New Brighton library is back
TWO-YEAR-OLD Henry
Ridpath was first in line to sign
up when the New Brighton
Library reopened on Monday
morning.
With a little help from his
mum, Amy Ridpath, Henry
got a membership card and the
opportunity to look around the
newly repaired library.
The library, on Marine Pde,
was closed for more than six
months so earthquake repairs
could be completed.
The building sustained moderate
damage in the February
22, 2011, earthquake, and work
included repairs to the concrete
columns and floors, replacement
of the east-facing first floor
windows, external painting and
new carpet.
While it was closed, the library
was temporarily relocated
in the New Brighton pedestrian
mall.
City council libraries and
information unit manager
Carolyn Robertson said the
library was the first in a series
of openings the city council had
lined up for the year.
The next library to reopen
after earthquake repairs will be
Lyttelton Library and Customer
Services on March 13.
New Brighton Library is open
9am-6pm weekdays, and 10am-
4pm Saturday and Sunday.
THE SOUTH Brighton
Residents’ Association wants
to know what happened to
earthquake donations for the
eastern suburbs.
They have submitted a comprehensive
letter to the Coastal-
Burwood Community Board
asking it to find out from the city
council exactly where donations
and insurance claims have been
spent following the February 22,
2011, earthquake.
Board chairwoman Kim
Money said the board and council
staff were already looking into
the spending before the association
raised its questions.
Funds queried include a $1.5
million donation from the Auckland
Council to restore green
spaces in the eastern suburbs,
of which only $15,000 has been
spent in New Brighton.
There was also $5 million donated
by an anonymous source to
the “children of the eastern suburbs,”
which was put in the care
of the Christchurch Earthquake
Appeal Trust.
While the $5 million has been
allocated, the association questioned
whether or not interest
was being collected on the more
than $3 million that is still set
aside for an aquatic centre.
Association chairman Hugo
Kristinsson is also questioning
the city council about specific
information on its insurance
claims, and what has been respent
in the eastern suburbs,
Mrs Money said questions
about the insurance claims were
very valid and the board wants to
get back to the association in as
much detail as possible to answer
all their questions.
Christchurch East MP Poto
Williams has also filed an Official
Information Act request on the
spending as well.
Controversial contractor
vacates Richmond yard
• By Julia Evans
A CONTRACTING company
which had Richmond residents
up in arms has now vacated its
site.
Worthington Contracting
had occupied the yard in Guild
St since the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, after
the Government
put emergency
legislation in place
allowing contractors
access to residential
Russell
Worthington
areas.
After nearly six
years, residents
were ready to see the back of
the company and laid several
complaints about dust plumes
and sediment to Environment
Canterbury.
However, after a “collaborative
conversation” between
neighbours and the company,
Worthington Contracting has
now found a new home in North
Canterbury.
Founder Russell Worthington
said they weren’t there to annoy
the residents, it was a matter of
proximity to their jobs, which
have largely been in the east of
GONE: Worthington Contractors has moved away from this
suburban Richmond site to a new location in North Canterbury.
the city.
“We’re listening to what they’re
saying,” he said. The company
has now moved away from the
area.
Although it had the city
council’s support to stay in
the Guild St location, Mr
Worthington said “we just were
trying to be human about it.”
CHANGES: The city council has changed its plan to landscape
Edmonds Park for flood mitigation work.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
No go for Edmonds Park path
• By Caitlin Miles
A PATHWAY will not be
installed at Edmonds Park due
to neighbours concerns that
it would be hidden during the
night time.
As part of Bells Creek flood
mitigation work, the park in
Woolston is being developed to
help ease flooding in the area.
The city council’s Land
Drainage Recovery Programme
investigated options for flood
mitigation in Bells Creek and
recommend a package of works
to reduce flooding.
Stage one includes a new detention
pond within the northern
half of Edmonds Park where
the sports fields are currently
located.
By realigning the creek to run
through Edmonds Park, it will
ease flooding in the surrounding
properties. The section of park
planned for the dry channel was
chosen as it is currently not used.
A sealed footpath on the
southern side of the landscape
planting was also planned to
provide access from Aldwins Rd
into the park.
A small wooden footbridge
across the realigned Bells Creek
at the eastern side of the park
would allow pedestrians to
cross from the northern to the
southern side of the creek.
Councillor Yani Johanson said
nearby residents were worried
about safety if the path was not
well lit during the night and
wanted to see it changed.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
had originally signed off on the
landscaping plans but the project
team assigned to the work
had met with nearby residents
and decided not to install the
pathway to ease their concerns.
