POLICE FOOT patrols have been 

brought in to try and stop youths 

brawling near the busy Shirley 

and Marshland Rds intersection. 

Fifteen youths fought at a bus 

stop near Burger King about 3pm 

last week, leaving one in hospital 

and six facing charges. 

Burger King Shirley manager 

Tina Sherma has welcomed the 

increased police presence. 

In the past few months there 

have often been up to 10 or 12 

youths loitering nearby smoking 

and drinking, she said. 

Mrs Sherma and her staff were 

threatened when they asked 

youths to move on. 

“I went to talk to them (and) 

they said they were going to 

chase me to my house and find

McDaniel said the problem can 

be countered by more policing. 

Five units were called to the 

brawl last Monday. 

The location is a big factor in 

causing problems. 

“The location (the bus stop) has 

a high volume of youths and foot 

traffic at that time of the day,” he 

said. 

Senior Sergeant McDaniel said 

the youths fighting last week were 

not school students as had been 

previously reported. 

“It’s not necessarily school kids, 

it’s young adults that aren’t going 

to school.”

Fire rages, homes at risk 


THE NEW boardwalk in South 

Brighton is set to be finished in 

the next couple of weeks. 

It will extend from Estuary 

Rd, where it meets with Caspian 

St, along the edge of the estuary 

to a walking track along the 

water front of South New 

Brighton Park. 

The construction by 

Bushnell Builders has 

been ongoing for about 

six weeks, said Tim 

Sintes, Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board 

deputy chairman. 

The city council 

budgeted $180,000 for the 

project. 

An upgrade of the 

small bridge near the 

South Brighton jetty has 

also been included in the 

construction. 

Mr Sintes said there was

boardwalk. 

“There’s so much interest out

A plan is being formed to 

organise an opening day walk 

for residents who want to visit 

the new boardwalk. 

GYM SCHOOL LEASE 

The Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board will 

recommend the city council 

grant a new lease to the 

Christchurch School of 

Gymnastics at QE II Park. 

Its current home at QE 

II was built in 1996 and 

was badly damaged in the 

earthquakes. Rebuilding 

on the current site is not a 

viable option, according to 

geotechnical and engineering 

investigations. The school’s 

preference is to relocate to a 

site in QE II Park where more 

favourable land conditions 

exist.

Garden theft breaks hearts

SmileDial, a 

charity which 

helps families 

who have a child with an 

ongoing medical condition 

or disability 

Support is provided by 

SmileDial to families through 

financial aid, advice, counselling 

and other activities, which aim to 

put a ‘smile on people’s dial’. 

Recently, one of the projects, 

SmileDial’s different type of 

perfect sensory garden, was hit 

by thieves for the third time, who 

stole trees which were planted by 

families. 

I want to change the world, 

I want to make life easier for 

everyone, and I want to make 

sure everybody has what they 

need, especially families raising 

children with special needs. 

I decided six years ago that I 

would try and provide the support 

to others that I was so desperate 

for six years ago, when I became 

the parent to a child who is a 

different type of perfect. 

I decided I would not allow 

anyone else to feel as alone, scared 

and overwhelmed as I did (we 

did). So I started a charity called 

SmileDial to be there when others 

aren’t. 

Recently, the media has 

discussed the theft of trees from a 

sensory garden our charity built 

in 2016. 

Like everything else, I have the 

choice of how I will deal with this. 

Yes, there is anger and frustration, 

but also there is a sense of 

defiance. 

I choose to look at the positives, 

the people who have offered to 

help, the people who have worked

to replace the trees and the many 

people who stand with me in 

defiance. We will not let a few 

idiots ruin something amazing, 

something that was created with 

love for those who are often 

forgotten. 

Why should I spend any more 

of my energy focusing on the 

negative actions of a few and let 

them destroy something amazing? 

Something built by many for a 

few, something created to provide 

a special place for all children and 

also those people who no longer 

carry their children in their arms 

but always in their hearts. 

