes plays
its opening match, against Tshwane
University of Technology, on the Great field
from 6.30pm on Monday, February 19.
HOPEFUL
It’s not likely that Makana Council would
even consider making a list of New Year’s
Resolutions to once again make
Grahamstown a city to be proud of. With
feedback from residents, I have compiled a
very short list of New Year’s Resolutions –
maybe a couple of Councillors will get to
read it, and it may prick their consciences.
Yeah, right! Anyway, for what it’s worth,
here’s a short list of the more pressing
items. While Grahamstown residents have
been urged to use water sparingly, water
leaks have sprung up, and continue to
spring up, on streets, pavements and open
spaces all over town. In some cases it takes
days before repairs are carried out. It
usually results in dug-up streets that
remain so for another few days. I won’t
dwell on the pothole issue, as that problem
is only too clear and obvious for all to see.
Residents are concerned that local streets
may soon become nothing more than gravel
roads. Cattle and donkeys continue to roam
city streets, causing a traffic hazard.
Something positive should be done about
this issue, say residents. There were no
domestic refuse removals for almost two
weeks over the Christmas period, and the
city is looking grubby. The feeling is this
should be avoided in future. Maybe it is best
not to inundate Council with a long list of
New Year’s Resolutions, but the above is for
star ters.
BE ADVENTUROUS, GO FLY A KITE
In a recent “Call Back the Past” item on
Facebook, a couple of photographs
depicted kites that youngsters used to
make and fly back in the 1950s and 1960s. It
has been many years since I last saw a kite
being flown. Remember them? Kites were
simple to make – some strips of bamboo,
string, tissue paper, glue and a hundred
metres of nylon string. I flew many a
homemade kite in my much-younger days,
mostly along the windy Atlantic coastline in
the Cape Town suburb of Milnerton. The
conditions at the Milnerton lagoon were
ideal for kite-flying, and Table Mountain
was a beautiful backdrop. Various ‘t ricks’
were performed, including dive-bombing.
Oh, what fun was had flying kites,
School in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and
will take up the position in July. Kingswood
Junior School’s Headmaster, Derek Braans,
DUCK AT BUSHMANS
Duck Chowles and Joe van der Linde will be
performing at Bushmans Bar & Grill from
8pm today. I remember attending tribute
rock concerts featuring Duck Chowles and
his band during festival time quite a few
years ago. These concerts were held in a
workshop in Bertram Street, and Chowles
would take on several guises, including
what I thought was the highlight of the
evening, that of Mick Jagger. Then he
stopped performing at festival.
Festive spirit at Kowie fun run
Lucky draws add
to the occasion
JON HOUZET
A
S is always the case at the annual
Kowie Striders Fun Run on Boxing Day,
there was a great festive spirit among
the participants in this year’s run
which started and ended at the Port Alfred
Country Club.
The event draws plenty of holidaymakers
and locals alike, with many serious
competitors in the 8km and 5km runs, as well
as families and folks just enjoying a stroll and
bringing their dogs along.
The weather was beautiful and the route
very enjoyable, part of which goes along the
scenic Kowie towpath. Several residents along
the route put out lawn chairs to watch and
cheer on the participants, and the cheerful
Kowie Striders marshals were very
encouraging to each and every participant.
There was a special treat for those nearing
the end – a shooters table at the water
station, providing a pleasant buzz for the
finish.
Each participant received a fun run glass
and there were plenty of fabulous lucky draws,
in addition to prizes for men, women, and
junior boys and girls in the top three spots in
the 5km and 8km races. There were also
prizes for those who came in fancy dress
costume, like the daring young fellow who
came in a bra and women’s underwear, and
special recognition awards like that for Trevor
Mackin, who completed the fun run with his
guide dog Vici.
The fun run is sponsored by Remax Kowie
and Compendium Insurance.