PEGASUS POST
Brighton’s big day out
• By Julia Evans
MORE THAN 6000 people
joined in the community spirit
at Waitangi Day’s I love New
Brighton festival.
More than 100 volunteers
from 30 different community
groups provided free activities
for residents, including face
painting, a petting zoo, remote
controlled cars, the police
physical training course, doubledecker
bus rides and a showcase
of live music and cultural performances.
Sherianne Summer Taonga
said it was a great day for her
kids and she goes every year.
Started in 2011, as a community
spirit-raising response
to the earthquake, the festival
has grown in attendance every
year and for this event the trend
wasn’t broken.
Youth Alive Trust manager,
James Ridpath said events such
as the festival show there is a
misconception about people
leaving the New Brighton area.
“This event helps prove to
ourselves and the rest of the city
that we’re still very much alive and
active. Events such as this build
community pride and only people
who live or work in New Brighton
know why we love it so much.”
Hellers donated 1000 sausages
for a free barbecue which Leah
Young said was cooked for
the eager public by the New
Brighton Scouts.
The event was put together
by Youth Alive Trust, Rawhiti
Community Sports Inc, New
Brighton Project and Wellbeing
of the Burwood Pegasus Ward
community recreation advisers.
Rawhiti Community Sports’
Hannah Hill said: “It was great
to see thousands of people interacting
with our local groups and
organisations . . . it’s all about
building community spirit and
in New Brighton we have it in
PEGASUS POST
Lawrence shows he still has
Three north-west gardens have won awards
at the Christchurch Beautifying Association
summer garden competition. Julia Evans reports
NORTHWOOD’S Peter
Lawrence had a bulldozer
through his property early last
year but downsizing hasn’t
stopped him from adding
another premier garden award to
his 80-strong collection.
Mr Lawrence won four awards
in the Christchurch Beautifying
Association’s summer garden
competition, including the Ruske
and Walsh cups for garden cultivation
and maintenance.
His new garden still looked
“pretty good” but he was surprised
to win the association’s
top award, the Ruske Cup.
Behind his modesty, a lot
of time is spent creating and
maintaining his gardens. Mr
Lawrence said he is out there
each day.
“Starting with a water first
thing each morning . . . every day
is a new challenge.”
Mr Lawrence said it was “good
for the community and good for
the individual” to take pride in
their garden, especially because
Christchurch is the garden city.
In between maintaining his
own property, Mr Lawrence also
runs a gardening club and has
judged the street and garden
awards across the city.
Association president
Ron Andrew said in spite of
downsizing his garden by
half, Mr Lawrence deserved the
win.
“He sets an example for the
other members and the standard
is extremely high,” Mr Andrew
said.
Although Mr Lawrence wins
a lot of awards, new gardeners
were not discouraged from
entering the garden competition.
There were more entries this year
than any other.
Northwood residents Janet
and Brian Lovelock also won
seven awards in the competition.
This included the best display
of flowers and colour impact;
outdoor living; residential
driveway display and the
continuing standard awards.
Mrs Lovelock said they were
thrilled to have won.
Since retiring, the pair have
spent all their time together
in the garden, but that doesn’t
always make for a relaxing day.
“It’s full pressure, but it’s
still enjoyable or we wouldn’t
compete,” said Mrs Lovelock.
For them, the real beauty
comes from encouraging new
gardeners, and Mrs Lovelock
said if their garden inspires other
people “it’s worth it.”
They have been competing in
the garden competition for six
years since moving into their
new house but have already lost
count of the awards they’ve won.
Another north-west resident,
Peter Van der Zee, also won a
pair of awards.
His gold in the best tree/
shrub category and silver in the
Herbert Cup will now sit next
to Mr Van der Zee’s 251 other
gardening awards collected over
the past 30 years.
Although he has a massive
collection of gardening titles, Mr
Van der Zee said winning now is
still as exciting as when he won
GOLD: Peter
Keas win in Bamford’s send off
• By Gordon Findlater
THE LINWOOD Keas saw
off former Canterbury Bulls
captain Chris Bamford in style
by winning the Crosbie Nines on
Saturday.
The Keas 17-12 win over the
Hornby Panthers in the final was
Bamford’s (left) last for the club.
He left for Australia yesterday to
play for Orange CYMS in New
South Wales.
