HE’S OFF: Jordan
CBHS keep top spot with win over St Andrew’s
• By Andrew King
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
dug deep to stay top of the
table with a two-point victory
over close rival St Andrew’s on
Saturday.
A blazing run from replacement
fullback Rico Syme, who
debuted off the bench with
20min to go, drew the match 23-
23 with a 68th minute try.
Alex Harford then kicked the
conversion to snatch a 25-23 victory
at the death, helping CBHS
to retain their top spot on the
UC Championship table.
Syme said when he saw he only
had one player between him and
the try line, he was confident he
would go all the way.
“I knew that if I got on the outside
of him I was going to score.
Since it was the winning try it
felt pretty unreal,” he said.
St Andrew’s were reduced to
14 players when fullback Tom
Anderson was sent behind the
sticks for a high tackle in the
66th minute leaving an overlap
in the backline.
Manager Rob Smith said it was
a real testament to playing for
the full 70min.
He said it was part of the culture
in the squad to play right up
until the final whistle and past it
if need be.
“He [Syme] put the foot down
at the right time, didn’t he? It is
really great to see the boys keep
going after it right up until the
final minutes,” Smith said.
In other Saturday games, St
Bede’s were thrashed by Nelson
College 62-17, while Burnside
had a tough day at the office
against Timaru Boys’ High losing
66-5.
St Thomas will look to bounce
back after a 24-32 loss to CBHS
in round 7 when they take on
Roncalli today.
Attack coach Paul Burton said
they have been happy with the
past month’s results, they may
not be wins but they are heading
in the right direction he said.
“We will look to continue our
improvement, stick to our game
plans and look for consistent
performances,” he said.
He said the boys are excited to
play today.
The game will be played at
Middlepark Rd at 12.45pm.
