Residents’ safety fears over 

Southern motorway extension

could be left at risk under the 

current plans for the $195 

million Christchurch Southern 

Motorway Stage 2 extension, a 

residents’ group says. 

Halswell Residents’ Association 

member Ross McFarlane 

said cyclists and pedestrians 

would have to cross four lanes of 

traffic under the plan. 

But New Zealand Transport 

Agency principal project manager 

Geoff Griffiths said community 

consultation for the motorway 

started in 2010, and their main 

focus had been creating walking 

and cycling facilities. 

“Our plan is to install a pedestrian 

and cyclist refuge in the 

middle of the road at the four 

lane approach to the proposed 

Halswell Junction Rd roundabout. 

This will give people a safe 

place to stop and wait, and also 

means they will only need to 

cross two lanes of Halswell Junction 

Rd at a time,” Mr Griffiths 

said. 

But Mr McFarlane did not 

believe that was a safe option. 

It was a complete oversight 

of the needs of pedestrians and 

cyclists in the Halswell area, he 

said. 

“The crossing point proposed 

will be at a point where all traffic 

coming off the motorway 

heading in the direction of

entering the roundabout. Why 

should we be accepting a lower 

safety level than already exists 

and in an area that will have 

much greater traffic volumes?” 

Mr McFarlane said. 

Halswell residents would also 

be left with a longer drive to get 

on the motorway, he said. 

In response to the residents’ 

association’s concerns about 

the increased travel times, Mr 

Griffiths said the time savings 

for a large number of people 

would far outweigh what would 

probably be less than a minute 

of extra travel time for Halswell 

residents.

fruition for historian John Wilson 

with the release of his book Local 

Lives A History of Addington (see 

page 5). 

John was approached by the local 

residents’ association in the 1990s 

to write the book. 

He was working for the city 

council’s heritage team at the time 

so he knows his history. 

John wrote the book in his spare 

time interviewing many local people 

and collating a huge amount 

of information and photos for the 

368-page publication which will be 

released on November 15. 

He says Addington is one of the 

city’s most fascinating suburbs. 

An interesting part of the book 

is how Prime Minister Richard 

Seddon would stop the train in 

Addington to visit his son-in-law, 

St Mary’s Church vicar Walter 

Bean.

Asbestos find delays dredging

A PROJECT to dredge the 

Woolston Cut has been delayed 

until December because asbestos 

was found in the silt. 

City council land drainage 

manager Keith Davison said as 

part of the investigative and pricing 

study, the results of testing 

found asbestos in some samples. 

“A specialist company was 

then engaged to carry out more 

extensive and detailed testing, 

which confirmed low levels of 

asbestos in some locations and 

at different depths within the 

sediment, suggesting historic 

contamination,” he said. 

It was originally hoped the 

dredging would begin this 

month. 

Mr Davison said due to the 

contamination, it would now 

begin in December, and should 

be complete by March. 

It was also expected to be 

slightly more costly than the 

original $2.3 million budget, he 

said. 

“The removal and disposal of 

contaminated silt is more 

expensive, but as the majority 

is now believed to be uncontaminated 

the increase is much 

less significant than originally 

understood.”

The cut was built in the 1980s 

to prevent flooding in the lower 

Heathcote River area, and for 

other catchment-wide improvements, 

such as the upper Heathcote 

detention basins.

It was currently about 50 

per cent full of silt and liquefaction. 

Mr Davison said contamination 

mitigation strategies had 

been developed to ensure contaminated 

silt would be removed 

and disposed of safely and at the 

right facility.

He said while the source of 

asbestos was not clear, it was not

THE OLDEST St Andrew’s 

College collegian has passed 

away. 

Naylor Hillary, 102, was part of 

March’s centenary celebration at 

the school where he cut the cake. 

But it was the beginning of 

1929 when Mr Hillary first attended 

St Andrew’s. He moved 

into the boarding school from 

his family home in Opawa. 

“I have very pleasant memories 

of my time there,” Mr Hillary 

told said in March. 