“It was a good way to send him
off,” said Keas coach Andrew
Auimatagi.
Bamford and the Keas made it a
perfect fortnight in the nine-man
game, backing up their win in the
Rolleston Nines last month with
a perfect run of results at Crosbie
Park.
The Keas went unbeaten in the
morning pool play, accounting
for the Riccarton Knights 23-0,
the Aoraki Eels 35-14 and the
Halswell Hornets 17-15.
They then defeated the
Celebration Lions 23-8 in the
quarter-final before a rematch
with the Hornets in the semifinal.
The encounter was just as
close as their pool play encounter
with the Keas prevailing 15-12. It
also doubled as a rematch of the
Rolleston Nines final.
The Hornets made their way
to the semi-final courtesy of
an impressive 25-18 win over
defending champions the Papanui
Tigers in the quarter-finals.
“I was really impressed with
Halswell. They’ve struggled a
bit recently in the 13-man game
but they’ve got a really tight-knit
bunch and they had a couple of
new recruits playing really well,”
said Auimatagi.
The Keas then met the Panthers
in the final. The Panthers defeated
Nelson Combined 23-13, and the
Aranui Eagles 10-0, on their way
to the final match.
In a rematch of last year’s club
final, the Keas once again proved
too strong for the Panthers.
“It was really pleasing after a
long day,” said Auimatagi
“It’s tough to get through six
games but the boys dug deep and
got the result we wanted.”
Keas prop Alex Todd was
named Crosbie Nines’ MVP,
while Panthers lock Corey Lawrie
was named MVP in the grandfinal
game.
The Keas will now turn their
attention to defending the Pat
Smith Trophy in the Canterbury
club competition which starts on
April 1.
Falck books ticket to Davis Cup
• By Gordon Findlater
BURWOOD PARK’S Reece
Falck has been named in the
New Zealand Junior Davis Cup
team.
Falck, 14, will travel to New
Delhi, India, for the Asia/
Oceania event, which runs from
March 11-19.
The Shirley Boys’ High School
student is the youngest member
of the three-man New Zealand
team, which includes Hutt Valley
student George Stoup, 15,
and Auckland’s Chris Zhang, 15.
Falck’s spot in the squad
comes on the back of winning
the national 14 and under title in
Auckland last month.
“I was hopeful of making it
this year, it’s really exciting,” he
said.
Before heading to New Delhi,
the New Zealand team will visit
Thailand, where they will have
the chance to play in the LTAT
ITF grade one tournament
in early March. It is the only
grade one junior tournament
in Asia during the month and
will feature some of the world’s
best under-18 players, including
junior world No 2 Yibing Wu
from China.
“It’s going to be pretty hard
even just to qualify there
because it’s grade one. I didn’t
play that well at my first ITF in
Christchurch last month because
I was pretty tired after all of the
national tournaments,” said
Falck.
The Junior Davis Cup, an
international team competition
for players aged 16 and under,
was launched by the ITF in
1985. New Zealand will have the
chance to qualify for the World
Group Finals in Hungary if they
EXPOSURE: Reece
Falck will have
the opportunity to
play some of Asia/
Oceania’s top players
at the Junior Davis Cup.
finish as one of the top four
teams in New Delhi.
The junior team will hope
they have more luck than the
senior Davis Cup team who were
beaten 4-1 by India in their Asia/
Oceania group one tie earlier
this month.
Falck, who is coached by his
father Andrew, had a fortnight
to remember in January.
He won the 14 and under
nationals, defeating No 1 seed
Nick Beamish 6-0, 6-2, in the final.
He then helped Canterbury
to victory in the 14 and under
teams event, beating Auckland
5-4 in the final.
Before that, Falck made it to
the second round of the 16 and
under nationals at Wilding Park
before being beaten 5-7, 6-4, 1-6,
by Stoupe.
Falck leaves for Thailand and
India early next month.

Our Executive Students, Waka Leaders, and Peer Support Coordinator attended
a leadership development workshop at the end of 2016. They underwent
sessions on public speaking, confidentiality and disclosure, our school values
(CARE) and the Mairehau Way, Youth Approach to Mentoring, and team building
and trust.
Students also completed an assessment to identify their top five strengths.
They were then coached on those strengths. The outgoing 2016 Executive
students talked about their own experiences and the importance of balancing
their academic and leadership commitments.
We all look forward to working with our 2017 student leaders.
How do we grow vegetables??
2016 saw a group of Year 10 students working 3 hours a week for 5 weeks to plan
and create a garden!