I will not talk or write about 

those who bring negativity to the 

garden, but rather I will celebrate 

those who helped create it and 

those people who fill the gaps left 

by the trees with love.

be open on Saturdays

certainly frustrating when you 

want to report something that 

requires you to fill out a form 

at a police station, or you want 

to drop something off (found 

item), especially when you 

work “office hours” yourself. 

Opening Saturday mornings 

would be very helpful. 

Jen Shortley – But if it’s 

open and available for the general 

public when they need it, 

then they might actually report 

crime, which means National’s 

claims about the lowest crime 

rates wouldn’t be valid. Far 

easier to ask people to go all the 

way into the station in town 

(which they won’t bother doing 

for minor stuff) so stats look 

good, right? Safer communities 

together lol. 

Tatia Buckingham – I 

can see both sides of this. It’s 

hard for the police since . . . the 

police funding under National 

has been cut and has made 

their job so much harder so 

adding more hours would need 

funding. If they aren’t going 

to have it open every day, then 

maybe it could be just a shift 

of hours so that it is ‘manned’ 

at the times stats say are most 

needed. For example, man it 

on Fridays and Saturdays and 

close it Sunday and Monday 

or Monday and Tuesday. Same 

amount of hours just in different 

periods of time. The most 

high activity times? Don’t live 

out there so don’t really know 

first-hand, but was just my first 

thought. 

Peter Maguire – Saturday 

is the ideal day for the public to 

report minor crimes, drop off 

lost property, firearms inquiries 

and so many more services the 

police provide at a local police 

station. 

Your usual Monday-Friday, 

nine to five worker would 

benefit from a Saturday without 

the need to travel into central 

and find a car park. I’m sure 

there are many that would 

rather keep or throw away lost 

property, than traipse into 

central.

in to report something and a 

closed for four days sign was 

up. Found stolen passports and, 

yes, closed sign was up. Went 

in once more and got told to 

come back tomorrow as the staff 

person had to take a statement 

so had to close. Noted an issue 

that community policing could 

sort – closed. Same issue and 

person the next week – still 

closed. If you can’t report to 

the eastside police station, then 

there’s no wonder the stats say 

it’s not worth opening

justification for the station to be 

open What they mean is, that 

there is no money to pay for it to 

be open on weekends. 

Benny Fitz – Interesting 

term justification. Arguably 

the fact that crime is still being 

committed justifies a stronger 

presence. 

Do the crimes need to get 

significantly more violent or 

costly before police feel there is 

justification? 

Stephen Dickinson – The 

NB police station is a joke. 

Every time I’ve needed it, it’s 

been closed. Someone smashed 

my car in a parking lot, mid-day, 

like a year ago (and) was told I 

need to go to the police station 

for some reason I can’t 

remember, but NB was closed so 

had to find a way into town with 

no car.

“There have been issues over 

the years with school kids 

fighting down the alleyway here, 

it’s certainly not the first time it’s 

happened,” she said. 

Ms O’Keefe walked past who 

she believed to be the instigators 

at lunchtime last Monday and 

noticed them drinking. 

“They were just starting to act 

a bit strange and intimidating 

then. Then at about 3pm we 

saw them chase a boy onto the 

bus and I think that’s when the 

bus driver must have called (the 

police) to ask for someone to 

come down. About half an 

hour later it all kicked off,” she 

said. 

Ms O’Keefe said she has 

previously felt intimidated by the 

crowds which often congregate 

outside Burger King Shirley. 

“If you walk past a group of 

them, they all watch, and you do 

feel intimidated.” 

Other nearby businesses, 

including Z Shirley, Shirley 

Medical Centre and Lumino: The 

Dentists Shirley, did not want to 

comment on the issue.

Flying fox 

may be 

removed 

THE CONTROVERSIAL noisy 

flying fox at Muka Park in the 

Prestons North sub-division may 

be removed. 

