An ear for an engine<br />
Sometimes a motor vehicle develops<br />
a problem that is not easy to find even<br />
with the help of diagnostic tools. This is<br />
where experience and an understanding of<br />
engines, comes to the fore.<br />
After forty years in the automotive<br />
business there is not much that Arthur<br />
does not know about motors. He can take<br />
a car for a drive around the block and will<br />
have a fair idea what is wrong with it when<br />
he returns.<br />
Arthur has just recently returned to<br />
manage the garage at Baylis Motors. This<br />
is great news for those living and working<br />
near Sydenham, as well as others who<br />
want the services of a mechanic who<br />
blends the old-fashioned style of mechanic<br />
with modern day techniques, giving him<br />
the expertise to repair motor vehicles from<br />
vintage and classic through to the latest<br />
models.<br />
“Arthur is very good at what he does,”<br />
says Kathy, owner of Baylis Motors. “He<br />
can take a car for a test drive and diagnose<br />
it and it is very rare that he doesn’t hit<br />
the nail on the head straight away. His<br />
knowledge is vast and he has a passion for<br />
working with cars.”<br />
Baylis Motors has a large workshop<br />
with seven hoists and current technology<br />
including one of the latest wheel alignment<br />
machines, of which there are only two in<br />
Christchurch. They are experienced in<br />
carrying out repairs on all eras of motor<br />
vehicles, whether it is the latest model<br />
of car or a very old motor, with a good<br />
number of Japanese and European<br />
vehicles being looked after by the team.<br />
They also take care of the warrants<br />
and repairs for the fleet and employees’<br />
vehicles of a number of small to large<br />
businesses and for a number of car<br />
dealerships nearby.<br />
This business covers the gamut of motor<br />
vehicle repairs and servicing including<br />
warrant of fitnesses and wheel alignments.<br />
With seven staff and four mechanics, they<br />
are able to provide an efficient and fast<br />
turnaround.<br />
You can drop your vehicle off or wait<br />
while you get a warrant with no booking<br />
required and if leaving your vehicle, Kathy<br />
will give you a call when your car is ready.<br />
If needing a tyre they can assist too.<br />
Kathy sources new tyres from a range of<br />
suppliers so you have a choice between an<br />
economic brand, mid-level quality or top<br />
of the line range or even a second hand<br />
tyre if there is one suitable on the floor at<br />
the time.<br />
Baylis Motors is located at 20 Gasson<br />
Street in Sydenham, between Brougham<br />
and Coleridge Street. They are open:<br />
Monday to Friday from 8am until 5pm and<br />
on Saturdays between 8.30am and 1.30pm.<br />
