Papanui teens karate success
• By Andrew King
PAPANUI HIGH students
Britney Aldridge, Jade Taylor
and Aidan Batt all had
success at the national karate
championships in Wellington.
Aldridge, 18, won gold in the
female 18 and over, under-55kg
kumite, and the female under-21,
under-65kg kumite categories,
as well as bronze in the under-21
kata.
She said the victories were an
incentive, especially now that she
is ranked No 1 in her grades, to
keep working and getting better
at her craft.
“For me to be labelled and
QUICK: Britney Aldridge ducks a kick during one of her bouts.
ranked as a national champ is
awesome . . . and it just makes
me train even harder to make
sure I stay on top,” she said.
“Ever since I was a kid, the
Olympics had always been a
dream of mine. And now that
our sport is in the games, I hope
that 2024 will give me a chance
to make my dream a reality.”
Taylor, 16, won gold in the female
14-17 team kata and female
14-17 team kumite categories, as
well as silver in the female 16-17,
58kg-plus kumite category.
“Being a tomboy and having
two left feet meant ballet wasn’t
an option,” Taylor said. “It feels
good to achieve when you have
put a lot of time and training
into it.”
Batt, 14, received a silver medal
for his efforts in the male 14-17
team kata category. He said it
was all about the team getting a
result.
“Knowing my team and
I trained hours upon hours
perfecting our routine to end up
second in New Zealand is a great
success,” he said.
The event was held from July
15-16 and involved more than
700 competitors across 150
categories.
FORMER Christchurch Boys’
High rower Jack Lopas has
helped his crew power their way
to gold in the under-23 world
championships in Plovdiv,
Bulgaria.
He was a
member of the
men’s coxless
an exciting and
nail biting final.
The crew of
Lopas, Jack
O’Leary, of Central,
Ollie Ma-
Jack Lopas
clean, of Auckland, and Jordan
Parry, of Waikato, fought back
through the field to take victory
over Russia by 0.22sec.
was sitting in fifth position,
but then powered over the next
1000m to push into second
place at the 1500m mark.
The late burst of strength saw
them push into first place with a
time of 5min 41.85sec
Russia were second with a