The Coastal-Burwood Community 

Board will recommend at 

its meeting on October 2 that the 

city council remove the flying fox. 

After failing to comply with 

District Plan noise limits, the flying 

fox mechanism was disbanded. 

Following this, 488 people 

signed a petition for it to stay. 

The board then spent $15,000 

trialling a quieter flying fox cable 

and pulley mechanism. However, 

it still did not comply with most 

noise limits in the area following 

testing in June. 

The noise tests indicated the 

flying fox was within the acceptable 

noise limit for daytime use, 

but there was a marginal level of 

compliance due to there being a 

noticeable “squeak” noise. 

Now the board is set to recommend 

it be removed and moved to 

another park being developed in 

the area. Parks being considered 

for the flying fox include Kahu 

Kiwi Park and the Prestons Park 

sub-division.

manager is eating burgers to save 

troubled dogs. 

Marce ‘The Tongan Tornado’ 

Taulango will defend his title 

against five other contestants in 

the Lower 9th Diner’s burger eating 

contest on Saturday. 

Mr Taulango has raised money 

for charities in the past two 

annual events, in spite of the 

contest not being for charity. 

Competitors will get 5min to 

eat as many burgers as possible. 

Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue 

is the charity chosen by Mr 

Taulango this year. It provides 

food, shelter and re-homing for 

abandoned and rescued bullbreed 

dogs. 

In 2015, his charity was the 

Second Chance Dog Rescue, and 

Cure Kids in 2016, where more 

than $1200 was raised. 

Those making donations can 

either pledge money per burger 

eaten or make a contribution. 

For each burger Mr Taulango 

eats, he will raise $104. 

“The more I eat, the more I can 

help out the charity,” said Mr 

Taulango. 

Lower 9th Diner is now getting 

involved in the charitable act,

“In the first year, I entered and 

thought why not try and make 

it a charitable event and I ended 

up winning, which I didn’t really 

expect,” he said. 

Mr Taulango is hoping to demolish 

10 burgers this year. 

Last year, he managed to devour 

eight and a half burgers and 

six in 2015. 

No preparation has been done, 

other than training at the gym – 

a strategy which has worked for 

Mr Taulango in the past. 

“I happen to be up against professional 

eaters and I just try to 

copy their techniques,” he said. 

The charity is close to home for 

Mr Taulango, who owns a bullbreed 

dog himself. 

Abbey Vanderplas, founder of 

Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue, 

started the charity in her own 

home and expanded it with the 

help of volunteers. 

Mr Taulango’s wife Rebecca 

also helps out at the centre and 

walks the dogs.

East impressed with QE II 

City councillors

CITY COUNCILLOR David 

East has given progress at 

the new QE II site his tick of 

approval. 

And the Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board member has 

vowed to be the first to jump in 

the pool when it reopens. 

Cr East was one of three community 

board members who 

visited the site last Monday. 

The $36.5 million complex, 

scheduled to open in May, will 

include a 25m lap pool, a 25m 

learn-to-swim pool, recreation 

pools, a hydro-slide and a fitness 

centre. 

Cr East was surprised by 

the size of the complex, after 

some people in the community 

criticised it for being “underwhelming”. 

There had previously been a 

call for the pool to be 50m. 

“Long-term, we certainly have 

the ability to do it, but it is not in 

the city council’s plans to go near 

there in the short-term,” Cr East 

said. 

“Once you are inside, it’s a lot

bigger than you perceive. The 

pool hall is enormous.” 

He said the fitness centre also 

takes up a significant space. “You

Don’t fight fire unless 

you’re sure to succeed

I WENT to the fire on Clifton 

Hill, in Sumner, which recently 

destroyed most of a home. 

There were a few things there 

that are worth mentioning. 

Firstly, the occupants were in 

an unfamiliar house and once 

smoke began to restrict visibility 

it was fortunate that one of the 

group had familiarised himself 

with the route to the back door 

and was able to herd most of his 

family in the right direction. 

