Detailed 

skate park 

designs 

finally 

completed

AFTER THREE years of 

planning, all detailed design and 

specifications have been completed 

for the two proposed skate parks 

in Halswell. 

The parks, which will be in 

Halswell Domain and Knights 

Stream Park, will be skate-ready 

by January. 

City council head of parks Brent 

Smith said they won’t release costs 

of the parks due to commercial 

sensitivities ahead of the tendering 

process. 

“The funding comes from two 

areas. One being parks capital 

funding for Halswell Domain so 

this is shown in the Annual Plan, 

and the other funding for Knights 

Stream Park is from development 

contributions for the subdivision,” 

Mr Smith said. 

City councillor Vicki Buck said 

it was important to have the skate 

parks because children are so 

important in communities. 

“You’re building communities 

for all of the population, and you 

need to remember what children 

want to do,” Cr Buck said. 

But some residents weren’t so 

pleased with the noise and antisocial 

behaviour the skate parks 

may attract.

THE TWO proposed Halswell 

skate parks are going to make a 

big difference in the community. 

As you’ll read on page 1, some 

neighbours have opposed the 

skate parks, saying they don’t 

want the anti-social behaviour 

near their houses. 

This is a fair call, but putting 

a facility like a skate park in 

a residential area is not only 

something children want but 

something they need. 

It’s a good chance for children 

to get off their devices and do 

some exercise. 

The parks also provide children 

with an opportunity to 

socialise with their neighbours. 

The days of walking over to 

your neighbour’s house to play 

together seem to be a thing of 

the past because children are too 

distracted by technology.

Fire rages, homes at risk 

ABOUT 40 new jobs will be 

created in Hornby when a 28,551 

sq m supermarket distribution 

centre is built. 

The Foodstuffs temperaturecontrolled 

building in Hickory Pl 

will be completed in March 2019. 

The first stage is expected to be 

open in August next year. 

The centre will offer between 

30 to 40 new jobs in order picking, 

inventory control, forklift 

drivers and truck drivers. 

Foodstuffs bought the land in 

2010, started planning in 2014 

and are expecting the first stage 

to be complete in August 2018. 

With all work on the centre due 

to be completed in March 2019. 

“Our existing temperaturecontrolled 

facility is struggling to 

keep up with demand – particularly 

in peak trading periods,” 

Foodstuffs South Island chief 

executive officer Steve Anderson 

said. 

“This new facility will increase 

our chiller capacity by 100 per 

cent and our freezer capacity by 

50 per cent. For customers, that 

means we’ll be able to offer an 

expanded range of products. For 

our stores, it means they’ll get 

those products delivered daily – 

seven days a week. We’re investing 

in range and supply chain so 

that we can get products out to 

stores even faster,” Mr Anderson 

said. 

The three other chillers already 

existing in Hornby will be 

demolished and turned into car 

parking. 

More jobs to be created in Hornby 

Sixteen dock doors, four large 

chiller chambers, two 1000 KVA 

generators, a truck wash and a 

weighbridge are among some of 

the features the new centre will 

have.

term, that means we can offer a 

logistics service to our suppliers, 

who want to use our space to 

store their excess product, and 

save on transport costs,” Mr 

Anderson said. 

NEW LIGHTS AT ISLINGTON 

Two new sets of traffic lights 

were installed in Islington 

yesterday. The lights have been 

placed at the intersection of 

Main South Rd and Pound Rd, 

and Pound Rd and Waterloo 

Rd. In addition to this, there 

are two lanes for straight 

through traffic on Main South 

Rd at the intersection with 

Pound Rd. 

SCHOOL’S CULTURAL DAY 

Ilam School is celebrating 

different cultures today. 

Pupils will wear outfits 

representing a culture and 

will take a plate of food to 

share which is relevant to their 

chosen culture. There will also 

be a concert from 11am to

ROAD NAMES 

New road names in two 

Halswell subdivisions may 

be approved tonight at the 

Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton 

Community Board meeting. 

The board will discuss the 

names for four roads in Awatea 

Park and Quarry View. City 

council staff recommended 

the names be Romanee Lane, 

Muirhill St, Pegson Lane and 

Foden Lane.

Vehicles parked illegally not ticketed

AN ILAM resident is 

frustrated five construction 

company vehicles parked 

illegally two weeks ago were 

not ticketed, when more than 

80 other motorists have been 

in the last two months. 

