New Heathcote
Ward city
Templeton talks
about her new
role and what
she plans to
achieve for the community
during her term as a councillor.
ashion
IT IS a real privilege to be elected
to serve the community and this
month new representatives have
been chosen across the city. Thank
you for your trust and belief in us as
we move into these new roles.
Being an elected representative
involves both advocacy for your
ward and decision making on behalf
of residents. This requires members
to listen carefully to the needs and
Gardening
desires of their communities and to
engage with them in an honest and
open way. We are elected for both
our experience and our vision, yet
we need to be open to new ideas and
evidence and to do what is right,
both for now and for future generations.
The new community boards will
deal with local issues and at times
otoring
will have balance competing
views within communities and
make a decision. This is not easy
and not to be taken lightly, as there
could be disappointed residents one
way or another. Meetings are open
to the public and you can also request
speaking rights to let us know
your views on local issues or about
projects you’re involved in.
Councillors wear two hats – one
for local issues and one for citywide,
or metropolitan issues. Balancing
the competing needs and desires
of the city against rates and debt is
one of the core responsibilities of
the city council and I would like to
see more groups and individuals
engaged in this and other decision
making processes. Our meetings
are also open and are live streamed,
so that you can see how and why
decisions are made.
I have maintained a Facebook
page for the last three years to keep
the community up to date with local
issues and the work I have done as
community board chairwoman. The
page is now called ‘Sara Templeton
Councillor for Heathcote’. Please
feel free to follow it and contact me
at any time.
Cashmere Community
sign off for no parking
yellow lines along parts
of Rose St to be installed
to improve visibility
FLAME FILES
• Fire risk management
officer Mark Thomas
THIRTY YEARS ago Guy
Fawkes night caused a holding
of breath by just about every
firefighter in the country.
Inevitably somewhere a
sawmill would end up burning
end to end. Or a town
would be circled in flames as
trees and scrub went up in
flames. Or someone not even
celebrating the night would
find their garage on fire.
The news would report the
the concern, here in the east.
Cashmere . . . come borrow
some of our cones, to indicate
no parking, until you can get
your lives back on track.
Di Alpers – Fairview St
wouldn’t need any ‘no parking
lines’ if the street hadn’t been
tragic loss of an eye by ill-used
skyrocket. Letter boxes were
the target of ‘double-happy’
bombs. For firefighters it
made no sense at all.
Thankfully we’ve come
dumbed down into a slalom of
sorts late last century. It was a
lovely wide street when I first
lived there.
Raewyn Murray – No lines
in New Brighton because
roads are always up!!!!
Peter Wade – It probably
costs $2000 worth of meetings
to get this done, drives me
nuts.
Pamela Neil – It took me
until “the next financial year”
10 months for two double
yellow lines . . . no parking!
Handling fireworks more responsibly
Perfect for
that Summer
Wedding
on a bit since then. The
ban on rockets and bangers
helped. The provision of
public displays has been a
big plus. And perhaps we
should acknowledge that
more recent developments in
health and safety has had an
effect on people’s behaviour.
Whatever the reasons it was
gratifying to see just nine fire
calls overnight on November
5. Grass, scrub, fences and
a couple of bins put down to
fireworks. It’s not perfect. But
it’s encouraging.
