New skate park site approved

HALSWELL MAY now get two 

skate parks – one in Halswell 

Domain and the other in 

Knights Stream Sports Park. 

The Riccarton-Wigram 

Community Board decided at 

an extraordinary meeting last 

Wednesday to give the green 

light for a skate park in Halswell 

Domain, and recommend that a 

smaller one be sited at Knights 

Stream Sports Park. 

About 600 people signed a 

petition to try and stop the skate 

park. But another petition saw 

almost 800 people sign in support 

of the skate park. 

Community board chairman 

Mike Mora said: “We had to 

make a decision and it is the 

young people we have got to 

think about because adults tend 

to think about themselves as 

far as city council facilities are 

concerned.” 

The skate park in Halswell 

Domain will be next to the playground. 

Mr Mora said the community 

board had not received any 

“flak” for recommending a skate 

park in Knights Stream Sports 

Park. 

“I think it will be an advantage 

for families to have a facility so 

close,” he said. 

Twelve deputations were made 

at the meeting from community 

members, including children 

from Halswell schools, residents 

and youth workers. 

Community board member 

Jimmy Chen said while the 

process was open and transparent, 

he was disappointed where 

the skate park was being sited in 

Halswell Domain. 

He lost an amendment proposal 

to seek an alternative location 

in the Halswell Domain. 

He said the decision ignored 

the voices of the Halswell Domain 

Action Group and those in 

support of a skate park in an alternative 

location in the Halswell 

Domain. 

A further petition opposing 

the placement of a skate park in 

Westlake Reserve was signed by 

204 residents. Halswell Community 

Project spokeswoman Chrys 

Horn said the Halswell Domain 

location was the best outcome.

Fire Services were called to Avonhead 

after a mattress was set on fire at a 

party last Friday. A spokesman said 

it was initially a rubbish fire before 

the mattress was thrown on top. One 

appliance was sent from Harewood Fire 

Station. The fire lasted 24min. 

DOOR-KNOCKERS COMING 

TO HALSWELL 

Christchurch Community Response 

door-knockers are coming to Halswell 

and are looking for volunteers. It is 

a community initiative that aims to 

distribute information about Halswell 

to newcomers, identify people who 

may need some support and check that 

people are okay. Anyone interested 

in volunteering will be partnered up 

with an experienced door-knocker

BUDDIST TEMPLE REOPENING 

The Fo Guang Shan buddhist temple, 

art gallery and Water Drop Cafe will be 

opening today at 9.30am. The temple, 

art gallery and cafe were closed for 

more than four years for earthquake

Riccarton. To celebrate the re-opening 

the temple will be exhibiting “One 

Stoke Calligraphy” by Venerable Master 

Hsing Yun. Master Yun was the founder

I BELIEVE that positive change 

can happen when individuals, 

families and communities are

In my current position 

as co-ordinator of 

the HIPPY programme, 

I have seen what an 

empowered community 

of parents from a variety 

of cultures throughout the 

Halswell, Addington, Spreydon 

and Hoon Hay areas can achieve. 

HIPPY is a home-based programme 

that empowers parents 

to become actively involved 

in their three to five-year-old 

children’s learning. Parents and 

children work together for 15min 

a day with story books, puzzles, 

and learning games. 

Research following families 

who have been on the programme 

is revealing multiple 

benefits; children who are ready 

to learn and settle at school, who 

score better on measures of literacy 

and numeracy and parents 

who are more involved in school 

activities and often seek further

Spate of blazes keeps 

firefighters busy

THERE HAVE been a number of 

quite serious fires in the city this 

week. And this column is being 

written, hurriedly, before I head 

off to one of them. 

The deliberate fire set in the 

empty building on Hereford St 

last Friday was another example 

of our firefighters being put in 

danger by the reckless and criminal 

actions of some idiot. 

The fire was on an upper floor 

and the only way to get to it was 

from inside. 

This meant climbing stairwells 

with charged fire hoses in a 

building with structural safety 

issues that was already compromised 

by earthquake damage 

even before the fire damage 

occurred. 

In this case, the fire crews did a 

brilliant job in restricting the fire 

to the floor of origin. 

It’s just that they should never 

have had to. 

Last Saturday, we had an incident 

where a young woman was 

burnt trying to encourage a fire 

in a drum at a property in Hoon 

Hay that was dying down by 

throwing petrol on to it. 

These type of incidents are 

actually not all that rare. 