In a way it’s like he never left 

– his son, grandsons and now 

great-grandson have all received 

a STAC education.

birthday to him in 2014 for his 

100th birthday. 

“We are privileged to have had 

some special moments with him 

over these last few years,” Mrs 

Leighton said. 

The Papanui resident was also 

one of the last living veterans of 

the Royal Air Force’s Tempsford 

138 Special Duties Squadron, 

which he was a navigator for 

during World War 2. 

Until 1989, the existence of the 

squadron was so classified it had 

never been acknowledged. 

At the end of last year, Mr 

Hillary was awarded the French 

New Brighton, where smoke 

through the house was the result 

of a frying pan overheating. The 

smoke was removed by the fire 

service’s extractor fans but I 

bet the smell is still there today. 

Probably for months to come. 

On the same night, a similar 

incident happened on Hendon 

St, Edgeware. A similar result 

with smoke being cleared.

Addington: City’s ‘most interesting’ suburb

WORKING CLASS families 

living in a hub of industrial and 

commercial activity – that’s just 

one reason why historian John 

Wilson says Addington is one 

of the city’s most interesting 

suburbs. 

So, with the help of the 

Addington Neighbourhood Association, 

he has penned a book 

called Local Lives: A History of 

Addington, which is available for 

a pre-release. 

It has been a labour of love 

for the former St Albans man, 

who spent more than 20 years 

interviewing locals, pouring 

over records and collating a huge 

amount information to put the 

368-page book together. 

“I have talked to a lot of people, 

but have missed a lot as well. 

If I was to interview everyone on 

the list I would have been dead 

for 20 years,” he laughed. 

Mr Wilson, who now resides 

in Arthur’s Pass, was working for 

the city council heritage team in 

the 90s when he was approached 

by the neighbourhood association 

to write the book about the 

suburb. 

“The Canterbury History 

Foundation gave me funding 

at a critical point in either 2007 

or 2008 as it was looking like I

couldn’t keep it going,” he said. 

Mr Wilson spent nights, weekends 

and any spare moments he 

had around his regular jobs to 

put the book together. 

One of the most interesting 

pieces in the book, according to 

Mr Wilson, was the vicar for St 

Mary’s Church, Reverend Walter 

Stanley Bean, who was the sonin-law 

of the country’s longest 

standing prime minister Richard 

John Seddon. 

“He used to visit Bean quite a 

bit and he would get the train to 

stop in Addington, something 

the locals could not do. They had 

to ride it into the city centre,” Mr 

Wilson said. 

Mr Wilson, who has a PhD in 

history from Harvard University, 

said it was great the book was 

being designed and printed in 

Christchurch. 

“It has been quite a task for 

us to put this out and I’m very 

grateful to all of those who have 

helped me and the association 

make it happen,” he said. 

Association treasurer Graham 

Robinson said they were excited 

to get their hands on the finished 

product. 

“There hasn’t been a history 

book on this area done to date. 

We thought it was time we illustrate 

the story of the suburb.” 

The pre-release price of the 

book is $40, until November 15. 

Afterwards, it will rise to $50.

co-ordinator Robin Stove said 

the highlight was seeing the 

community come together. 

“It was good actually, we 

had a lot of volunteers turn 

up so it made for a pretty 

quick event,” Mr Stove said. 

Volunteers ranged from 

Buddha’s Light International 

Association, the Association 

of Filipino Tradesmen in NZ 

Inc, Brotherhood of Guardians 

Council New Zealand and the 

local Rotary Club. Due to the 

high turnout of volunteers, all 

planting and spreading of mulch 

was completed within hours. 

A $200,000 GRANT aims to 

preserve an iconic 19th century 

building for the future. 

The city council grant is for 

repair and strengthening of 

the privately owned former 

pumphouse on Tuam St in 

Linwood. 

The building is of high historical 

significance because it is associated 

with the establishment 

of the Christchurch Drainage 

Board in 1875-76. It was part 

of the development of an engineering 

solution to address the 

problems caused by inadequate 

drainage and sewage disposal. 

