smoke alarm batteries?<br />

DAYLIGHT SAVING has come<br />
and gone, so my hope is that<br />
everyone has taken the time to<br />
swap the batteries in their smoke<br />
detectors.<br />
This should be a tradition in<br />
Kiwi households, but the reminder<br />
is still there.<br />
If you don’t change them the<br />
alarms will probably still work.<br />
But when they go flat enough<br />
for the annoying little squeak<br />
to start squawking I can almost<br />
guarantee it’ll happen at between<br />
2am and 4am.<br />
That’ll make the rest of the<br />
night a lot of fun, won’t it?<br />
There were three oven fires last<br />
week including one in Mairehau<br />
on Wednesday at about 4pm<br />
where our troops had to break in.<br />
It appears the stove was left on<br />
when the occupants went out.<br />
They’re lucky to have a house<br />
left.<br />
An earlier fire in Richmond<br />
was confined to the inside of the<br />
oven.<br />
Unfortunately, for the people in<br />
the house what was in the oven<br />
was their roast pork for tea.<br />
The crackling ignited.<br />
That’s a waste.<br />
I liked the story behind a call to<br />
Linwood last Friday.<br />
There was no fire but the elderly<br />
diabetic caller was desperate to<br />
eat to keep his sugar levels right.<br />
However, his power had gone<br />
out halfway through cooking.<br />
He called police, who were flat<br />
out.<br />
Once again the increasing<br />
co-operation between emergency<br />
services resulted in a request<br />
across the combined communications<br />
centre floor.<br />
Woolston fire crew were sent.<br />
They reset the power in the<br />
house.<br />
Cooking recommenced.<br />
Meal made.<br />
A small story with a happy<br />
ending.<br />
Waitakiri School pupils took part in Keep New Zealand<br />
Beautiful Clean Up week on <strong>September</strong> 11 to 17. The pupils<br />
took time out of their lunch break to collect rubbish around<br />
the red zone, Burwood Park and Horseshoe Lake.<br />