We visited Cultivate Christchurch Urban Garden who gave us so much information
and help with our ideas. So it was back to school where 3 students were
responsible for planning, purchasing and installing an irrigation system while 12
students built wooden planter boxes and planted seeds and seedlings in these and
some empty baths.
Uniform update
After several months of staff, family and student deliberation, the student
council has selected a winter jacket which is now part of our uniform.
The jacket is unisex with a hidden hood, waterproof outer and thermal inner.
Jackets are available from the school at a cost of $85.00. Payments can be made
by cash, EFTPOS or layby.
Lettuces, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, zucchini, peas, celery, a lemon
tree, herbs, flowers and a grapevine are now flourishing (amongst the weeds that
have grown over the Christmas holiday period!!) We have had many kind donations
that have allowed this to happen – Oderings, Fusion Solutions, The Warehouse,
Willowbank, and Mairehau High School Environment Committee – Many thanks!
The garden is part of cross-curricular learning which introduces students to
valuable life-long skills.
KIDSTUFF
Progress counts
in maths class
News
PEGASUS POST
If you’re a parent of school-aged children, chances are
that there is a subject they just don’t like. And for many
kids, that subject is maths.
Like many parents, Dale and Kirsty found that their
daughter Sayler, 8, just didn’t understand maths and it
was proving difficult to keep up at school. So, Dale and
Kirsty decided it was time to give Sayler that extra help she
needed and enrolled her in the Kumon Maths Programme
at their local centre in Fendalton. It was during the August
Free Trial, and so they decided to see if their older son Zach
might enjoy Kumon Maths also.
Six months later and both children are still doing daily
worksheets with Kumon. Maths is now one of Zach’s
favourite subjects and Sayler has demonstrated a real
motivation for improving in her studies. That Kumon
worksheets are timed makes this easy for Sayler to see, ‘She
is really keen to beat her time. I think having those little
goals certainly help’ said Dale.
A sense of achievement can go a long way when it comes
to engaging with maths. ‘Everyone likes it when they have
success, don’t they? Being able to see that progress is great’
said Kirsty.
‘Kumon focuses on maths skills - exclusively and
expertly’ said Marette Wells who runs the Kumon
Fendalton Education Centre. ‘The ability of the student
does not matter; Kumon brings confidence as they grow
into their potential’.
Kumon follows a method that develops self-learning in
children which is important to parents like Kirsty. ‘I think
it’s really important that our children know that if they
need to find out how to do something then they have the
skills to work it out.’
For more information contact your local Kumon
Education Centre or visit our website nz.kumonglobal.com
Back to school with confidence
At Kumon, students begin study at a level that allows them to build
confidence from day one. Students progress through the programmes
based on their ability rather than their age. Over time, students can study
advanced material confidently and independently for success in school
and everyday life.
Contact your local Kumon Centre to hear how we can support your
child’s learning.
The site will radically
PEGASUS POST Tuesday February 14 2017 17
When good pain goes bad
Without pain we would not live very long, pain alerts us to
tissue damage, it makes us hypervigilant, looking after the part
to prevent further damage and allowing repair and healing. For
example limping after rolling an ankle takes load off that part.
The understanding of how pain works
has improved hugely over the last few
years. Up until the 1970’s a relatively
simple Cartesian model of pain persisted
where, it was thought, pain receptors in
the skin sent messages to a pain centre in
the brain which resulted in some action
to avoid further damage. However this
did not explain how some people could
experience pain long after the tissues had
healed or the body part was absent after
amputation.
It is now known that pain is a product
of our brain and spinal cord, not of tissue
damage, nerves merely carry messages
regarding the state of our tissues to the
brain which decides if those signals are
something to worry about or not.
Whether or not something feels painful
or not depends on many factors not just
tissue damage, sometimes our pain can
outlast the healing of the injury or feel
worse than it should for the degree of
harm done to the body.
Through various mechanisms our brain
can turn the pain up or down. If we are
fearful of the what may be causing the pain
it will be worse, for example “my mother
had a pain just like this and she had
cancer” or “I wont be able to keep doing
my job – I’ll be unemployed and I’ve got
a big mortage”. Work issues, if you were
have a dispute with the boss or are being
bullied by a work mate, if a pain prevents
this from happening the painful sensation
will be greater. Stress in general from all
sources, earthquake repairs, family issues,
money worries will all heighten pain
levels.
