Application lodged to use
community centre site
• By Julia Evans
THE SITE of the Shirley
Community Centre is set to
become the new home of Downer
Group.
The space has been used as
headquarters for various different
construction companies
since the centre was demolished
in 2012.
And with its rebuild not
expected to begin until 2019, the
city council is processing the
latest application for its use.
Downer is set to occupy the
10 Shirley Rd site as part of the
Dudley Creek Flood Remediation
work.
Downer’s application said that
the established facilities at the
site are close to where it needs to
work and would be ideal.
However, there will be implications
for neighbours including
construction traffic and heavy
vehicles, noise, dust and run-off.
But Downer said it will limit
unnecessary vehicle movement
and use the existing environmental
management plan.
And it has a dedicated communications
team to deal with all
concerns and issues.
Working hours at the site will
be from 7am to 6pm Monday to
Friday and 7.30am to 12.30pm on
Saturdays.
The Dudley Creek work is expected
to finish in May 2018.
It comes after residents in
Guild St had issues with dust,
noise and run-off from neighbouring
Worthington Contracting.
However, the company left the
area to appease residents and
moved to a new site in North
Canterbury.
Warm welcome for principal
• By Julia Evans
BELFAST SCHOOL has
welcomed its new principal
with a special Mihi Whakatau,
a Maori welcoming.
Sue Elley, who is taking up
the role, said it was the most
wonderful experience.
She replaces veteran principal,
Peter Simpson, who sat at
the helm of the school for 23
years.
Belfast pupils welcomed
Mrs Elley with a kapa haka
performance and speeches.
And students and staff from
Hornby High School, where
she worked as the assistant
principal for four years, were
also there.
The Hornby students also
performed as a kapa haka
group.
“It brought a really nice
closure to that part of my life.
My previous students physically
took me to the new school,” she
said.
Above all, the mihi really introduced
Mrs Elley to the overwhelming
sense of community
that the Belfast School has.
“It’s such a strong community
based school . . . Belfast isn’t really
a suburb, it is its own town
on the edge of a city,” she said.
But the new role, will bring
some a new challenges that Mrs
Elley said she’s very excited to
begin.
It’s her first time as a principal.
However, she said with
the support of the school
community and collegian of
experienced principals she’s
in contact with, she’s in good
hands.
