6 Tuesday May 9 2017 Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi PEGASUS POST Your Local Views Personalising learning A recent educational conference in Singapore led Chisnallwood Intermediate school principal Justin Fields to reflect on the future of learning During the last week of term 1, I went to Singapore with the Canterbury intermediate principals to visit some local schools and attend an international learning conference. In one of my recent newsletters I highlighted a visit we had from Princess Elizabeth School in Singapore and I was able to reciprocate and visit them. The principal and staff who visited Chisnallwood told me that they were extremely impressed by how we personalise the learning, our extension classes, our collaborative teaching practices, the new mechatronics/electronics/robotics programme and the fact that we offer computer science. Education in Singapore is very traditional with large class sizes, students sitting in rows and lessons being predominantly teacher-led. I was surprised by the lack of IT use in classrooms. The great news is they want to change, but the burning question for them is how? I believe this is one of the reasons why Singapore hosted the international conference – they wanted to challenge the status quo and do things differently. This is not to say that their system is broken, but rather that they want to do things better for the students, to nurture creativity and personalise the learning. The reflections for me were firstly, that no matter where you are in the world, we all want the best for our students; secondly, that what we are doing in New Zealand and particularly at Chisnallwood is what we need to be doing, and finally, that networking and sharing ideas improves outcomes for all. It was an enlightening trip and I look forward to implementing the conference learnings as “we continue to challenge the margins of time and explore what is beyond” at Chisnallwood. But every now and then I despair a bit. Like on Wednesday when within three-and-a-half-hours fire trucks responded to three different cooking incidents. A house completely filled with smoke from a forgotten pie in the microwave in Sockburn was followed by a pot on the stove, again filling the house in Kotare St and a further incident in Bryndwr where smoke inhalation was the result for the elderly occupants. Any of these could have been much worse. A life or a house gone. But all of them were preventable. Stay in the kitchen. The smell of burning in your home can be frightening for anyone. More so if you’re blind. Turned out to be a tea towel smouldering on an element. The potential here was a bit frightening. I’ve not mentioned arson here for a long time. It’s still occurring but the removal of most of the empty houses in the red zone has made it less visible or newsworthy. A drum of diesel spread along the road in the early hours last Sunday in Wigram was lit and left by whatever morons thought it was clever. They’re still out there. PEGASUS POST Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday May 9 2017 7 News SING: L’Attitude Quartet, made up of Carolyn Duggan, Toni Griffin, Virginia Humphrey-Taylor and Patrice Driver, won the Sweet Adelines New Zealand Quartet Competition in Dunedin recently. A cappella group will head to Vegas AFTER WINNING the national championships, a cappella group L’Attitude Quartet is bound for Las Vegas. The group finished first at the Sweet Adelines New Zealand Quartet Competition in Dunedin recently. It is made up of members from throughout the country, including two from Christchurch. Carolyn Duggan, L’Attitude Quartet’s tenor, and Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, who sings the bass, both belong to the Christchurch City Chorus. The group’s other members are Patrice Driver, baritone, of the Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus, and Toni Griffin, lead singer, from the Bella A Cappella Chrous in Keri Keri. While getting together is a challenge, the women have achieved success through a passion for singing, dedication to independent vocal work and monthly weekend rehearsals. L’Attitude Quartet will represent New Zealand at the International Sweet Adeline Quartet Competition in Las Vegas in October. Home & Leisure Show playhouse competition and charity auction THE STAR Home & Leisure Show will feature a novel fundraising idea this year. Three teams will vie to build the most impressive and creative children’s playhouse, which will then be auctioned at the show on July 1. All funds raised at the auction will go to support local charities Birthright Canterbury and Tenants Protection Association Christchurch. Concept designs for the playhouses will be shared in The Star on Thursday. The teams will be vying for the ‘best architectural playhouse’ award, judged by a panel of experts, and the ‘people’s choice’ and ‘kid’s choice’ awards, voted for by visitors to the Home & Leisure Show.