But the city council said in 

this case it was better to get 

the vehicles moved as soon 

as possible, rather than issue 

tickets. 

Parkstone Ave resident 

Lynette Hardie Wills said on 

Tuesday two weeks ago, five

utility vehicles were parked in 

a no stopping part of the street 

for 90min. 

She said it created safety 

concerns because it made seeing 

oncoming traffic difficult, 

so she called the city council 

to complain. 

But when a parking warden 

arrived, he did not ticket the 

vehicles, instead calling 

Naylor Love to have them 

removed, she said. 

Dr Hardie Wills said it was 

unfair regular motorists were 

being ticketed, yet construction 

company vehicles were 

not. 

She said last year staff from 

Southern Response were at her 

home to do EQC repairs, and 

even they were ticketed. 

Dr Hardie Willis said the 

contractors should be able to 

park in Canterbury University’s 

Solway Ave car park for 

free, seeing as they were doing 

work for the university. 

But a Canterbury University 

spokesperson said they already 

have 610 temporary parks for 

contractors. 

“It would be unfair to offer 

free parking to contractors 

when staff and students pay to 

park on campus,” a Canterbury 

University spokesperson said. 

City council data shows 

since July 1, it issued 83 infringement 

tickets to vehicles 

on Parkstone Ave. 

Fifty-three were for parking 

in a no stopping area, six were 

for an expired warrant of fitness, 

and 20 were issued for 

unlicensed vehicles. 

The rest were for parking in 

excess of the two-hour restriction, 

parking on a yellow line, 

obstructing a vehicle entrance, 

and not displaying a vehicle 

licence. 

City council transport 

operations manager Aaron 

Haymes said the rules were 

the same for everyone.

Love and asked the trucks be 

moved, which was done “immediately.” 

Mr Haymes said since the 

incident, the site manager had 

told staff not to park on Parkstone 

Ave due to the safety 

concerns raised. 

He said compliance staff had 

been monitoring the street and 

no trucks had parked there 

since. 

Naylor Love declined to 

comment.

FEAST DAY 

Message from the Catholic Diocese 

of Christchurch 

Our Diocese is proud of Marian College. The school is 

thriving at its inner-city campus location alongside the 

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Barbadoes Street. 

Marian College shows us clearly that the heart of a 

Catholic school lies not in its buildings, but in a strong, 

supportive community built around faith. 

Marian College belongs to the Catholic Kāhui Ako 

Community of Learning, one of our 13 schools in 

Christchurch. Each school has an affiliated parish and 

networks contributing to the Diocese. 

Alongside our Diocese earthquake rebuild and repair 

programme, our parishes have been offered the chance to 

focus on spiritual renewal as we wait for a new Bishop 

to be appointed. 

The process for the rebuild of Marian College’s campus 

will be a priority for our new Bishop, who will ultimately 

make the decision on Marian College’s permanent site. 

This decision will not be made in isolation however, 

there are many factors to consider and groups to consult 

with, given the changes in our communities since 

the earthquakes. 

The Diocese looks forward to keeping the community 

updated on progress. In the meantime, Marian College 

continues to achieve excellent results and to thrive. 

A special thank you goes to the Marian College 

community – students, parents, staff and leadership, for 

your ongoing patience, support and cooperation.

Feast Day Festivities 

One of the most anticipated events on the Marian 

College calendar is Feast Day – recognised every year to 

celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This year, Feast Day 

began with a whole school Mass, which included the 

blessing of the new music department, featuring practice 

spaces and a multipurpose room. 

Traditional Feast Day activities involve Marian College’s 

house groups coming together in Xavier Hall to compete 

in a talent quest and house group chant competition. 

Rivalry between the four Marian College houses – 

Brodie, Deans, Seymour and Takahe – is strong and 

overwhelmingly positive. Students have been known to 

rehearse their chants and performances for up to six weeks 

in advance, polishing their acts ready for competition. 

Each performance is judged and awarded house points 

which are tallied throughout the year. The house with 

the most points earned – for academic, sporting, cultural, 

service and cultural achievements – is awarded the annual 

Inter-House Shield at the end of year school prize giving. 

Aiming for France 

Football talent Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu) 

could be heading to France next year to represent New 

Zealand and play in the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup. 

