Residents’ safety fears over
Southern motorway extension
• By Emily O’Connell
PEDESTRIANS AND cyclists
could be left at risk under the
current plans for the $195
million Christchurch Southern
Motorway Stage 2 extension, a
residents’ group says.
Halswell Residents’ Association
member Ross McFarlane
said cyclists and pedestrians
would have to cross four lanes of
traffic under the plan.
But New Zealand Transport
Agency principal project manager
Geoff Griffiths said community
consultation for the motorway
started in 2010, and their main
focus had been creating walking
and cycling facilities.
“Our plan is to install a pedestrian
and cyclist refuge in the
middle of the road at the four
lane approach to the proposed
Halswell Junction Rd roundabout.
This will give people a safe
place to stop and wait, and also
means they will only need to
cross two lanes of Halswell Junction
Rd at a time,” Mr Griffiths
said.
But Mr McFarlane did not
believe that was a safe option.
It was a complete oversight
of the needs of pedestrians and
cyclists in the Halswell area, he
said.
“The crossing point proposed
will be at a point where all traffic
coming off the motorway
heading in the direction of
Hornby and all traffic heading to
Halswell will be either exiting or
entering the roundabout. Why
should we be accepting a lower
safety level than already exists
and in an area that will have
much greater traffic volumes?”
Mr McFarlane said.
Halswell residents would also
be left with a longer drive to get
on the motorway, he said.
In response to the residents’
association’s concerns about
the increased travel times, Mr
Griffiths said the time savings
for a large number of people
would far outweigh what would
probably be less than a minute
of extra travel time for Halswell
residents.
John was approached by the local
Asbestos find delays dredging
• By Bridget Rutherford
A PROJECT to dredge the
Woolston Cut has been delayed
until December because asbestos
was found in the silt.
City council land drainage
manager Keith Davison said as
part of the investigative and pricing
study, the results of testing
found asbestos in some samples.
“A specialist company was
then engaged to carry out more
extensive and detailed testing,
which confirmed low levels of
asbestos in some locations and
at different depths within the
sediment, suggesting historic
contamination,” he said.
It was originally hoped the
dredging would begin this
month.
Mr Davison said due to the
contamination, it would now
begin in December, and should
be complete by March.
It was also expected to be
slightly more costly than the
original $2.3 million budget, he
said.
“The removal and disposal of
contaminated silt is more
expensive, but as the majority
is now believed to be uncontaminated
the increase is much
less significant than originally
understood.”
DELAY: Contamination mitigation strategies had to be developed for the Woolston Cut dredging
project because asbestos was found in some of the silt. PHOTO: GILBERT WEALLEANS
The cut was built in the 1980s
to prevent flooding in the lower
Heathcote River area, and for
other catchment-wide improvements,
such as the upper Heathcote
detention basins.
Water from the Heathcote
flows into the cut, which can
then be opened during floods
using the tidal barrage.
dredge the cut so it continued to
provide effective flood remediation.
It was currently about 50
per cent full of silt and liquefaction.
Mr Davison said contamination
mitigation strategies had
been developed to ensure contaminated
silt would be removed
and disposed of safely and at the
right facility.
“The majority of the silt to be
removed is not contaminated
and will be disposed of normally,”
he said.
He said while the source of
asbestos was not clear, it was not
thought to be recent.
“The localised nature of the
contaminated sites might suggest
historic dumping of materials
into the cut.”
St Andrew’s oldest collegian passes away at 102
FLAME FILES
out five kitchen fires which
could have been avoided
I’m often complaining about
cooking fires. I like to think with
good reason as the kitchen is the
most likely room in your house
to have a fire start.
Sometimes this means the
College collegian has passed
away.
Naylor Hillary, 102, was part of
March’s centenary celebration at
the school where he cut the cake.
But it was the beginning of
1929 when Mr Hillary first attended
St Andrew’s. He moved
into the boarding school from
his family home in Opawa.
