2 Tuesday September 13 2016 Inside PEGASUS POST FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK News..........................3, 5, 6, 7 NO ONE disputes that repairs to the New Brighton Pier need to happen, but the timing behind them seems a bit off. Some want the repairs to begin after summer, especially with the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships in March. It has apparently been a good 15 years since the nationals were last at New Brighton and the best vantage point is apparently the pier – makes sense. But until the city council actually gets a contractor, they will not know if the pier will be open especially for this event. Seems reasonable to me that the city council should try to work with the community to make this happen. This week’s Our People will be a familiar face to Aranui High School pupils. PEGASUS POST Tuesday September 13 2016 3 News School buildings face demolition • By Fraser Walker-Pearce LOST BATTLE: Resident Veronica Henry is disappointed Burwood School will be demolished at the end of the year. It has been vandalised and neglected since its closure in 2014.. THE SITE of the former Burwood School will be cleared by the end of the year. The Pegasus Post has learned that the Ministry of Education intends to “remove or demolish” all buildings on the site. It comes after Burwood resident Veronica Henry fought a decision made by the MoE at the end of last year, that stated it was looking to demolish the buildings. The school was closed at the end of 2014, and merged with Windsor School on Burwood Rd to make the now Waitakiri School. She has lived next door to the site for more than 50 years, and wanted to see the former school turned into a community facility, which she said had been lacking in the Burwood area ever since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Mrs Henry said she is disappointed the Burwood community didn’t get a say in whether it was turned into a local facility. “Everyone was for it, everyone I spoke to. A friend of ours in Bassett St said he was happy to put flyers around to the neighbours asking if they were keen to get a centre started. “But I guess you’re dealing with the Government and things like that, so you don’t get anywhere fast. You can only but try,” she said. The MoE’s head of education infrastructure service Jerome Sheppard said this year the site has been used by Haeata Community Campus staff while the new super school is being built at Aranui High School, but after that there will be no use for it, and the buildings will be demolished. “After a school closes, we often keep the site and buildings to be used for other educational purposes. This year the site has been used by Haeata . . . [after that] there are no other schools in the Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme which are expected to need the site,” he said. Mr Sheppard said usable land is “relatively scarce” in the city and the MoE have a responsibility to make it available again if the site is no longer needed for education. It will offer the property to other government agencies, previous owners or iwi before the land can be sold on the open market. Council’s work recognised THE CITY council has been recognised for its work on the Aranui Community Centre. The city council’s project management was recognised at the recent New Zealand Project Management Awards for its work on the centre. It won three of the seven awards on offer, including the public sector of the year award for the rebuilt Aranui Community Centre, which was opened earlier this year. The centre was the end result of work between the city council, the Aranui Community Trust, the Christchurch Earthquake Appeals Trust and Lions International. City council’s junior project manager Selena Robertson won an award for the emerging project manager of the year for her work on the rebuild of the Wharenui Sports Centre. City council’s manager of capital delivery Darren Moses said the awards were great recognition of the work his team were doing to deliver the city with new community facilities in an efficient and cost-effective way. The city council team also won the project management office of the year award.