The Year 13 Marian college student helped captain 

the New Zealand U19 Football team to victory in the 

Oceania Football Confederation championships in 

Auckland recently, securing the team’s spot in France, 

2018. Rebecca captained the team twice over the five 

game campaign which saw the team win all their games 

convincingly. Rebecca is a member of the Football Ferns 

development squad and has played with Mainland Pride 

(the National Women’s regional team) for three years. 

RIA KNEY 

Judo medallist 

Congratulations to Ria Kney (Ngāti Kahungunu) who 

won a gold medal in the U52kg girls category at the New 

Zealand Secondary Schools Judo Tournament last term. 

She won all five of her fights in the one day tournament 

held at Lincoln High School. Ria also won gold in two 

categories at the Auckland International Judo Open 

tournament held three weeks later at ASB Stadium in 

Auckland. One of her fights lasted just ten seconds! 

Wellbeing and service 

A priority for Marian College this year has been student 

and staff wellbeing. This year, Marian has introduced two 

new courses: Kia Maia and Mana Wahine. Kia Maia is a 

course for Year 9 students which focuses on wellbeing, 

character strengths, use of money, cyber safety and 

developing study and life skills. 

The Mana Wahine course aims to promote strong Marian 

women. Especially for year 12 students, the course 

teaches wellbeing, study techniques, life skills, careers, 

financial literacy and service. 

Marian College has a strong commitment to providing 

service to the community. Not only students, but staff 

members are also actively involved. 

Marian College staff members rolled up their sleeves 

recently, to spend an afternoon participating in a range of 

service activities including assisting at Christchurch City 

Mission and St Vincent de Paul, cleaning up a beach, 

gardening for the Beatitude sisters, making goods for 

Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit and other 

children in need. 

Southern Jam 

Marian College’s Jazz Band travelled to the Southern 

Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently – taking part 

in the showcase and celebration of the South Island’s 

secondary school jazz bands. Marian College’s Jazz Band 

performed at eight public venues and took home a bronze 

award. Band director Frances Daly is a Marian old girl 

currently studying at Ara Jazz School. Frances inspired 

the Jazz Band to compose an original song ‘Dirty 

Window’, which won Best Original Song at this year’s 

Christchurch Jazz Festival.

IT’S SET in stone for Hornby 

High School. 

The school’s new gymnasium 

had its concrete poured last 

weekend – this is part of the 

multi-million dollar upgrade by 

the Ministry of Education. 

The new gymnasium will feature 

a full-size basketball court, 

fitness centre, teaching space, 

equipment storage, changing 

rooms and showers, and staff 

office areas. 

The school will also retain its 

existing gymnasium, giving the 

school two full-size indoor basketball 

courts. 

“We are a chunk of the way 

through what is an almost full 

school rebuild,” Hornby High 

School principal Mr Sutton said. 

“It’s part of the whole ministry 

infrastructure reinvestment and 

the figure I heard was something

facilities and that’s exactly what 

they’re going to get and that’s 

probably the most exciting 

thing,” Mr Sutton said. 

Mr Sutton said they’re looking 

forward to being able to focus 

solely on good learning once the 

rebuild is complete. 

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a 

grumble at all. We’re absolutely 

rapt. We’re so excited by the 

whole process,” Mr Sutton said.

show was for their daughter. But 

due to varying reasons, her family 

weren’t able to attend. 

She said Maddie now does 

Southern Health School, where a 

teacher visits her home, because 

she is too sick. 

“She’s getting tireder and 

tireder definitely. She doesn’t 

have the same level of energy 

she had a few months ago,” Mrs 

Manson Collins said.

“The staff have done an amazing 

job at getting out and involving 

people in the design and 

then the tweaking of the design,”

The Hub Hornby has undergone significant developments and improvements 

over the last four years, with the aim of providing an exciting 

and diverse shopping experience for its customers. 

One of the key areas that is drawing people into the centre is its fully 

revamped food court, centre manager Jason Marsden says. 

“Customers are really enjoying the variety and quality of the food 

offering in our food court, as well as the more contemporary atmosphere,” 

Jason says. 

“International trends in food courts are changing what used to be quite 

boring places to eat, to becoming much more of an experience for 

customers, and that’s what we offer at The Hub,” he says. 