“I have very pleasant memories
of my time there,” Mr Hillary
told said in March.
In a way it’s like he never left
great-grandson have all received
destruction of a home.
Sometimes even worse when
somebody dies. More often, the
result is someone doubled over
with streaming eyes and hacking
up black mucus from their nose.
And simply because they left the
kitchen while an element on the
stove was operating.
Last week, there were five
such fires. One was on Pine Ave,
said Mr Hillary was a “special
person”. She fondly remembers
the whole school singing happy
birthday to him in 2014 for his
100th birthday.
“We are privileged to have had
some special moments with him
over these last few years,” Mrs
Leighton said.
The Papanui resident was also
one of the last living veterans of
the Royal Air Force’s Tempsford
138 Special Duties Squadron,
which he was a navigator for
during World War 2.
Until 1989, the existence of the
squadron was so classified it had
never been acknowledged.
At the end of last year, Mr
Hillary was awarded the French
New Brighton, where smoke
through the house was the result
of a frying pan overheating. The
smoke was removed by the fire
service’s extractor fans but I
bet the smell is still there today.
Probably for months to come.
On the same night, a similar
incident happened on Hendon
St, Edgeware. A similar result
with smoke being cleared.
CELEBRATION:
Mr Hillary’s daughter Pam
really talk about that time in
Then on Linwood Ave a
cardboard box of goods was
placed on the stove top while
the people went to the shops.
Somehow the element was
knocked on.
They returned to smoke
everywhere and tried to control
it. The result was the doubledover
condition referred to
above.
his life. Mr Hillary read the
paper every morning, took long
walks in the afternoon, attended
church every Sunday without
fail and was a big Richie McCaw
fan.
Frustration as kitchen fires keep flaring up across the city
Overheated food in a
microwave on Barnes Rd,
Redwood, caused familiar smoke
problems, and a smoke alarm
alerted neighbours to pots on
a stove in a locked and empty
house on Mary St, Papanui.
It’s not hard. If you turn on a
stove element, you don’t leave.
Not for a minute.
Easy really.
Your local registered Master Builder
Home building is as much about understanding the
landscape and the client as it is the plan and the
materials. From our office in Rolleston, Canterbury our
small company has built a huge range of homes that are
distinctive, stylish, durable and cost-effective.
From clever, compact homes to three bedroom townhouses
to large scale, expansive country style homes, our work
spans all types of house building.
Since 2004 we have carefully built, among other things, a
reputation for constructing high quality houses.
An artisan is someone who is highly skilled in a particular
expertise, a hands-on craftsman – someone who is
passionate about the quality results they produce.
With decades in the business the team at Artisian Homes
have worked in all areas of residential construction. There
are obvious differences between building a two-bedroom
home compared to a six bedroom one. Irrespective, our
overall approach remains the same.
While we have a sound reputation for carefully crafted
home building we also are renowned for getting the right
result no matter what the challenge. Building with difficult
access, looming timelines or tight budgets is just a fact of
life for us. All our tradespeople are qualified and registered
or licensed. Our abilities to design and build a range of
houses have increased over the years, as has our skill and
overall capacity. While we don’t have the franchises of our
larger competitors we do have their networks and buying
power. Which means our clients receive the most costeffective
results possible.
At Artisan Homes, our passion is building homes for
people who appreciate the work that goes into what will,
ultimately, be a home they love to live in.
Addington: City’s ‘most interesting’ suburb
• By Andrew King
WORKING CLASS families
living in a hub of industrial and
commercial activity – that’s just
one reason why historian John
Wilson says Addington is one
of the city’s most interesting
suburbs.
So, with the help of the
Addington Neighbourhood Association,
he has penned a book
called Local Lives: A History of
Addington, which is available for
a pre-release.
It has been a labour of love
for the former St Albans man,
who spent more than 20 years
interviewing locals, pouring
over records and collating a huge
amount information to put the
368-page book together.
