Safety concerns on narrow road

IT’S ONLY a matter of time
before someone is killed
on a narrow road between
Northlands Shopping Centre
and Papanui High School.
That’s according to Papanui-
Innes Community
Board
member John
Stringer, who
has been lobbying
for safety
issues on Sissons
Drive to
be addressed

“A local fatality is a high possibility
soon if we do not take
action,” he said.
Mr Stringer said he witnessed
a crash where a vehicle went
through the fence into a
building at Papanui High
School.
“It could have hamburgered
a mum with a pram or a cluster
of Papanui students or cyclists
into the metal railing fence and
concrete wall,” he said.
“There is a very wide pedestrian
and cycleway alongside an
extremely narrow two-lane carriage
way flanked by concrete
slab walls which is becoming a

crash corridor. In a crash, cars
will bounce off into oncoming
traffic or people.”
The community board has
asked city council staff for an
audit of the traffic congestion
and safety of the road as well
as along Sawyers Arms and
Langdons Rds in a bid to find
solutions to the safety concerns.
That report will go back to the
board.
But Mr Stringer said the $18
million expansion to Northlands,
the Langdons Quarter,
will only add to the concerns.
“The loss of car parks could
make the issues worse,” he said.

SPORTS CAR PARK GRANT
The Belfast Sports and Community
Centre has been granted $1500 by
the Papanui-Innes Community
Board to go towards repairing
pot holes in its car park. The club
wants to repair the superficial
holes temporarily before looking at
raising $87,000 to repair and reseal
the entire car park. Due to the high
cost, the club will look to repair
the car park once earthquake
strengthening has been completed
on its building.
BOYS’ HIGH RUGBY TOUR

students received grants to
compete at the world schools
rugby festival in South Africa
from April 2-7. Ryan Barnes, Sam
Caldwell, Nathan Fahey-Baker,
Mitchell Hay, Ben Lopas, Sean
McKeon, Cullen Moody, David
Ni, Brandon Prinsloo and Luke
Timms were each given $200 to go
towards the trip by the Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community
Board.

At the request of businesses
on Hills Rd, 10min parking
restrictions will be put on Dudley
St. The dairy on the corner has
minimal parking outside on Hills
Rd so the parking on Dudley St
will give it three new spaces.