“Not only does our food court have a great variety of food, there is 

also a range of seating options. For example, we have the round tables 

for groups, and the leaners where people can stop for a quick bite and 

check their mobiles.” 

The acoustic ceiling tiles also enhance the environment by reducing 

noise and making it easier for people to have a conversation, Jason says. 

With a range of ethnic food, including popular Asian cuisines such as 

Indian, Chinese and Japanese, complemented by tasty café-style foods, 

there is plenty for customers to choose from in the food court. 

But that’s not all. The Hub has several other cafés and food outlets 

located amongst the retail businesses, and here again the environment 

and food quality has gone up several notches, Jason says. 

“The cafés have become more restaurant-style, with blackboard menus 

being offered as well as the traditional cabinet food, and again this is in 

line with international trends.” 

The rooftop car park at The Hub has also enhanced the shopping 

experience for customers, with easy access in and out. 

“Shoppers can drive straight up to the car park then take the lift 

directly down to the food court area,” Jason says. 

“Parent car parks right next to the entrance also make it easier for 

those with children to load their shopping and push chair straight into 

their car.”

with spring planting

As the days get longer and the soil slowly 

begins to warm up and dry out, the time is 

right to set about growing your own greens to 

feed the troops. 

POTATOES 

The first sprouted potatoes can go in the 

ground now in the warmer climates. If your 

soil isn’t ready, grow an early-crop in large 

tubs or potato planters. This option will yield 

just as well as growing in the ground, and enable 

you to tuck the pots up against the house 

to protect them from cold snaps. Early-crop 

varieties to plant now include ‘Jersey Benne’, 

‘Rocket’, Swift’, ‘Cliff Kidney’, or ‘Liseta’. Remember 

to enrich the soil with potato food! 

PEAS 

Peas are a super quick and easy crop to grow, 

and have the advantage of being remarkably 

hardy to cold temperatures. They prefer a 

fertile soil in full sun, and would benefit from 

a supporting frame or series of stakes to keep 

the crop off the ground. 

Sow seed directly in the garden where you 

wish it to grow, allowing 10-15cm between 

each plant. I put two seeds in each hole. 

Cover the area with mesh or netting as birds 

just love to peck at fresh pea shoots as they 

emerge through the soil. 

Once the plants reach 15-20cm, the leaves 

don’t seem to have as much appeal, so the 

nets can be removed. They are a great crop 

for tubs and planters, and dwarf varieties 

are wonderful in hanging baskets or window 

boxes. Plant plenty, as once they come ready, 

you never seem to have enough. 

RADISH 

Crisp and zingy, everyone has room to grow 

these nuggets of goodness. All you need is a 

kitchen bucket, some vegetable mix and seeds, 

and you’ll be in business. Why not grow them 

at work if you have a sunny outdoor space? 

It could make for a fun inter-office challenge, 

with prizes on offer for the biggest, smallest, 

ugliest, tastiest and funniest-shaped radish! 

Personally, I prefer the round marble to 

golf-ball-sized types, although the cylindrical 

varieties do get a lot bigger and therefore give 

you more bang for your buck. 

Sow from seed now in rows, or try sowing 

them in a circle or a pattern – kids love doing 

this. Note that you won’t find radishes in 

punnets, as they are very difficult to transplant 

without damaging the roots, so planting in a 

seed line is definitely the best way forward. 

ROCKET 

Rocket, or arugula, is one of the fastest-growing 

and tastiest salad greens around. It is the 

epitome of a low-maintenance crop; you can 

scatter seed directly onto the ground and walk 

away, and will be greeted with seedlings within 

a few weeks, and harvestable leaves only a 

fortnight to a month later. Plants are widely 

available all year round. If the soil dries out in 

summer, the plant will bolt and go to seed, so 

perk up old, tired soil with sheep manure or 

compost before planting in order to avoid this. 

It’s an ideal resident for the patio and window 

boxes near the kitchen, and if you keep picking 

it without allowing it to flower, it will crop for 

up to six months or more, as long as the soil 

remains fertile and regularly watered.

For Canterbury people, the name Musgroves is synonymous 

with recycled and pre-loved building materials and household 

items that can happily find a place in their new or renovated 

home. 

Founded by Dave Musgrove in 1942 as a general cartage 

company, it became Musgrove Bros when Dave was joined by 

his brother Alf in 1946. The business operated as a cartage and 

road contracting company until 1970. 