“I have talked to a lot of people,
but have missed a lot as well.
If I was to interview everyone on
the list I would have been dead
for 20 years,” he laughed.
Mr Wilson, who now resides
in Arthur’s Pass, was working for
the city council heritage team in
the 90s when he was approached
by the neighbourhood association
to write the book about the
suburb.
“The Canterbury History
Foundation gave me funding
at a critical point in either 2007
or 2008 as it was looking like I
LOOKING BACK: Historian John Wilson’s book, Local Lives: A History of Addington, features more than 150 photos and
illustrations, including this one with the concrete water tower which was built in 1883.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
couldn’t keep it going,” he said.
Mr Wilson spent nights, weekends
and any spare moments he
had around his regular jobs to
put the book together.
One of the most interesting
pieces in the book, according to
Mr Wilson, was the vicar for St
Mary’s Church, Reverend Walter
Stanley Bean, who was the sonin-law
of the country’s longest
standing prime minister Richard
John Seddon.
“He used to visit Bean quite a
bit and he would get the train to
stop in Addington, something
the locals could not do. They had
to ride it into the city centre,” Mr
Wilson said.
Mr Wilson, who has a PhD in
history from Harvard University,
said it was great the book was
being designed and printed in
Christchurch.
“It has been quite a task for
us to put this out and I’m very
grateful to all of those who have
helped me and the association
make it happen,” he said.
Association treasurer Graham
Robinson said they were excited
to get their hands on the finished
product.
“There hasn’t been a history
book on this area done to date.
We thought it was time we illustrate
the story of the suburb.”
The pre-release price of the
book is $40, until November 15.
Afterwards, it will rise to $50.
A Column of Fire
By Ken Follett
The saga that has enthralled the millions of readers of The Pillars
of the Earth and World Without End now continues with Ken
Follett’s magnificent, gripping A Column of Fire. Christmas 1558,
and young Ned Willard returns home to Kingsbridge to find his
world has changed. The ancient stones...Kingsbridge Cathedral
look down on a city torn by religious hatred. Europe is in turmoil
as high principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty and
love, and Ned soon finds himself on the opposite side from the
girl he longs to marry, Margery Fitzgerald. Then Elizabeth Tudor
becomes queen and all of Europe turns against England. The
shrewd, determined young monarch sets up the country’s first
secret service to give her early warning of assassination plots,
rebellions and invasion plans. The true battle pitches those who
believe in tolerance and compromise against the tyrants who
would impose their ideas on everyone else - no matter the cost.
The Thunderbolt Pony
By Stacy Gregg
A dramatic and emotional story about one girl’s determination to stand
by her beloved animals – and her refusal to give up, even in the face of
impossible odds. When a devastating earthquake hits Evie’s hometown
of Parnassus on New Zealand’s South Island, she and the rest of the
town are forced to evacuate. Evie’s injured mum is one of the first to be
rescued by helicopter and Evie will be next. But when she realises that
she will be forced to leave her beloved pony, Gus, her dog, Jock, and
her cat Moxy behind, she is determined to find another way. Before the
rescue helicopter returns, Evie flees with Gus, Jock and Moxy in a race
against time across difficult terrain to reach the port of Kaikoura, where
she has heard that people will be evacuated by ship in three days’
time. Surely there will be space for her, Gus, Jock and Moxy there?
But the journey is harder than Evie could ever have imagined, and
with aftershocks constantly shaking, Evie will have to draw on all her
bravery, strength, and resilience to bring her and her animals to safety
... and hope that they reach the boat in time.