Secondly, and knowing human 

nature, understandably, the 

group leader tried to put the fire 

out. 

It was too advanced at this 

stage and all he managed was to 

receive very painful burns. 

He only evacuated the house 

when the smoke was too thick to 

breathe. 

He very nearly didn’t make it. 

I was asked later by media how 

the fire grew so large so quickly. 

There was nothing unusual 

about the fire growth here.

second year in a row on Sunday. 

The event will take place 

between 10am and noon and 

is run by organiser Ariana 

Wilkins. 

Mrs Wilkins is a volunteer 

who organised the event last 

year because of her love for the 

environment. 

“I just wanted to do something 

community minded and I’m 

really passionate about the environment 

so it was a win-win,”

OUR SENIOR A team – the 

Shirley Spartans – travelled 

to Dunedin to compete in the 

zone 4 South Island qualifying 

tournament. 

Our top six finish at this 

tournament has allowed us to 

attend the secondary schools 

national tournament in 

Palmerston North in October. 

Our first game on day one was 

against a solid Nayland College 

team, and we had a good win 

76-59. 

Our second game of the day 

was against a young Kaiapoi 

High School team. Our 

experience and depth led to a 

one-sided 106-42 win. 

Day two had us facing off 

against the two strongest 

teams in our pool. Coming up 

against Canterbury champions 

Cashmere High in the first game 

of the day was always going to be 

tough. The team put up a solid 

fight and showed some heart 

in the first half, but Cashmere 

proved too strong in the second 

half and the final score was 53-93 

to Cashmere. 

The second game of the day 

against Otago Boys’ High was 

do-or-die for us. If we lost we 

would lose our chance to go to 

nationals. Otago came out strong 

at the start of the game and were 

leading by nine at the end of the 

first quarter. Luckily for us, over 

the next three quarters we played 

some of the best basketball we 

had played all season. 

After leading comfortably 

during the last quarter, we had a 

few scares as the Otago guards 

hit a barrage of three-pointers, 

but luckily we showed composure 

and finished the game off, 

eventually winning 106-99. Sean 

Kelly played his best game of the 

tournament and led from the 

front for the entire 40min. He 

scored an impressive 36 points. 

He had strong support in scoring 

from our trio of big bodies – Joel 

Jeffrey (22pts), Josh Thomson 

(14pts) and Loyal Patelesio 

(10pts). This game was easily our 

best of the tournament. 

On day three, we finished off 

the last game of pool play by 

comfortably beating St Thomas’ 

96-56. This was another game 

were everyone played good 

minutes and all 11 players 

contributed on the score sheet. 

Our quarter-final match-up 

later in the day was against 

the No 1 seed from pool A – 

Rangiora High. This game was 

important because, if we won, 

we were guaranteed a spot at 

nationals. The final score was a 

hard fought 77-60 win to Shirley. 

Our semi-final match-up had 

us playing one of the tournament 

favourites in Christ’s College. The 

boys came into this game with 

a lot of belief and were leading 

32-30 at the end of half-time. 

Unfortunately, we ran out of 

steam in the second half and 

the big minutes played by our 

key boys caught up with us. Silly 

mistakes and a lot of missed 

shots, combined with a lift in 

intensity by Christ’s in the second 

half, led to a one-sided second 

half. After leading at half-time we 

went down 45-70. 

Our last game of the 

tournament was a play-off for 

third and fourth against Waimea 

College. 

We desperately wanted to come 

third and came out strong in this 

game. The boys didn’t let up the 

whole game and for the third 

time in the tournament, all 11 

players contributed on the score 

sheet. 

The game turned into a 

runaway win for Shirley and the 

final score of 91-47 reflected this. 

It was a successful tournament 

for the Shirley Spartans. 