“In the mid 1870s the absence 

of an organised sewerage and 

rubbish disposal system, coupled 

with inadequate drainage, had 

become a city-wide problem, and 

the death rate from water borne 

diseases was high,’’ city council 

heritage team leader Brendan 

Smyth said. 

He said special legislation was 

passed to set up the drainage 

board, which was then given the 

task of planning and building a 

drainage and sewerage network 

for the city and the suburbs. 

“The pumphouse was a key 

part of that network and is one 

of the few visible above ground 

components left of that 19th

Cashmere trio hope to net illusive title

Mahon and Ruben Stanley have 

one last opportunity to bring 

a national title home for their 

school. 

The year 13 trio will finish 

their studies at the end of the 

year after playing more than 

350 games between them in the 

school’s top team and having 

played with each other since 

year 7. 

But before they do, they want 

to come back from Palmerston 

North with the AA National 

Championship, an accolade they 

have never won. Last year they 

placed 20th. 

Before the tournament, Stanley 

had played 119 games, Mahon 

121 and McLaughlin 126 since 

their inclusion in 2014. 

Said Stanley: “We want to leave 

something behind and it would 

be great if it was a national title.” 

Mahon, who captains the side, 

said it felt like “the end of an 

era” but they are pretty excited 

to have a crack at winning the 

national championship. 

McLaughlin said it was definitely 

a step up from the South 

Island champs. 

“It is faster and more athletic. 

Everything is harder I guess.

They are in pool B which 

includes host school Palmerston 

North Boys’ High, Wellington 

College, New Plymouth Boys’ 

High, Kelston Boys’ High and 

fierce local rivals Christ’s College. 

“Cashmere, Christ’s has been a 

big rivalry. We beat them for the 

Thompson Trophy this year and 

[then] they beat us at the South 

Islands, the difference is we 

build teams and they buy them,” 

Stanley said. 

“It is the biggest game,” 

McLaughlin said. 

The team culture has changed 

since they first entered the locker 

room as young players. 

“It was very different,” Stanley 

said. “The team culture wasn’t 

great, there were a lot of senior 

cards being played.” 

Said Mahon: “Now everyone 

is on the same page, we are all 

equals.”

well at nationals, but outside the 

school gate, it is a different story. 

“Outside we are known as the 

underdog, so that takes some 

pressure off. It helps us play with 

a bit of chip on our shoulder,” 

Stanley said. 

Coach Ben Sheat, who is also 

moving on from the school after 

10 years coaching and four years 

as a PE teacher, said they have 

been very positive role models 

for the younger players. 

They [McLaughlin, Mahon 

and Stanley] have been tough 

on them in a positive way. It has 

been pretty awesome and helped 

build the culture we have now,” 

Sheat said. 

Cashmere started the tournament 

off yesterday with a 79-68 

loss against rivals Christ’s in 

their opening game. Today they 

take on Wellington at 4pm, 

tomorrow they play Kelston at 

9am and New Plymouth at 4pm, 

before the knockout stages on 

Thursday.

CASHMERE HIGH’S Lyle 

Matthysen scored two accolades 

at the Mainland Football awards. 

The 19-year-old was crowned 

top striker and youth player at 

the awards held Sixty6 on Peterborough 

on September 22. 

It was the second time the 

South African-born Matthysen 

has won the youth award, putting 

a cherry on top of a great season 

for Cashmere High’s first XI and 

Cashmere Technical. 

“Winning the striker of the 

year was an unbelievable moment 

in my career. Only being 19 

years-old and winning the striker 

of the year is great,” he said. 

He was also named Cashmere 

Tech’s youth player of the year for 

the second year in a row, players’ 

player of the year and support 

player of the year at the club’s 

awards on September 23. 

He recently signed with 

Tasman United, instead of 

Canterbury United, in an effort 

to get more top-level game time.

However, a knee injury has kept 

him off the pitch until last week. 

He flew to Nelson on Thursday 

to start training with the side. 

“I wouldn’t have been able to 

achieve all this without the help

this year and have motivated me 

to do well each game. Also to my 

teammates and coaching staff, I 

can’t thank them enough for everything 

they’ve done,” he said.