The previous year, when the management was taken over by 

Graeme Vickers, the company’s work had extended to include 

demolition and the sale of recycled materials. Demolition 

continued for a number of years, before Musgroves began to 

specialise in buying and selling recycled building materials. 

Since those early days, the product mix has evolved, and there 

are now many different types of product carried by Musgroves, 

general manager Sue Brown says. Volume has expanded significantly 

too, with some 70,000 items now on the yard at any 

one time, including new and pre-used. 

For Musgroves, re-purposing products is at the heart of their 

philosophy, Sue says. 

“We’re here to help people with their renovations. Many of 

our items are materials left over from building jobs, such as 

insulation, roofing iron, trellis etc. 

“The pre-used items people bring in include items such as 

doors, ranchsliders, windows, and kitchen units. And there is a 

huge selection for customers to browse through.” 

Of course there are the special treasures, too. One Sue is particularly 

thrilled with is a series of large oak ceiling panels, each 

in four sections, which came from an architecturally designed 

home, and lay unused for seven years before they were taken 

to Musgroves. 

Another unusual item is a large, four-door oak entertainment 

cabinet, which Sue says could be an eye-catching feature piece 

in someone’s new or renovated home. 

People renovating older properties often need to match existing

from building extensions 

The team hard at work. 

There is a lot of hard work going on at the Hei Hei building 

known as 126 On the Corner, with the local community set to 

benefit. 

Formerly named St Aidan’s church, the building was purchased 

by the Hei Hei Broomfield Community Development Charitable 

Trust three years ago for the community’s use with support 

from the Christchurch City Council, and is currently undergoing 

extension work. 

The extensions will incorporate an office and increased storage, 

with earthquake strengthening work being carried out on 

the side of the building. 

“This is the first of a number of planned improvements to the 

building,” community development worker Tracey Buunk says. 

“The men from the Southern Institute of Technology are doing 

all the building work for us – at an amazing rate. They started a 

month ago and we expect to be completed by Christmas. The 

floor is down and in a few weeks the framing will be erected 

and the roof put on. 

“The extension is being generously supported by Council, 

the local Community Board, the Lotteries Commission, R.A. 

Shearing’s, Mitre 10, Action Scaffolding, Fahey’s Fencing and SIT,” 

Tracey says. 

“The cost will be greatly reduced by the donations of time, 

materials, equipment and funds. Many thanks to everyone for 

their contributions.” 

Activities 126 On The Corner provides for the community 

include a cooking group, a variety group, a walking group, tai 

chi, men’s group, tea and tots group, fun fit group, community 

lunches and Kix Taekwondo. 

First aid courses and church services are also held in the building, 

and it is available for hire for private functions. 

Two weeks ago, the trust’s sheds were broken into and the Kix 

Taekwondo equipment was stolen. 

“We are very saddened that this has happened,” Tracey says, 

“and we are now looking at how we can replace the $3200 

worth of equipment the group needs for when it meets two or 

three times a week.” 

As an employee of Anglican Care Community Development 

and a trustee on the board, Tracey is keen to find out what 

other activities the community would like to see being run in 

the building. 

“We want to know where the gaps are in our community and 

the ways we can continue to grow together for the benefit of 

local people. 

“We have a group of volunteers that make it possible to offer 

all that we do and allow us to increase what we offer. Without 

their commitment 126 On The Corner would be unable to 

make a positive difference in our community.”

World cup Fever 

about to hit hornby 

Volunteer tradesmen spent many hours getting 

the clubrooms ready for the visitors. 

There are exciting times ahead for the Hornby Rugby League 

Club. Shortly they will host The Kiwis Rugby League Team for 

training sessions ahead of their World Cup match against Scotland 

at AMI Stadium on November 4, 2017. 

“In April this year we offered to host the Kiwis for their training 

sessions,” club president Brent Tomlinson says. 

“The Rugby League World Cup organisers, New Zealand Rugby 

League, Canterbury Rugby League, our own club and the Christchurch 

City Council all got on board.” 

A lot of work needed to be done to prepare the club’s facilities 

for the visitors, Brent says. 

“The council was responsible for preparing the grounds, and the 

club’s role was to upgrade the clubrooms. Our changing rooms 

needed a complete makeover to bring them up to international 

standards. 