Even in winter, petrol products 

freed into the air invisibly 

vaporise, leaving a surrounding 

mixture of highly-flammable gas 

that is many times larger than a 

pool or splash of fuel. 

On meeting an ignition source 

– in this case the already burning 

fire – the vapour cloud ignites. 

Sometimes with horrendous 

results. 

Not a nice way to remember a 

party, where alcohol consumption 

can overcome normal 

common sense and influence a 

decision that, in hindsight, might 

just be seen as ‘unwise’.

article on the Halswell 

Skate and Recreation Park

My husband Bob and I, 

would like to endorse the city 

council’s preferred location for 

the proposed Halswell Skate and 

Recreation Park to be sited in 

Knights Stream Sports Park, as 

we feel this is the ideal place for 

it to be. 

After reading the front page 

article in the latest Western 

News that outlined the advantages 

of this site for example 

co-coordinating a skate park 

with other facilities such as 

a “learn to ride bike track” 

basketball and sports facilities, 

we concluded that this site could 

become a great place for the 

youth of Halswell, without being 

contentious to local residents. 

J Wilson: 

The article Skate park decision 

soon in the Western News states 

that the nearest residential area 

is Whincops Rd. Looking at 

the proposed site it seems to 

be directly beside and within a 

residential area as housing goes 

from Whincops Rd right up to 

the Knights Stream Sports Park. 

It appears to be misleading 

readers to say the nearest 

residential area is Whincops Rd. 

I would think the noise etc from 

a skate park would certainly 

impact on value of housing 

adjacent to the proposed skate 

park. 

Bowen Hodgson: 

Should we have a skate park in 

Halswell? 

Personally I believe we should 

have a skate park in Halswell. 

I’m saying this coming from a 

teenager’s perspective. Having 

grown up in Halswell for the 

last 10 years, there really isn’t 

much to do from a teenager’s 

perspective. 

Yes, there is a pool but that is 

only open for half the year in 

the summer and playgrounds 

for younger kids, but for those 

who want to skate, there aren’t 

a lot of good skate spots. And 

the few good spots there are, 

you are at risk of being hit by a 

car or smashing into somebody 

walking by. 

I understand that some people 

are worried that some teenage 

skaters will get cause trouble, 

trash the place and just be a 

place for “the non-desirables”. 

But coming from a skater, to 

have a skate park in Halswell 

that I can walk or skate would 

be awesome. I would look after 

it so myself and others can use it 

and enjoy it more. 

Another reason is Halswell 

has lots of sports fields, multiple 

playgrounds, a mini ride-able 

railway and a new library. It 

seems like a place for everybody 

but teenagers who want to hang 

out with friends and skate. 

Shouldn’t Halswell be a place 

for everybody? Young kids, 

youths, families and elders. 

Shouldn’t it be a place for 

everybody to enjoy themselves 

and have a good time? 

Possible locations I think the 

skate park could be are Scott 

Park, Westlake Reserve and the 

best Halswell Domain.

The skate park should not be 

in Knights Stream Sports Park. 

This park is too far away from 

the centre of Halswell. The 

report in the Western News 

states that the nearest residential 

area is Whincops Rd. Have the 

city councillors looked at this 

area recently? The residences in 

Denali St and Richmond Ave 

are adjacent to Knights Stream 

Sports Park, not 190m away. We 

agree with a “learn to ride” 

bicycle track, netball and rugby 

facilities as indicated on the 

landscape plan we received a few 

weeks ago.

Wigram Skies, Halswell and Fendalton homes grab awards 

HOUSES FROM Wigram Skies, Halswell 

and Fendalton have been recognised in 

the annual House of the Year awards. 

The results of the regional competition 

were revealed at a gala dinner last 

Friday at the Air Force Museum of New 

Zealand. 

The winning houses were celebrated by 

members of the Canterbury Registered 

Master Builders Association and 

members of the local construction 

industry. 

There were 40 gold award winners from 

Canterbury which will now be judged 

against winners from around the country 

to find the National Gold Reserve 

finalists. 

BRIGHT: A Wigram Skies home was named a gold 

award and category winner. 

ACHIEVEMENT: This house by Form Builders Ltd in Fendalton 

received a gold award. 

Journey of discovery 

in the great outdoors 

A HEI HEI resident has been 

on the adventure of a lifetime 

after he earned a scholarship to 

attend the outdoor education 

programme Outward Bound 

last month. 

Hamish Reid, 27, has been 

busy swimming before sunrise, 

traversing high ropes, climbing 

rock faces while blind folded 

and spending time in the Queen 

Charlotte Sound. 

