The Star, part of the Star Media Group, scooped the three top awards – best newspaper, most improved newspaper and it also took out the supreme award which covers newspapers, magazines and websites. Venetia Sherson who judged the supreme award category said: “The Star is bold in design and bold in attitude. The Star urges its readers to engage in debate and reflect on the issues it deems important to the community. “Strong grass roots reporting, and tight writing are the hallmarks of the paper. It tackles big subjects with a sure hand and features a good mix of civic issues, crime and community stories.” Mike Fletcher who judged the most improved newspaper category said of The Star: “The paper is a cracker. It is a joy to read. Judging by The Star’s pagination growth, the readers and advertisers like it and value it too. “The Star is filling a vital niche for news and views in Christchurch. Every page is attractive. Every page is interesting.” It was a big night for Star Media’s team at the awards ceremony which was held in Christchurch on Friday. As well as The Star winning the top three awards, Kiwi Gardener was judged best all round lifestyle magazine, Gabrielle Stuart was the winner of the best senior feature/lifestyle journalist category and Bridget Rutherford was runner-up in the junior reporter and feature writer categories. Star Media also featured in the advertising awards. Vaughan Rowe – that won’t make the roads any wider, nor people drive safer, nor cyclists ride safer! Sadly. some point to motor vehicles to reduce the number competing with the cycleway. However, the best solution would have been to build a separate cycle path on this route like the rest of the cycleway and that would shut up the forever moaning car drivers who see it as their right to drive everywhere and at speeds that suit them. Gayle Elizabeth Lord – At the rate they are going the city council will have the whole city Fashion at 30km. There are schools all over the city without a lower speed limit so why do university students need this? Motorists need to pay attention and cyclists need to also. Have seen some dangerous behaviour from both. Pamela Neil – Cyclists need Gardening to pay registration! That is being considered Brisbane. They use the roads for nothing! James David Foote – Cyclists pay for the roads too. We pay our taxes, we pay GST every time we buy something. We live in our homes that we Motoring pay our council rates on. Most of us also own a car that we pay our registration on as well as fuel taxes when we fill up. By being safe. promoting and encouraging cycling, you add capacity to roads without having to spend millions by building new ones. The university has a much larger student body than schools do and have students coming and going all day. The entrances to schools are busy at 9am and 3pm, they have lower speed limits at those times as well as road patrols, which is enough. Trevor Taylor – I think we should have someone carrying a red flag walk in front of every car and truck in Christchurch. That way we will be able to eliminate all vehicles crashes. Nothing is more important than Lucinda Rees – How about 30km/h speed limits outside schools too as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Drivers just need to get used to this speed limit, as they have done in Europe. The traffic keeps moving, but at a safe speed. Wendy Charlotte Olivier – I have to laugh at this idea, people don’t even keep in the speed limits in a school zone. Bicycles are not meant to be on the roads, it is not fair to put that responsibility on a driver as well as all the other rules they have to keep to. I think cyclists have too much privilege and I think this needs to stop. Jason Gemmill – Absolutely insane! Total madness! SLOW DOWN: The proposed area around the university where the speed limit could be reduced. Anna Henderson – Yes good idea. A large number of university students cycle (which is a great thing). It’s also very much encouraged by the uni which puts the parking prices up exceedingly high on purpose to discourage driving. Two of my flatmates have been knocked off their bicycles by cars who were completely in the wrong and just didn’t look. At least if they’re going slower it might help. Graham Batchelor – Slowing traffic on this part of the Unicycle should have been part of the original design. I also think that this route which is used as a rat run from Clyde Rd to Kilmarnoch St be blocked at David Butler – Doesn’t work here, you have the chance now to build proper cycle paths like Amsterdam. Cars and bicycles don’t mix. Tanya Hyde – Not sure if lowering the speed limit would help decrease the number of accidents as it’s ignorant/ inconsiderate driving or cycling that’s the cause. But if a lower speed limit reduces the seriousness of accidents then that’s a start. But we need better education for both motorists and cyclists on keeping them safe on the road. If both switched places for the day they would understand the other side. I drive and cycle in the city and I find it scary being a cyclist and uneasy driving around cyclists. Mel Schmidt – Making the speed limit for cars lower won’t affect the sheer arrogance of cyclists who think the road is theirs.
