Missing horse mystery a
case of repeat vandalism
• By Caitlin Miles
JADE – the missing play horse
from Charleston Reserve – is
not missing, it was taken away
because of vandalism.
There was initially some
confusion over the missing
horse, which was supposed to be
with its partner, Charlie, in the
Waltham reserve.
Charleston Residents’
Association chairman John
Hoskin said his wife saw it leave
the reserve on the back of a city
council truck and it hasn’t been
seen since.
However, the city council
said the horse was vandalised
on “more than one occasion.”
Because of this, it was taken
out of the reserve after a report
was received stating it had been
damaged again.
City council neighbourhood
and sports parks operation
manager, Al Hardy, said because
the vandals targeted the horse, it
was not replaced.
Mr Hoskin said he hoped
Jade would be returned or
replaced by the city council after
asking the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
Mr Hardy said the horse
wouldn’t be returned, but it
would look at putting something
else in its place.
“Given the history of
vandalism with this particular
piece of equipment, we are
investigating an alternative
piece of equipment for the
horse’s replacement,” Mr Hardy
said.
For now, the remaining horse,
Charlie, will be without its
partner while the city council
looks at other options.
CHANGES: The city council has changed its plan to landscape
Edmonds Park for flood mitigation work.
No go for Edmonds Park path
• By Caitlin Miles
A PATHWAY will not be
installed at Edmonds Park due
to neighbours concerns that
it would be hidden during the
night time.
As part of Bells Creek flood
mitigation work, the park in
Woolston is being developed to
help ease flooding in the area.
The city council’s Land
Drainage Recovery Programme
investigated options for flood
mitigation in Bells Creek and
recommend a package of works
to reduce flooding.
Stage one includes a new detention
pond within the northern
half of Edmonds Park where
the sports fields are currently
located.
By realigning the creek to run
through Edmonds Park, it will
ease flooding in the surrounding
properties. The section of park
planned for the dry channel was
chosen as it is currently not used.
A sealed footpath on the
southern side of the landscape
planting was also planned to
provide access from Aldwins Rd
into the park.
A small wooden footbridge
across the realigned Bells Creek
at the eastern side of the park
would allow pedestrians to
cross from the northern to the
southern side of the creek.
Councillor Yani Johanson said
nearby residents were worried
about safety if the path was not
well lit during the night and
wanted to see it changed.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
had originally signed off on the
landscaping plans but the project
team assigned to the work
had met with nearby residents
and decided not to install the
pathway to ease their concerns.
