More than 20 rabbits, some of which are black in colour, have been spotted on the roundabout at Anzac Drive, Travis and Frosts Rd, and the junction of Anzac Drive and New Brighton Rd. But they caused traffic concerns, with motorists driving slowly to look at them and others parking and crossing Anzac Drive to get to the roundabout. In November, the New Zealand Transport Agency said the highway maintenance team was looking to put a rabbit control operation in place to deal with the safety issue. That may have included culling the rabbits, or catching and releasing them elsewhere. The idea sparked outrage, with many saying to leave the bunnies alone. Mr Brown, along with Jaz and Montana, 14, were spotted by the Pegasus Post near the Christchurch Yacht Club and duly played ball for a photo. But Mr Brown said it wouldn’t be a proper summer without loading two of his daughters, a few towels and some food into the car to head off to Moncks Bay. The afternoon out was one last hurrah on his holiday break. “You’ve just got to spend summer around the water, it wouldn’t be right otherwise,” he said. Jaz seemed a bit of a water baby, but the cool temperature meant it took a little more convincing before Montana hit the water. In fact, Mr Brown had to throw her in. “You’re going in, don’t worry,” he said, as she went in with a great splash. Fortunately for Montana and Jaz, there was one tradition that they could look forward to after a day in the sun. “There’s nothing like coming down here and we always get a big ice cream on the way home,” Mr Brown said.