The Wonderling By Mira Bartok
In this extraordinary debut novel with its deft nod to Dickensian heroes
and rogues, Mira Bartók tells the story of Arthur, a shy, fox-like foundling
with only one ear and a desperate desire to belong, as he seeks his
destiny. Welcome to the Home for Wayward and Misbegotten Creatures,
an institution run by evil Miss Carbunkle, a cunning villainess who
believes her terrified young charges exist only to serve and suffer. Part
animal and part human, the groundlings toil in classroom and factory,
forbidden to enjoy anything regular children have, most particularly
singing and music. For the Wonderling, an innocent-hearted, one-eared,
fox-like eleven-year-old with only a number rather than a proper name -
a 13 etched on a medallion around his neck - it is the only home he has
ever known. But unexpected courage leads him to acquire the loyalty of
a young bird groundling named Trinket, who gives the Home’s loneliest
inhabitant two incredible gifts: a real name - Arthur, like the good king
in the old stories - and a best friend. Using Trinket’s ingenious invention,
the pair escape over the wall and embark on an adventure that will take
them out into the wider world and ultimately down the path of sweet
Arthur’s true destiny.
Quarry planted by volunteers
• By Emily O’Connell
SHOVEL BY shovel load, more
than 160 volunteers helped place
2000 native plants in Halswell
Quarry Park at the weekend.
The annual event is part of an
ongoing partnership between
the community, Trees for
Canterbury and the city council.
Some of the species planted
VOLUNTEERS: More
than 160 volunteers
helped out at the
Halswell Quarry
planting day. Trees
harakeke, mikimiki, karamu, ti
rushes.
Trees for Canterbury projects
co-ordinator Robin Stove said
the highlight was seeing the
community come together.
“It was good actually, we
had a lot of volunteers turn
up so it made for a pretty
quick event,” Mr Stove said.
Volunteers ranged from
Buddha’s Light International
Association, the Association
of Filipino Tradesmen in NZ
Inc, Brotherhood of Guardians
Council New Zealand and the
local Rotary Club. Due to the
high turnout of volunteers, all
planting and spreading of mulch
was completed within hours.
A $200,000 GRANT aims to
preserve an iconic 19th century
building for the future.
The city council grant is for
repair and strengthening of
the privately owned former
pumphouse on Tuam St in
Linwood.
The building is of high historical
significance because it is associated
with the establishment
of the Christchurch Drainage
Board in 1875-76. It was part
of the development of an engineering
solution to address the
problems caused by inadequate
drainage and sewage disposal.
“In the mid 1870s the absence
of an organised sewerage and
rubbish disposal system, coupled
with inadequate drainage, had
become a city-wide problem, and
the death rate from water borne
diseases was high,’’ city council
heritage team leader Brendan
Smyth said.
He said special legislation was
passed to set up the drainage
board, which was then given the
task of planning and building a
drainage and sewerage network
for the city and the suburbs.
“The pumphouse was a key
part of that network and is one
of the few visible above ground
components left of that 19th
HISTORIC: The city council
approved a $200,000
grant to restore the former
The owners of the building
plan to repair earthquake damage
and strengthen it.
“But that work is likely to cost
about $1.5 million and they have
no insurance pay-out to help
with those costs,’’ Mr Smyth
said.
They have also been given a
$200,000 grant from the Government
Cashmere trio hope to net illusive title
SPORTS
• By Andrew King
CASHMERE High basketballers
Connor McLaughlin, Mitch
Mahon and Ruben Stanley have
one last opportunity to bring
a national title home for their
school.
The year 13 trio will finish
their studies at the end of the
year after playing more than
350 games between them in the
school’s top team and having
played with each other since
year 7.
But before they do, they want
to come back from Palmerston
North with the AA National
Championship, an accolade they
have never won. Last year they
placed 20th.
Before the tournament, Stanley
had played 119 games, Mahon
121 and McLaughlin 126 since
their inclusion in 2014.
Said Stanley: “We want to leave
something behind and it would
be great if it was a national title.”
Mahon, who captains the side,
said it felt like “the end of an
era” but they are pretty excited
to have a crack at winning the
national championship.
McLaughlin said it was definitely
a step up from the South
Island champs.
“It is faster and more athletic.
Everything is harder I guess.