Mr Reid received the scholarship 

to Outward Bound as part 

of his prize package for being 

named Master Builders Apprentice 

of the Year. 

He works for Leighs Construction 

based in the city. 

Mr Reid said that while he 

was prepared for the physical 

challenges, he wasn’t prepared 

for sharing a dorm room with 

“14 other blokes”. 

“I didn’t pack my nose plug,” 

he said. 

But Mr Reid said he has been 

inspired by the Outward Bound 

programme and is planning to 

become more involved in the 

Hei Hei community. 

“I would love to be a scout 

leader . . . coach a sports team, 

start to give back to the community. 

By caring for our environment, 

we are effectively caring 

for our community’s future 

generations,” he said. 

One of the key experiences 

for Mr Reid was a “solo experience” 

where he was left alone 

with limited food and shelter for 

three days. 

This was so he could spend 

time writing and thinking about 

future goals.

Way off Broadway 

brings out talent 

SHOWBIZ Christchurch held its 

popular Way Off Broadway show 

earlier this month. 

The bi-monthly concert is an 

open-mic night for performers, 

held at the NASDA studios at the 

Ara Institute of Canterbury in the 

central city. 

For each performance, nine 

singers individually took to the 

stage to sing musical theatre accompanied 

by the piano. 

The singers were accompanied 

by pianist Sam Jury. 

The recent performance 

included songs from well-known 

musicals, such as My Fair Lady, 

Les Miserables, Dreamgirls, Jekyll 

and Hyde and Willy Wonka. 

There will be two more Way Off 

Broadway performances this year 

with a duet evening on September 

9 and further solo performances 

on December 11. 

The performances are unauditioned.

IT HAS been confirmed that 

Halswell Residential College will 

become a co-educational campus. 

The decision announced last 

week by Education Minister 

Hekia Parata was welcomed by 

staff, students and their families. 

The college first applied for 

co-educational – also known as 

mixed-gender education – status 

in 2012. 

Halswell Residential College 

provides special education 

within a residential setting for 

students with an intellectual 

impairment. 

Board of Trustees chairman 

Lois Chick (below) said she was 

pleased they would no longer have 

to turn students away because 

they were female. 

“Since January 

2014, we have 

been able to enrol 

up to five girls at 

Halswell Residential 

College,” she

were still officially 

a single sex boys’ school, which 

disadvantaged female students.”

Tyra Adlam aka Maleficent 

Playing the villain for charity 

Tyra Adlam has a second life as one Disney’s most-loved 

villains, Maleficent. Georgia O’Connor-Harding spoke to 

her about the reaction she gets when undertaking charity 

work dressed as the “mistress of all evil” 

Why did you decide to dress 

up as Maleficent? 

A lot of it had to do with being 

drawn to gothic characters. 

Characters that are crazy pale, 

with colourful eyes decked out 

in black. Maleficent is very 

commanding and powerful. I 

have so much more confidence 

in my real life now after dressing 

as this character. 

What was it like when 

you made your first public 

appearance as Maleficent? 

It was Halloween and I ended 

up going on a bus trip and having 

a great time. I didn’t realise 

New Zealand had these Armageddon 

expos. When I went to 

my first expo I had no idea what 

to expect. I spent the first hour 

posing for photos. The reaction 

was staggering. My character 

encourages strength and power. 

Meeting like-minded people in 

the community was great, too. I 

got into charity events through 

that. The goal now, with my 

friend Darth Vader, is to do as 

much good as possible. Our 

characters both know what it’s 

like to suffer. We both want to 

give back to people who need 

help – there is nothing in this 

world like it. 

What events do you attend as 

Maleficent? 

I go to Armageddon, and do 

charity and not-for-profit work 

with the Christchurch Faerie 

Circle. 

What do you do as a day job? 

I have worked at the Christchurch 

Horror Maze over the 

summer as a scare actress. 

Because of health issues I’ve got, 

I can’t really do a great deal. 

So it hasn’t been an easy 

journey? 

No. Ever since I was diagnosed 

with a chronic illness it has 

been ongoing. Finding the right 

balance is so important because 

you can do too much. Some 

days are really good but you can 

push yourself a little too much 

and your body can protest the 

next day. One of the reasons I 

love being Maleficent is because 

it is not about me. When I do a

It is really nice focusing yourself

You have a great outlook. 

You kind of have to. You get to 

a point where you can either sit 

there and be miserable about the 

things you can’t change, or you 

can invest your energy into the 

good stuff. 