“The changing rooms have been relined and repainted and the 

showers have been completely refurbished. This has involved 

hours and hours of work by volunteer tradesmen to get it all 

done. 

“It was also an expensive project, and funds have come from 

fundraising, grants, a number of sponsors and local club supporters,” 

Brent says. 

“We would like to thank Keith Burgess, Peter Lawrie, Ho 

Hogg, Kent Ramsay, Craig Dunn, Mike Dormer, Mark Allison of 

Independent Fisheries, Jason Hatton of Hatton Plastering, Dean 

Brewster of Brewster Building, Air Rescue and CERT for their 

support.” 

The project has also required sacrifices from the Hornby Rugby 

League members themselves. 

“We haven’t been able to play games at our home field all 

season, but that’s how committed we are to having the Kiwis at 

Hornby. Kiwis’ coach David Kidwell is a Hornby Rugby League 

Junior and we are proud that he is bringing the Kiwis to his 

home club.” 

Work on the clubrooms started in early April, with the finishing 

touches being put on the facilities just last week.

For Christchurch real estate agent Pip Sutton, 

real estate is a family heritage spanning 

four generations over approximately 93 

years. 

It all started with her great-grandfather Frederick 

in 1924, out of Lyttelton. Her grandfather,

In 2005, Pip returned to Christchurch to 

commence her real estate career under the

These are significant times for the longestablished 

Sockburn School in Springs Road, 

Hornby. This year the school is celebrating its 

60th anniversary, and next year will mark the 

first step of a major change. 

In January 2018, the school will be given a new 

name – Wigram Primary, and this will be in 

preparation for the school’s relocation to the 

Wigram Primary site on the Runway in January 

2019, principal Heather Walkinshaw says. 

Detailed design of the new school is currently 

underway, with construction to be carried out 

by Southbase. 

“Southbase has had recent experience with 

new school builds, and will bring their expertise 

to the build,” Ms Walkinshaw says. “Work 

on the new school is expected to start in 

January 2018.” 

The new site was blessed by representatives 

of the local Taumutu Rununga on August 8, 

with the ceremony attended by the then Associate 

Minister of Education, Tim Macindoe. 

The school will also have a new uniform with 

a new logo, which is now being embroidered 

on to the new uniforms. 

The logo, which features two kahu facing each 

other with the runway through the middle, has 

been designed to represent the history of the 

area. Kahu were prevalent in the area and the 

runway recalls the history of the air force at 

Wigram.

LOOKING BACK… 

The first headmaster of Sockburn Public 

School when it was established in1957 was Mr 

A. R. Chambers. A photo from the time shows 

there were 11 teachers, a clerical assistant and 

a nurse.

how little development there was at both the 

airbase and in the surrounding area. 

The first school committee was formed in 

1957 and the iconic school pool, which was 

opened in1961, is still used by the students. 

The Wigram Airbase families had a long connection 

with the school until Wigram Aerodrome 

was closed in 1995 following the CFS’ 

relocation to RNZAF Ohakeatwo years earlier. 

At that point Sockburn School roll dropped 

by about 80 students. Some school relocatable 

buildings were then removed to Hagley High.

went to the organisation, with just over $500 being

teas and afternoon teas, with the food being boxed 

up and ready for collection as required.

Hornby’s Waterloo Business Park continues to 

grow at an impressive rate, bringing increased 

business activity to the area. In driving through 

the park, there is a palpable sense of activity 

and momentum owing to the large number of 

sites currently under construction. 

“Waterloo reached its tipping point sometime 

in the past 12 months,” assistant development 

manager Joel Webber says, “where we gained a 

critical mass of sales and construction activity 

that marked a transition from large, burgeoning

work on track 

Despite an unusually wet winter, work on the $195 million 

Christchurch Southern Motorway – Stage 2 (CSM2) project 

has not been held up, with more than 300,000 cubic metres of 

earth moved, two new local roads built and the first of eight 

bridges almost complete. 

Principal project manager Geoff Griffiths says people can 

expect to see more changes over the coming months as work 

ramps up. 

Mr Griffiths noted that on Wednesday August 30, two 

180-tonne cranes put the final four ‘Super-T Beams’ that make 

up the Main South Road Bridge into place. 