EXPERIENCE: Mitch Mahon (left), Ruben Stanley and Connor McLaughlin played more than 350
games for the top Cashmere team.
PHOTO: GORDON FINDLATER
There are more games over a
quicker period of time,” he said.
They are in pool B which
includes host school Palmerston
North Boys’ High, Wellington
College, New Plymouth Boys’
High, Kelston Boys’ High and
fierce local rivals Christ’s College.
“Cashmere, Christ’s has been a
big rivalry. We beat them for the
Thompson Trophy this year and
[then] they beat us at the South
Islands, the difference is we
build teams and they buy them,”
Stanley said.
“It is the biggest game,”
McLaughlin said.
The team culture has changed
since they first entered the locker
room as young players.
“It was very different,” Stanley
said. “The team culture wasn’t
great, there were a lot of senior
cards being played.”
Said Mahon: “Now everyone
is on the same page, we are all
equals.”
Basketball is a big part of the
Rose St school. The boys feel
•Connor McLaughlin: 17,
182cm, point-guard, 126
games.
•Mitch Mahon: 18,
188cm, power-forward,
121 games.
•Ruben Stanley: 18,
195cm, small-forward,
119 games.
the pressure from within to do
well at nationals, but outside the
school gate, it is a different story.
“Outside we are known as the
underdog, so that takes some
pressure off. It helps us play with
a bit of chip on our shoulder,”
Stanley said.
Coach Ben Sheat, who is also
moving on from the school after
10 years coaching and four years
as a PE teacher, said they have
been very positive role models
for the younger players.
They [McLaughlin, Mahon
and Stanley] have been tough
on them in a positive way. It has
been pretty awesome and helped
build the culture we have now,”
Sheat said.
Cashmere started the tournament
off yesterday with a 79-68
loss against rivals Christ’s in
their opening game. Today they
take on Wellington at 4pm,
tomorrow they play Kelston at
9am and New Plymouth at 4pm,
before the knockout stages on
Thursday.
Young footballer takes out top striker award
• By Andrew King
CASHMERE HIGH’S Lyle
Matthysen scored two accolades
at the Mainland Football awards.
The 19-year-old was crowned
top striker and youth player at
the awards held Sixty6 on Peterborough
on September 22.
It was the second time the
South African-born Matthysen
has won the youth award, putting
a cherry on top of a great season
for Cashmere High’s first XI and
Cashmere Technical.
“Winning the striker of the
year was an unbelievable moment
in my career. Only being 19
years-old and winning the striker
of the year is great,” he said.
He was also named Cashmere
Tech’s youth player of the year for
the second year in a row, players’
player of the year and support
player of the year at the club’s
awards on September 23.
He recently signed with
Tasman United, instead of
Canterbury United, in an effort
to get more top-level game time.
‘Winning the striker
of the year was an
unbelievable moment in
my career’
– Lyle Matthysen
However, a knee injury has kept
him off the pitch until last week.
He flew to Nelson on Thursday
to start training with the side.
“I wouldn’t have been able to
achieve all this without the help
of my parents,” he said.
“They have given everything
this year and have motivated me
to do well each game. Also to my
teammates and coaching staff, I
can’t thank them enough for everything
they’ve done,” he said.
GREAT food
BROUGHT TO YOU BY...
Your fresh food people
KUMARA, ORANGE AND
PISTACHIO CAKE
Ingredients
1-2 Orange Kumara, medium
size
1 cup Pistachio nuts, shelled
1¼ cups Sugar
4 Eggs
2 tsp Oranges, rind
¼ cup Flour
1 tsp Ground cardamom
Orange drizzle
CARAMELISED ASPARAGUS
AND BACON
Ingredients
16 Asparagus spears
4 rashers Streaky bacon, smoked
2 Tbsp Olive oil
2 Tbsp Maple syrup
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp Sesame seeds
Directions
Preheat the oven to 190 deg C.