Everyone involved was pleased 

with our third place finish in the 

South Island. Now the boys look 

ahead to nationals. This will be 

a great experience for the entire 

team and should give them an 

idea of where we are ranked 

amongst the top 24 teams in the 

country. 

A big thank you to Nat Connell 

who put a lot of time and effort 

into the team over the year. 

Special thanks also to Russell 

Stocks, our teacher in charge 

of basketball, who was team 

manager and worked hard to 

get us into the tournament and 

cooked the team some delicious

Wainoni club‘s young 

boxers take out titles

IZYAH HESP and Daniel Meehan of the 

Smiling Tigers Boxing Club won titles at 

the New Zealand Boxing Championships 

last week. 

It was an all-Canterbury affair in the 

cadet under-57kg category with Meehan, 

14, squaring off against 12-year-old 

Hamuera Tainui from the Woolston 

Boxing Club. 

Meehan won with a split decision and 

said he was proud of the way he fought but 

there was room for improvement. 

“It was alright, it wasn’t my best fight. I 

can definitely improve. It was good to get 

experience and see how it is in different 

areas,” he said. 

Aranui’s Hesp, 12, won the cadet under- 

50kg title and said it was a great step towards 

his dream of an international career. 

“I was happy to make my family proud. 

It was a good experience,” he said. 

Fighters from the Wainoni-based 

Smiling Tigers Boxing Club had a solid 

showing at the event, which ran from 

Monday to Friday last week, with a 

number of others just missing out on titles. 

Sam Burdett-Clark, 29, was runner-up 

in the under-64kg category, and Jarrod 

Gear-Ngatai, 16, was runner-up in the 

under-70kg junior category. 

Wiremu Herbert, 26, lost in the semifinal 

of the under-64kg category, and 

Harry Waters, 24, lost in the semi-final of 

the under-69kg elite category. 

Canterbury Boxing Association team 

manager Holly Sullivan said it was one of 

the “greenest” teams they have taken to the 

national championships in quite a while. 

The Canterbury team were awarded the 

Malcolm Treston Shield for the most wins 

at the competition.

It was an annual event which 

about 40 pupils attended this

All pupils were given a lesson 

and had the option to ski or 

snowboard.

experience for children who had 

never visited the snow or mountains

take basketball or touch, they

and tramping a whole pile of

experienced river crossings and 

learnt how to make food on a 

gas cooker.

at Burwood Hospital, charity 

shops and the Step Up Club, 

an organisation for young 

children with down syndrome, 

helped Caitlin take out the 

award. 

Ensuring a safe work place 

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe 

work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the 

wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that 

in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, 

but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or 

on to the sports field? 

not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place 

can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators 

does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy 

machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance 

service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid 

course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. 

take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high 

risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that 

they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability 

to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course 

of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium 

risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a 

spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight 

hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 

26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, 

hypothermia and poisonings. 

The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in 

fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most 

common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children 

are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in 

australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents 

or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far 

behind those in the workplace. 

The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 

6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk 

environments. This course covers many of the skills required to 

deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result 

in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes 

such as motor vehicle accidents. 

if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask 

your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the 

course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. 

Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your 

location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is 

up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where 

it is located.

TOMATO AND MOZZARELLA 

WITH CRUMBED 

EGGPLANT 

Ingredients 

1 Eggplant, sliced into 1cm 

rounds 

2 Eggs, lightly whisked and 

seasoned 

1 cup Breadcrumbs 

¼ cup Chopped fresh herbs, e.g. 

parsley or chives 

1 bottle Oil, enough for cooking 

eggplant 

2 cups Tomatoes, sliced or 

chopped 

2 whole Mozzarella cheese 

1 cup Basil leaves 

1 drizzle Lemon-infused olive 

oil, to serve 

Directions 

Firstly crumb the eggplant. Dip 

into seasoned egg, then roll into 

the breadcrumbs and parsley 

combined in another bowl. Set 

aside in the fridge until ready to 

cook. 