PISTACHIO CAKE 

Ingredients 

1-2 Orange Kumara, medium 

size 

1 cup Pistachio nuts, shelled 

1¼ cups Sugar 

4 Eggs 

2 tsp Oranges, rind 

¼ cup Flour 

1 tsp Ground cardamom 

Orange drizzle 

CARAMELISED ASPARAGUS 

AND BACON 

Ingredients 

16 Asparagus spears 

4 rashers Streaky bacon, smoked 

2 Tbsp Olive oil 

2 Tbsp Maple syrup 

1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 

1 Tbsp Sesame seeds 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. 

Line a large roasting pan with 

baking paper. 

Place a wire rack on top. 

Snap the tough ends off the 

asparagus. Cut the stalks to 

measure about 15cm. 

If the bacon is thick, run the 

blunt edge of a heavy knife along 

the bacon to ‘stretch’ it. Take four 

spears of asparagus and wrap 

the bacon around the bunch. 

Place on the rack, bacon ends 

down. Repeat with the remaining 

asparagus and bacon. 

Combine the oil, syrup and 

sauce. Brush thoroughly over the 

asparagus and bacon. 

Bake for 15-20min, until the 

bacon is cooked. 

½ cup Sugar 

¾ cup Orange juice 

1 Tbsp Orange marmalade 

Directions 

Peel kumara and cut into evensized 

pieces. Cook in boiling 

water for 15min or until tender. 

Drain well. 

Place saucepan back on the 

warm element for 2min to 

remove any excess moisture 

from kumara. 

Push kumara through a coarse 

sieve into a bowl. Chop pistachio 

nuts finely. Add to kumara with 

orange rind. 

Separate eggs and beat yolks 

with 1/2 cup of measured sugar. 

Sift flour and cardamom over 

kumara and fold in egg yolk 

mixture. 

Beat egg whites with 

remaining sugar until thick 

and glossy. Fold into kumara 

mixture. 

Line the base of a 20cm cake 

tin with baking paper, then pour 

over mixture. 

Bake at 180 deg C for 45min. 

Stand for 15min before cutting. 

Cut and serve with orange 

drizzle.

Place orange juice, sugar and 

marmalade in a small saucepan. 

Simmer until golden.

for summer! 

Though generally harmless, spider veins 

can cause some to want to cover their legs 

up, even in the heat. Treating spider veins 

is rarely a medical necessity, but for those 

who want treatment for cosmetic reasons, 

spider vein-free skin is just a zap away. 

No one knows why some people 

develop spider veins and others don’t, 

but genetics, the hormone estrogen and 

possibly the hormone progesterone 

are thought to play a role. Spider veins 

appear more frequently in women than 

in men, and are particularly common in 

pregnant women and those taking oral 

contraceptives or hormone-replacement 

therapy. 

Getting rid of spider veins is safe and 

easy. Sclerotherapy, the gold-standard 

treatment for larger spider veins, involves 

injecting a saline solution or detergent 

into the veins, causing them to clump 

together or clot and become less apparent. 

“Anybody who has veins they don’t like 

is a good candidate (for sclerotherapy) 

because it’s an incredibly safe, easy 

procedure,” says Dr. Heather Jefferies, of 

Koru Clinic in Cashmere. 

In some cases, several injections are 

required. The procedure feels like a tiny 

needle stick, and most people usually get 

through it with little difficulty. Dr Jefferies 

particularly recommends treatment for 

people with a family history of problem 

veins who are showing signs relatively 

early - for example, those who have 

multiple patches of spider veins by their 

early 20s. 

There is a strong chance - up to 90 

percent - of greatly improved appearance 

after sclerotherapy, and results last for two 

years on average. After that, genetics or 

whatever other factors caused the veins 

to appear in the first place tend to take 

over, and maintenance treatment may be 

required to keep the skin vein-free. 

Laser treatment can also eliminate 

spider veins, particularly the smaller veins 

that are too small for sclerotherapy.