Line a large roasting pan with
baking paper.
Place a wire rack on top.
Snap the tough ends off the
asparagus. Cut the stalks to
measure about 15cm.
If the bacon is thick, run the
blunt edge of a heavy knife along
the bacon to ‘stretch’ it. Take four
spears of asparagus and wrap
the bacon around the bunch.
Place on the rack, bacon ends
down. Repeat with the remaining
asparagus and bacon.
Combine the oil, syrup and
sauce. Brush thoroughly over the
asparagus and bacon.
Bake for 15-20min, until the
bacon is cooked.
½ cup Sugar
¾ cup Orange juice
1 Tbsp Orange marmalade
Directions
Peel kumara and cut into evensized
pieces. Cook in boiling
water for 15min or until tender.
Drain well.
Place saucepan back on the
warm element for 2min to
remove any excess moisture
from kumara.
Push kumara through a coarse
sieve into a bowl. Chop pistachio
nuts finely. Add to kumara with
orange rind.
Separate eggs and beat yolks
with 1/2 cup of measured sugar.
Sift flour and cardamom over
kumara and fold in egg yolk
mixture.
Beat egg whites with
remaining sugar until thick
and glossy. Fold into kumara
mixture.
Line the base of a 20cm cake
tin with baking paper, then pour
over mixture.
Bake at 180 deg C for 45min.
Stand for 15min before cutting.
Cut and serve with orange
drizzle.
Orange drizzle
Place orange juice, sugar and
marmalade in a small saucepan.
Simmer until golden.
HOME & HEATING
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide
what is best? Choosing the right sized heat
pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort
levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore
important to get professional advice from heat
pump experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
Contra dance is similar to barn
dancing – a caller will teach a
repeating pattern and prompt
you through it. Entry costs
between $5 and $10.
Opawa Farmers’ Market
Find some organic and
delicious produce from local
growers. Enjoy sipping on a
coffee while wandering around
the market.
275 Fifield Tce, Opawa
Choosing the right heat
pump for your home
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands
vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of
systems and price, so it depends on your
application as to which will be most suitable.
Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu,
Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are
all reliable brands backed up by good technical
after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but
also validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no
obligation quote and will come to your home
Miracle weight loss fruit
An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit
called Garcinia Cambogia from India &
Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight
management & overall health. In fact many
have found it to increase fat loss by 2 to 3
times greater than normal. T.V. Dr. Oz has
said it is the most effective & fastest working
natural supplement to support weight loss.
Even without exercise & diet changes
many have found it beneficial, although even
better & quicker results are often obtained
with extra exercise & an improved diet.
The extract of this amazing fruit is called
Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax.
Research has shown HCA to help suppress
the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for
improve cholesterol levels
that may help reduce
& cardiovascular
disease, help prevent
sugar spikes as well
as other health
benefits.
It is considered
supplement
(although check first
if you are on medication)
as it has been used for centuries
as a flavouring agent & digestive aid.
Need more vitality?
The nutrient balance of the body is critical
for optimum aging. Research has shown
the body performs much better if all the
required nutrients are available in sufficient
quantities. The problem is it is very hard
to obtain enough if any of some of these
nutrients from a normal diet. Boron is one
of the many nutrients with amazing benefits
that is lacking in our diet. A 2014 double
87.5% saying they had less or no stiffness
hormones in both men and woman and can
increase fertility. It helps promote healthy
muscle mass, fights diabetes, strengthens
the bones and increases concentration and
brain function.
Pure Vitality are based on the West Coast
They do this by supporting the better
function of many body systems including
the immune, brain, adrenals, pancreas and
cardiovascular. Improved energy, stamina,
mood and the feeling of wellbeing as well
as general health improvement are often
Take a trip with
Third Aged Tours
Taking people aged over 50 on trips
around New Zealand and the world for
nearly 20 years has earned Third Age Tours
a brag book that Director Brenda Corby-
Yarrall says “businesses would give their
eye teeth for.’’
