Drama group to premiere
romantic Aussie musical
• By Emily O’Connell
THE HALSWELL Drama Group
will be the first in the country to
premiere an Australian musical
written by the brother of a
Wiggle.
It will be taking the stage with
Who Loves Me? in August.
The musical is written by
Australian singer and songwriter
John Field.
Halswell Drama Group vicepresident
Tim Gunther said
they’re “really excited” to perform
the musical.
He said Mr Field’s brother,
Anthony Field, co-founded The
Wiggles.
Mr Field helped his brother
write some of the music for the
popular children’s show.
Mr Gunther said the Field family
are well known in Australia as
successful musicians, writers and
actors.
Who Loves Me? follows the
story of Enzo Bellini, proprietor of
Bellini’s Cafe, whose one last wish
is to see his heartbroken daughter
Sophia Bellini happy again.
Sophia finds herself on a giant
billboard across from the cafe put
up by her father, proclaiming her
“the jewel of the city” and inviting
interested suitors to call into
Bellini’s Cafe.
Not long after, a second new
billboard appears with a mysterious
inscription – but who was
responsible for it?
Mr Gunther said they’re planning
on doing six shows, with the
opening night being on August 17.
He said there’s additional pressure
for the cast, with Mr Field
planning to travel across the Tasman
for the opening night.
Mr Gunther said cast auditions
will be in March and he would
like to “encourage people to put
themselves out there.”
VANDALS HAVE damaged
a new $20,000 plastic roof at
the Bromley School swimming
pool.
They cut a hole big
enough for a person
to climb through last
Saturday.
Contractor Darren
King had recently finished
putting on the new
roof.
“It’s never going to
look nice for another
eight years (when it will be
replaced),“ Mr King said.
“It’s like cutting a hole in a
tent – you can patch it but it will
never look the same.”
The roof is made from greenhouse
plastic and shade-cloth
and measures 16m x 30m.
“We’d have to strip it all back
and replace the lot,” Mr King
said.
Principal Scot Kinley said it
was “very disappointing” for
the pupils.
As well as the damaged roof,
the vandals attacked the pool
enclosure.
CHRISTMAS arrived early in
Hoon Hay.
The Hoon Hay Community
Assocation hosted a Christmas
party for residents on Friday.
Families took along
their own picnic dinner and
joined in with Christmas
carols.
Music was provided by Brian
Roper who sang and played
guitar, while carols were led by
Daniel Caigou.
Brianna Sauer and Naomi
Thomson, both 8, sang Feliz
Navidad in English and
Maori to open the carol
singing.
The association, which began
Scot Kinley
They broke the toilet cisterns,
poured liquid soap from the
dispensers into the pool and
threw in chairs and other items.
The pool had to be
completely drained
and cleaned and fresh
chemicals were added,
which Mr Kinley said
was very frustrating
given the city has been
close to imposing water
restrictions.
Mr King went to the
school to repair the
damage on Thursday.
He said it would cost between
$400 to $500 to fix, but his
company Tunnel House Tech
would do the work free of
charge.
“It’s about the kids in that
school . . . those kids wouldn’t
have any other means of
learning to swim.”
Roll growth has prompted
the Ministry of Education
to implement a zone around
Bromley and several other
schools in the city’s east this
year.
