Protection planned for cyclists
• By Noah Graham
FLEXIBLE POSTS will be
added along the edge of the
Grove Rd, Addington, cycleway
to prevent people driving onto
it.
City council planning and
delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis said the posts will
be installed in the ‘next few
weeks’ to prevent people from
driving onto it and ensuring
user safety.
Manuka
Cottage manager
Cherylan
Davies (left)
was delighted to
hear city council
were installing
the posts after she was worried
cyclists could be injured.
She said it was only a matter
of time before someone was hurt
on the narrow road as, when
passing each other, cars would
often swerve into available gaps
and that would often be the
cycleway.
“Anything that makes it safer
for pedestrians and cyclists is a
good idea,” she said.
However, Mrs Davies said city
council needed to monitor the
road properly and make sure
IMPEDING: Grove Rd residents will be penalised if they continue to park on berms and pathways
along the road once the cycle way is complete.
people were following the road
rules down the street.
On one side of Grove Rd parking
was removed to install the
cycleway, which is part of the
Little River Link, one of the 13
major cycle routes which aim to
connect the city.
With less parking, a small
number of people have
started parking on the berms
and the cycleway during its
construction, Ms Ellis
said.
“Construction contractors
have reminded residents not to
do this, which has worked in
most cases.
“[City] council will use
enforcement measures if
necessary once the cycleway is
open.”
The cycleway is expected to be
completed in a few weeks.
In Brief
SIGNS PLEASE RESIDENTS
Somerfield residents are delighted
to see the new school speed zones
installed on Studholme and
Somerfield Sts. The 40km/h signs
were installed late last month.
Somerfield Residents Association
chairwoman Julie Tobbell said
she was pleased to see the signs up
making the area safer for children.
SPARKS RD CONSULTATION
Consultation on the Sparks Rd
footpath opened yesterday. City
council is proposing improvements
on 381 Sparks Rd, outside the old
Halswell Library, and the installation
of a zebra pedestrian crossing
over the left turning lane from
Halswell Rd onto Sparks Rd. The
consultation will close on May 29.
COFFEE CART AT QUARRY
A coffee cart has been granted a
spot at the Halswell Quarry, following
a city council idea to get
small businesses to set up in the
space. The city council asked for
expressions on interest in spring
last year and Coffee Vice won a
temporary lease to set up shop
near the Singleman’s House. The
decision to allow a vendor into the
park was made after plans to convert
the Singlemen’s House into a
cafe were turned down. The cart is
currently operating from Tuesday
to Friday, 8.30am-2pm and Saturday
to Sunday, 8.30am-4pm.