“Taking small groups of 10 – 24 people
means I can operate the tour in a relaxed,
companionable manner. We have an
absolute blast when we’re away. It’s all about
having fun”.
“Most of my trips are run annually
because they’re so
popular, but I’m always
adding new destinations
- like “Sicily, South Italy
& Vatican” + “Cuba”, as
people ask for them.’’
Brenda checks out
all accommodation
before booking it, and
ensures the party spends
at least a few nights at
each place. “That way
you don’t feel like you’re
living out of a suitcase.’’
Many clients now have
made over 20 tours with
us, one has completed a
whopping 27 tours.
“My clients tell me
they keep coming back
because of the size of the groups and our
relaxed manner. My motto is ‘There are no
strangers, only friends waiting to meet.’
We gather together for breakfast at
8.30am which sets us up for the day and
everybody thinks is a very civilised hour.’’
Get your legs looking sweet
for summer!
Though generally harmless, spider veins
can cause some to want to cover their legs
up, even in the heat. Treating spider veins
is rarely a medical necessity, but for those
who want treatment for cosmetic reasons,
spider vein-free skin is just a zap away.
No one knows why some people
develop spider veins and others don’t,
but genetics, the hormone estrogen and
possibly the hormone progesterone
are thought to play a role. Spider veins
appear more frequently in women than
in men, and are particularly common in
pregnant women and those taking oral
contraceptives or hormone-replacement
therapy.
Getting rid of spider veins is safe and
easy. Sclerotherapy, the gold-standard
treatment for larger spider veins, involves
injecting a saline solution or detergent
into the veins, causing them to clump
together or clot and become less apparent.
“Anybody who has veins they don’t like
is a good candidate (for sclerotherapy)
because it’s an incredibly safe, easy
procedure,” says Dr. Heather Jefferies, of
Koru Clinic in Cashmere.
In some cases, several injections are
required. The procedure feels like a tiny
needle stick, and most people usually get
through it with little difficulty. Dr Jefferies
particularly recommends treatment for
people with a family history of problem
veins who are showing signs relatively
early - for example, those who have
multiple patches of spider veins by their
early 20s.
There is a strong chance - up to 90
percent - of greatly improved appearance
after sclerotherapy, and results last for two
years on average. After that, genetics or
whatever other factors caused the veins
to appear in the first place tend to take
over, and maintenance treatment may be
required to keep the skin vein-free.
Laser treatment can also eliminate
spider veins, particularly the smaller veins
that are too small for sclerotherapy.
Dr Jefferies often uses a combination of
sclerotherapy and lasers: sclerotherapy for
the “Your larger face veins is and unique. a laser to get rid of the
Nestled into a private setting on the lower
slopes of Cashmere, this four-bedroom
family home is just finished and available
now. With solid wood everywhere in white
and pale natural tones, the fresh décor has
a modern Scandinavian look that combines
with the setting to make this special
property, one of a kind.
The living, dining and kitchen areas are
open plan with polished wood floors and
ranch sliders to a private and sunny wrap
around deck. Newly planted gardens gently
slope up from the deck and in this sheltered
microclimate are bound to quickly get
established. The living area also has direct
access to a smaller deck on the other side of
the house providing great indoor/outdoor
flow and a spot in the sun from morning
to evening.
The stylish kitchen is beautifully designed
with modern white joinery and light oak
feature accents. Stone bench tops, an underbench
oven and an induction hob all make
this a statement kitchen built to last. Raised
ceilings in most rooms add an extra feeling
of light and space and a heat pump in the
living area ensures year round economical
comfort.
There are four double bedrooms one with
ensuite. The main bathroom has a full sized
bath and large vanity, there is a separate
shower room and a separate toilet, all
ensuring that the morning bathroom rush
is as easy as it possibly could be. A double
garage with internal access and good
off street parking complete this unique
property.