Tell me about your family? 

I have a sister who is incredibly 

supportive. My parents live 

in Te Puki, near Tauranga. It 

is the Kiwifruit capital of New 

Zealand. My family think it is 

great I dress up. There is this idea 

that it is weird and there can be 

judgment, but my family think 

it is great. They get right behind 

it and support it. My sister is an 

artist. She is a painter that just 

got into sculpting and is very 

creative. My grand-father, who 

passed away in 1997, was into 

pottery so there has always been 

an artistic influence in my family. 

Have you ever considered 

going into acting? 

I have toyed with the idea. But 

with my chronic illness, there 

is no telling how I will be on 

any one day. Charity events do 

not happen too often and they 

are only for a few hours. Even 

if I don’t feel great, there is the 

reward of helping others and I 

can push myself through. But it 

is a matter of listening to what 

the body is saying.

And how old are you? 

I am 36. All my friends complain 

they are getting older, 

but I am getting closer to 40 

and love it. It is actually really 

exciting. In my 20s, I was like 

most people. I was relatively 

self-absorbed, self-focused 

and a bit dramatic. Obviously 

living though the earthquakes 

was a pretty traumatic experience. 

That was when I realised 

I needed help. I had extensive 

therapy. I needed to address 

over-coming my grief. I knew 

people who died in the 2011 

earthquake. But I have now 

put that trauma behind me. 

The main thing is to keep 

moving forward. 

How do children react 

when they see you? 

It does vary. I have done 

some faerie events where children 

come rushing up to me 

and throw their arms around 

me. On the flip-side, some find 

my whole look intimidating. I 

have been known to have done 

charity events where children 

look at me and burst into tears. 

When you were younger 

did you enjoy fairy tales? 

I was always drawn to the 

dark characters. When I was 

four-years-old I remember 

going into kindergarten and 

the teacher asked what we 

want to be when we grew up. 

I wanted to be Lily Munster 

because she was a vampire. 

When I started watching 

Disney movies I found the 

villains interesting. Oldschool 

princesses were one 

dimensional. Nowadays you 

have movies like Frozen where 

the princesses have their own 

defined personalities. But 

back in the earlier days, their 

entire existence was having a 

man save them and there was 

nothing exciting about that. 

And I take it you are 

pleased about the Disney 

films getting made these 

days? 

It is one of the things Frozen 

has done. It is redefining 

what true love is. It is nice 

seeing princess characters 

who actually are characters. 

The reason the character 

Anna from the film Frozen is 

so relatable is because she is 

quirky and goofy.

Do you think there is good 

in all people? 

That is a hard one to answer 

because at what point do you 

say a person needs help and 

at what point do you say they 

are beyond help? I think we 

have all found ourselves in 

situations that compromise 

our moral compass. We do 

live in a society where people 

are hard on each other. Just 

look at social media and the 

bullying that is online these 

days. People hide behind their 

computers and say horrendous 

things.

HE’S BACK! Scotty Bamford returns to 

the screen tomorrow night on CTV, in an 

all new season of Rural New Zealand. 

Mr Bamford will return to the screen 

for the first time in nearly 12 months 

after a near-fatal truck crash over the 

Christmas period last year. 

The Rural New Zealand team have been 

hard at work following the end of season 

two, earlier this year with filming for 

season three beginning in July.

days filming over the winter, the weather 

has really played ball. We’ve been travelling

how the Ashburton-based agricultural 

business has grown into a diverse 

international operation,” he said. 

Mr Bamford said that one of his 

highlights this season was a recent trip to 

Omarama, to meet the 2015 South Island 

Farmer of the Year co-winner Richard 

Subtil. 

Later in the season Mr Subtil will 

explain the effort that went into 

recognition in the competition and his 

plans to future-proof the family farm for 

generations to come.

of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients 

visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.

stolk suggests that a major part of the 

pain could be due to muscle pain rather 

than simply arthritis. “even if an x-ray 

shows arthritis, the reason for the pain 

may be the muscles around the joint,” 

she explains. The images show how 

a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back 

muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain 

are the red areas in the drawings), a knot 

in a muscle on the back of the shoulder 

blade can give a deep pain in the front 

of the shoulder and a muscle knot all the 

way near the groin can give an ache in 

the knee (especially at night in bed). 

ietje recalls one case where an 89 

year old client with severe arthritis who 

walked with a stick, told her, “i will 

end up in a wheelchair, i cannot put 

any weight through my right leg due to 

pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within