“The structure, which will take Main South Road traffic up 

and over the motorway, is made up of 16 locally made precast 

beams, which range from 30 to 35 metres long and weigh up 

to 68 tonnes each. It will be the first of the project’s eight 

bridges to be finished,” he said. 

Along with the Main South Road Bridge, the CSM2 team have 

also started constructing the Waterholes Road and Trent 

Road bridges and built two new local roads - Tiptree Lane and 

Manion Road. 

“These new roads will give people access to their homes and 

local businesses, and in the case of Manion Road, allow the 

CSM2 team to carry on with work to four-lane the motorway 

from Weedons Road towards Curraghs Road,” Mr Griffiths 

said. 

“Meanwhile, at the city end of the project, John Paterson Drive 

is being realigned to join with Halswell Junction Road. This 

work will continue until the end of the year when the new 

alignment is expected to open to traffic.” 

Mr Griffiths said people travelling around the Selwyn District, 

near the project, should expect detours and road closures at 

times as work on the project continues. 

“Traffic will be closely monitored to try to reduce disruption 

and delays; however, people should plan ahead and allow extra 

travel time as work continues on the CSM2. 

“We would also like to remind people to obey the traffic 

management that is in place while the project is underway. 

The speed restrictions and road closures are in place for your 

safety as well as the safety of our crews.” 

The Christchurch Southern Motorway (Stage One, completed, 

and Stage Two, underway) is expected to halve travel time 

between Rolleston and Christchurch at peak times from 30 

minutes to 15 and reduce fatal and serious crashes by 40 per 

cent. 

Stage Two is on track to be open to traffic in early 2020.

residential groWth 

set to continue in the west 

The residential population of Christchurch’s western suburbs 

has grown significantly since the Canterbury earthquakes of 

2010 and 2011, and that growth looks set to continue for 

some time. 

A number of subdivisions have already been developed across 

the area in response to that growth, with more coming on 

stream over the next few years. 

One new one being developed is an extension to the existing 

Country Palms subdivision in Halswell, which was established 

prior to the earthquakes by development company Suburban 

Estates. 

“That one was well received and sold quickly,” company manager 

Tracey Watson says. 

“The new development is smaller, with 100 lots. The first stage, 

comprising 33 lots, has just been released, with the remainder 

to be released over the next couple of years.” 

Section sizes range from 400sqm to 700sqm, with access 

through the existing Country Palms development. 

“The subdivision has access to good infrastructure, with the 

opportunity to have access to Halswell Junction Road, and 

there are good facilities all within a kilometre,” Ms Watson 

says. 

A newcomer to the Christchurch market, Avanda Group, is 

developing a site at 197 Halswell Junction Road. Planning and 

design work has started and civil engineering work will get 

underway once designs are finalised, marketing manager Sarah 

Davidson says. 

The existing plan for the development includes 197 lots, with 

section sizes ranging from 300sqm to 650sqm. 

“There is an allowance within the plan for a small number of 

integrated housing lots, should the demand for such products 

develop over the course of the sales programme,” Ms Davidson 

says. 

She says Avanda has spent a number of months speaking to 

active parties in the market, and listening to what purchasers 

want. 

“This information has been at the forefront of our decision 

making. We are in the process of appointing a local urban 

design and landscape architect team to assist in the design of 

the layout and the treatment of outdoor spaces to make 197 

Halswell Junction Road a welcoming community,” Ms Davidson 

says. 

“Avanda chose to develop in Halswell as it is a growing and 

popular community that we wanted to be part of. There is a 

demand for good-sized sections in the area. 

“We hope this will be the first of many developments in 

Christchurch for Avanda.” 

Several other subdivisions in the area have had council consent. 

There are 205 lots over three subdivisions in Awatea Rd, Carrs 

Rd and Halswell Junction Rd. 

A further 634 lots across four sub divisions in Sutherlands Rd, 

Halswell Junction Rd, and Milns Rd are currently subject to a

I’m a big motorsport fan, Formula One in 

particular. 

Even though Ferrari as a team is giving Mercedes-Benz 

a run for its money this season, 

the latter has dominated the sport in recent 

years. 

Ultimately, that success trickles down to sales 

from the showroom floor. That is certainly 

showing here in New Zealand. Mercedes-Benz 

is dominating the luxury car market and I 

don’t see that changing any time soon, simply 

because the raft of models and variants within 

each model range means there is a vehicle for 

all tastes and budgets. 