Into a frying pan pour a little 

oil. Fry the eggplant on a medium 

heat to ensure they cook 

right through, turning once to 

brown both sides. 

Onto a platter, place the eggplant, 

tomatoes, torn mozzarella, 

basil and salt and pepper. Drizzle 

over the lemon infused olive oil 

then serve. 

MOZZARELLA AND PESTO 

SCHNITZEL PARCELS 

Ingredients 

1 Salt & freshly ground pepper, 

to season 

8 slices Beef schnitzel 

250g Mozzarella cheese, sliced 

¼ cup Basil pesto 

1 Tbsp Olive oil 

Directions 

Season schnitzel with salt 

and pepper and lay on a work 

surface. Arrange two slices of 

mozzarella on one half of each 

schnitzel and top each with a 

heaped teaspoon of pesto. 

Fold the empty side of each 

schnitzel over to cover the filling 

and secure by threading 

two toothpicks through each 

schnitzel parcel. Heat a non-stick 

frying pan, add a film of oil and 

place schnitzel parcels in the 

pan. Cook over a medium heat 

for 2 to 3min on each side, or 

until browned on both sides and 

cheese has melted. 

SWEET ORANGE, DATE AND 

MINT SALAD 

Ingredients 

½ cup Freshly squeezed orange 

juice 

1 Lemon 

3 Tbsp Honey, mild 

4 Navel oranges 

3 Mint leaves 

8 Dates, moist 

2 tsp Orange blossom water, 

optional 

Directions 

Put the juices (orange and 

juice of one lemon) and honey 

into a small pot and gently bring 

to the boil. Simmer until reduced 

by a third. Cool. 

Place an orange on a board 

and use a sharp serrated knife 

to cut a slice off each end. Stand 

the orange on one end and cut 

off all the rind and pith. Lay the 

orange on its side and cut into 

thin slices. Place the slices in a 

shallow bowl. Repeat with the 

remaining oranges, laying the 

mint leaves among the orange 

slices. 

Stone the dates and cut into 

chunks. Pile on top of the orange 

slices. Add the optional orange 

blossom water to the syrup and 

pour over the salad. If possible, 

set aside for an hour before 

serving.

worldwide since the international organisation’s first project

Meet the Team 

Paul Perry - Owner 

Paul has a very extensive 42 years’ experience in the Collision 

Repair Industry. In 1975 Paul completed his apprenticeship 

with “Farmers” (whom were later bought out by Blackwells). 

Paul continued to work for Blackwells until 2007 when he 

decided to find something more challenging for himself. In 

2007 Paul broadened his abilities and began working for 

Truck Worx doing structural repairs on Commercial Trucks 

until he decided to find work closer to home. 

Paul was employed by Terry Stevenson Collision Repairs at 

the end of 2007, which he then went on to purchase with his 

wife Shanel in 2016, which is when QEII Collision Repairs Ltd 

was established. During this time, Paul has acquired his I-Car 

Recognition Silver Certificate in 2017. 

Gary De Pina 

Gary is the go-to-guy when it comes to anything involving the 

Collision Repair Industry after 34 years in the trade. Gary completed 

his apprenticeship as a refinisher/painter at Motor Inn Panel Beaters 

(which Hammonds then bought out in 1990) in 1987 before moving 

on to Nui Ngakau in 2002 as a tutor, training students for the 

Collision Repair Industry, for 18 months. In late 2003 Gary took up 

the role of Shop Manager at New Brighton Panel Beaters for 8 years 

but due to the 2011 February Earthquakes this business ceased 

trading. Gary then took up the role as estimator for Terry Stevenson 

Panel Beaters for a period before moving on to Ferrymead Panel 

and Paint as estimator, as well. As of 2016, Gary returned to QEII 

Collision Repairs Ltd (previously Terry Stevenson Panel Beaters) as 

Manager and has since achieved his Platinum Certificate. 

