Facebook us onfacebook.com/riseupchristchurch/ Trust to keep post shop going TOM DOUDNEY Residents of the Linwood Village area will continue to have a post shop in their midst, at least for the time being, thanks to a community trust. Te Whare Roimata took over operations at Stanmore Book & Post Shop yesterday and is working on plans to keep it going as a community-run social enterprise. The post shop was run for the last 27 years by Berwyn Stevenson but he retired on Friday. Te Whare Roimata coordinator Jenny Smith said keeping the post shop going would be a challenge but it was important for the community. “The area was very badly damaged by the February [2011] quake and we lost over two thirds of the shopping centre,” she said. “It’s a post shop that services the local area and many older people, and it has been an important service and meeting place for that community for many years.” The post shop will be operating on shorter opening hours of 9am-3pm for the next month but will move back to 9am-5pm after that. Ms Smith said it had been a frantic effort to get everything organised and for people to learn the systems in time to take over yesterday. “We have only had about 10 days to get to this point.” The trust intends to consult the community on possible income generating ventures to support the post shop into the future. The Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board has granted Te Whare Roimata $5000 from its Discretionary Response Fund for starting the project, including a feasibility study to assess its ongoing viability. Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said the Linwood Village area had been under “significant stress” for some time but the trust’s move was a positive step. “The post shop closing would be one more real hardship for that community,” she said. PROGRESS: Members of the St Martins community were on site yesterday to mark the beginning of work on their new community centre. Work starts for new community centre Work has begun on the new community centre for St Martins. The new centre is being built on the site of the old St Martin’s Voluntary Library in Wades Ave and is expected to be completed by the end of year. The voluntary library building had been badly damaged in the earthquakes and was demolished under an order from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority. It includes space for the voluntary library, community use areas, a kitchen, toilets, storage and outdoor breakout spaces. “This facility will be a real hub for the residents with carefully designed community spaces and a welcoming exterior,’’ city council community capital delivery manager Darren Moses said. “The spaces within the building have been designed with residents in mind and will cater for a wide range of activities such as yoga and dance classes, community meetings and choir practice.” The building was designed by Melbourne-based Plus Architecture. The demolition took place in 2014 and funding for the new building was approved as part of the city council’s facilities repair and rebuild programme. 99c! Great food Great value!