In emergency situations getting out of
fire, shifting debris off someone after an
earthquake and so on our personal pain
will be turned down by our brain where
survival is the main issue. To a lesser
extend injuries received playing sport
won’t hurt until the game is over – “I
remember getting a bit of a bump but it
didn’t hurt at the time”.
It is usually because of pain that we seek
treatment – it is your brain telling you
to get it sorted. Effective treatment of a
painful injury also requires explanation /
education about how pain works and how
best to manage it.
PEGASUS POST Tuesday February 14 2017 19
AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
An extensive range
of lights
Braxton Car Lights is part
of the BE Group, one of
the largest importers of
car, commercial and truck
parts in New Zealand.
Specialising in car lights, Braxton
covers the entire South Island and
the combination of their huge
on-site range, national and
international networks, and a computerised
system to search and try to assist most any
request to the correct replacements makes
them the place to visit for all your vehicle
lighting requirements.
Conveniently located in Sydenham, they
have an extensive range of replacement
light fittings for most makes and models of
Japanese, European and New Zealand new
vehicles, both new and secondhand. They are
fully checked and in perfect working order,
and Braxton guarantee that all their fittings
are warrantable.
They import and export both new and used
car parts so that whatever make or model
your vehicle is, they may be able to help.
Containers arrive monthly from abroad, full
of new and used lamps, and within the BE
Group, over 100,000 lamps are available.
The team at Braxton Car Lights also
specialises in repairs for light adjuster and
light conversion of American car lights, and
their repair service includes plastic welding,
drying out and resealing, re-silvering and
lens refurbishment. They work closely with
garage workshops, and their services can be
arranged through your own local garage on
your behalf.
Sales manager Richard Vernimmen says
that their team is dedicated to saving their
customers’ money, whether on late model
cars with expensive parts or early models
where replacements are hard to find. The team
of three expert professionals at Braxton have
over 60 years of experience between them
in the automotive industry to help you with
your needs.
Their aim at Braxton is to supply their
customers the parts that they require
at a pocket-friendly price. And with
heaps of available stock, they will do
everything to provide a solution to their car
light-searching exercise.
Stop by to see them at 325 Brougham
Street, between Buchan and Gasson streets.
Email them on carlights@carlights.co.nz or
AN ECLECTIC ESTABLISHMENT
As featured in February STYLE Taste: Vanessa Ortynsky discovers
Urban Corner Cafe has much more to offer than initially meets the eye.
ON the former site of the Bower Hotel
in New Brighton stands the Urban
Corner Cafe (alongside with e
Bower), which is one of the most
eclectic establishments in the city.
Urban Corner is uniquely
Christchurch in that it’s constructed of
18 shipping containers. It’s a standout
on the landscape, situated near the
residential red zone and overlooking
the Avon River. Upon setting foot
inside this spacious establishment, you
immediately forget about its modular
construction methods.
With its warm and family-friendly
vibe, Urban Corner has become a
community hub for New Brighton
locals. e restaurant serves up brunch, lunch and
dinner on a daily basis. Menu items are seasonal and
the Pork Belly Burger served with coleslaw and
cranberry sauce is a must-try for summer.
ere’s also a kids menu and a playground outside,
catering to mums looking for a place to bring the little
ones for a play date. ere’s Farmyard Animal Day with
pony rides on the last Sunday of every month in
summer, weather permitting, which includes a Llama
with a bad haircut and ponies of all sizes. As well as a
separate shipping container that can be hired for kids
parties.
With plenty of entertainment for the older crowd as
well, ‘Stitch n Bitch’ is hosted by a local
artists and is every second Monday.
It’s an excellent spot to discover new
Kiwi artists and local talent.
e dining room is adorned with
brightly-coloured kitschy decor. You
can purchase any of the art that lines
the walls of this establishment. You’re
sure to get a laugh out of some of the
quirky tongue-in-cheek posters and
signage.
Sharing the premises with e
Bower proves advantageous as Urban
Corner features an extensive beer and
wine list without the central-city price
tag. e Friday menu comes with a
$20 price tag, there is always events
and special deals - including Wednesday and ursday
feed the family of four for $50. Keep an eye on their
Facebook page for even more stellar specials. If you are
looking for a takeaway, there is a full range of cabinet
available too.
A little bit different from your traditional cafe and
bar, this friendly place is sure to delight. If you’re
looking for a local eatery, or keen to experience the
warmth and hospitality of the eastern suburbs. Urban
Corner is a sure bet.