Victoria Tiopira 

Victoria was employed by Terry Stevenson Panel Beaters when she was 14 

in 2011, while she was still at school during the holidays, as a car detailer 

& shop labourer. Spring of 2012 Victoria moved to Hokitika and went 

on to work at the Hokitika Glass Studio when she decided to add a little 

adventure to her life while she was still young. In 2013 Victoria decided to 

return to Christchurch to make NCEA her main priority alongside working at 

McDonalds Part-Time. Victoria completed NCEA Level 1, 2 & 3 by 2015 and 

decided to leave school early and continue working at McDonalds Fulltime. 

Victoria had a gorgeous little boy in 2016 and decided shift work didn’t suit 

her family anymore and went on to work as a telemarketing representative 

for a few months. Telemarketing wasn’t what she enjoyed so she left and 

returned to QEII Collision Repairs Ltd (previously Terry Stevenson Panel 

Beaters) as a Car Detailer & Shop Labourer and eventually was promoted 

into the role of Financial Administrator at the beginning of 2017. 

Shanel Tiopira - Owner 

Shanel has worked behind the scenes of the Collision Repair Industry for 14 years as a Business 

Administrator and the past year as Administrator/Business Owner of QEII Collision Repairs Ltd. In 

1988 Shanel began working for Kmart Hastings in the Retail service sector before acquiring her 

Diploma of Business & Management in 1990 and moving to Christchurch to continue working at 

Kmart Riccarton as a Trainee Manager. By 1992 Shanel had been promoted to Manager at Kmart 

Riccarton, Papatoeoe, The Palms Shirley stores and again Riccarton when she decided that she 

wanted a change out of the retail scene. In 2001 Shanel moved on to iDispatch where she became 

supervisor in Communications. (This was the same year she also met her husband Paul Perry who is 

currently also her Business Partner at QEII Collision Repairs Ltd.) In 2003 Shanel went to visit Hubby 

at work (Terry Stevenson Panel Beaters) for lunch and she hasn’t left the Collision Repair Industry 

since. After working 2 jobs for a year she decided she wanted to continue working in the Collision 

Repair Industry and stepped back from iDispatch in 2004. When the opportunity arose to purchase 

the business, Shanel & Paul took the opportunity and established QEII Collision Repairs Ltd in 2016. 

Nikkola De Pina

& Paint Pre-Trade through SIT, 

Wigram. Josh was employed by 

Terry Stevenson Panel Beaters 

at the beginning of 2016 as a 

Car Groomer/Labourer before 

being offered a MITO Refinishing/ 

Painting Apprenticeship at the 

beginning of 2017 with QEII 

Collision Repairs Ltd. 

Dave has 30 years Panel Beating experience behind him and continues to upskill his 

knowledge in the Collision Repair Industry to achieve his Bronze Certificate. In 1978 

Dave undertook his Panel Beating Apprenticeship at Chassis Repairs Christchurch before 

venturing off into the world travelling & working overseas in 1984 for 3 years. On return, 

Dave went back to contract Panel Beating for Chassis Repairs until 1999. After 12 years 

of Panel Beating Dave decided he wanted a complete change of scenery, so he moved on 

to sales for 6 years. When returning to the Collision Repair Industry, Dave worked for Atkin 

Collision Repairs before being employed by Terry Stevenson Panel Beaters in 2015 and 

was then offered a position at QEII Collision Repairs Ltd in June 2016. 

Leofard Galacia 

Leofard graduated high school in the Philippines in 1995 and had already 

decided to pursue a career in the Collision Repair Industry. Leo gained his 

Spray Painting and Panel Beating Certificate while still at high school and 

began work immediately at the Mercedes Benz Factory in the Philippines. Leo 

worked here for 4 years before moving on to work for the Toyota Factory, also 

in the Philippines for another 8 years. Following this, Leo transferred to another 

Toyota Factory in Qatar for another 8 years before deciding to move to New 

Zealand in 2014. In 2014 Leo was taken under the wing by Terry Stevenson 

Panel Beaters as a Spray Painter before continuing his contract with QEII 

Collision Repairs Ltd in 2016. 

Steve Hearne 

Steve began his journey through 

the Collision Repair Industry in 

1991 at Prestine Panel & Paint 

where he started his Spray Painting 

Apprenticeship. A year later, Steve 

transferred to City Panel & Paint 

as a refinisher for 3 years. In 1996 

Steve took over the business and 

established “Steve’s Autospray”. Steve 

went on to expand his family in 1998 

and a lot of time goes in to running 

such a big business so he decided 

to let it go and became a manager 

at Auto Body Refinishers for 3 years. 

Until present, Steve has offered his 

expertise of Spray Painting to various 

business’ before coming to work for 

QEII Collision Repairs Ltd in 2016 as a 

Spray Painter. 

Wilfredo Salazaar 

Wilfredo has worked in many different environments 

of the Collision Repair Industry over the past 29 years. 

Wilfredo graduated high school in 1988 with a Panel 

Beating Certificate and went on to work for multiple 

Panel Beating businesses in the Philippines for a 

period of years, the longest being 6 years at a Nissan 

Dealership. Wilfredo then wanted to develop more 

knowledge in the Collision Repair Industry so moved 

his sights on to Panel Beating in Saudi Arabia for 6 

years. With such an intense lifestyle, Wilfredo wished to 

find somewhere more comfortable to work and moved 

to New Zealand in 2015 where he was hired by Terry 

Stevenson Panel Beaters. Wilfredo then went on to 

continue working for QEII Collision Repairs Ltd in 2016. 

Christine Keane

QEII Collision Repairs Limited was established in June 2016 by Shanel Tiopira and Paul 

Perry after taking over a previously established Collision Repair Shop. QEII Collision Repairs 

Ltd are active members of the Collision Repair Association (CRA) as well as the Motor Trade 

Association (MTA) and are respected, approved repairers to various Insurance Companies 

including but not limited to IAG, Tower, AMI, Lumley, NZI, NAC, State and Lantern 

Insurance. To retain a contract as an approved repairer with Insurance companies, requires 

the business to maintain a certain amount of training through approved training agencies 

for all staff. Thanks to I-Car as well as MTA, QEII Collision Repairs Ltd has successfully 

assisted two employees reach a goal of a Silver Certificate and Platinum Certificate over the 

past year. We would like to acknowledge RJP Panel & Paint Supplies, Kaiapoi for supplying 

all the paint that went into designing, refurbishing, and creating our fleet of “cool soda”-blue 

courtesy cars. Alongside RJP, we would also like to thank Paul and his team at SignBiz 

for all our courtesy vehicle signage as well as our customised building signage. Finally, we 

would like to take the opportunity to thank the community for their on-going support in their 

local business. Each year we give back to the community by making donations to the local 

primary schools as well as the Kid’s Foundation and Children’s Hospital. 

Stewart Fitzgerald 

Stewart was a part of the Terry Stevenson Panel Beaters Team as of early 2014 

as a Labourer/Groomer before quickly taking up the opportunity of becoming a 

labourer in the Panel Shop. After a few months experience in the panel shop, 

Stewart moved on to the paint shop as a labourer before deciding he wanted to 

start his own business. Although Stewart no longer works in the Collision Repair 

Industry, he still shows his support consistently by offering his new business 

venture services to us and to our customers. In 2016, Stewart established his 

own Vehicle Towing Business ‘Christchurch Towing Services’ which we use 

when customers vehicles are not drivable and this includes Insurance work 

as well. Early 2017, QEII Collision Repairs Ltd sponsored Stewart to enter a 

demolition derby using one of our retired courtesy vehicles and to our utmost 

joy, Stewart won! We couldn’t be prouder of how far Stewart has come today 

and we thank the support we continue to receive from him and his business.