There is also a large proliferation of sporty 

models and the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz 

– AMG – has kept up the pace 

with high output models sitting in tandem 

within the line-up. 

I’m not sure how inspired AMG is from Formula 

One, but you can rest assured that some 

technology from the sport flows down to 

street vehicles. 

The latest AMG model to come my way was 

the C63S cabriolet, which has a twin-turbocharged 

4-litre V8 engine delivering monster 

power outputs of 375kW and 700Nm of 

torque. 

Even though these figures are highly impressive, 

the cabriolet can easily be driven sedately. 

It is at home at city speeds in a similar fashion 

to its four and six-cylinder counterparts. There 

are driver-selectable engine management protocols 

that can be set to many varying requirements. 

I even preferred the standard mode, 

which like all big V8 engines, means a relaxed, 

unstressed operating manner. 

However, when sport mode is selected, there 

is a constant solid surge of power that seems 

endless in its delivery. Acceleration is vivid – a 

standstill to 100km/h time of 4.2sec is wickedly 

fast, along with a 3.2sec overtaking time 

(80km/h to 120km/h). 

What I enjoyed most about the C63S’ performance 

is the sound that accompanies its delivery. 

It is loud and there’s even a button that 

enhances more noise; a backfire on gearshift 

and throttle blip on downshift is infectious to 

listen to. 

On that subject, drive is channelled to the 

rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic 

transmission. It is a direct shift-type and how 

it harnesses so much power and torque yet 

arranges the gears so smoothly amazes me. 

There are steering-wheel-mounted paddles 

for the enthusiastic driver, and management 

protocols, which quickly identify throttle 

percentage. 

The C63S cabriolet sits on huge rubber with 

wheels an inch smaller in diameter up front 

than those on the rear. The sport specification 

Michelin Pilot tyres (255/35 x 19in and 285/30 

x 20in) have huge grip, yet they are constantly 

tested when the power goes on. Thankfully, the 

traction control system is as good as any I’ve 

experienced before; there’s just a little bit of 

freedom within the system so that the driver

can experience the feel of grip loss at the 

rear under hard acceleration, but the squirm 

and oversteer is moderated without sudden 

intervention. 

One of the benefits of quality tyres is the feel 

through the steering, the C63S cabriolet has 

accurate turn-in along with strong feel – you 

can point and clip apexes delightfully. It must 

be said, though, the C-Class in this form is so 

competent it makes driving easy, the suspension 

is informative and that creates an involving 

driving experience. It is also rigid within 

the body structure. 

Like most premium manufacturers, Mercedes- 

Benz and AMG haven’t lost sight of the need 

to look after the environment, and even 

though the engine has big cylinders to feed, 

the fuel usage statistics are still realistic. 

Mercedes-Benz claims a 9.4-litre per 100km 

(30mpg) combined cycle average. At 100km/h I 

recorded an 8l/100km (35mpg) instantaneous 

readout along with a 11.2l/100km (27mpg) 

average over five days. 

However, a buyer who chooses C63S specification 

in any vehicle will understand that the 

quad-camshaft V8 likes to be released and fuel 

economy wouldn’t be a priority. 

At $189,000 the C-Class cab in this form 

comes at a premium price but it is chock full 

of goodies and, as you would expect from 

Mercedes-Benz, it wants for nothing. 

I’ve been quite spoilt recently with a lot of 

German product filtering through the press 

fleet – as well as soft and hard-tops from 

other brands – serving to prove the convertible 

market is showing no sign of dwindling. 

I’ve long said Christchurch doesn’t have the 

best weather for open-air motoring and I stick 

to that statement; that being the case, the 

coupe would be the car for me, but for anyone 

who gets to experience that amazing engine, 

there’s a chance they will be simply over-awed.

I’m on one of my favourite high country roads. The stretch 

includes short straights mixed with a combination of tight and 

open corners. 

The car is responding delightfully to the way it is being steered 

and I’m being entertained by its handling and balance. I’m 

thinking that this could be the best evaluation drive I’ve had for 

2017. 

No, I’m not driving a sports car or anything exotic. In fact, I’m 

in one of New Zealand’s budget models – a Mazda2 to be 

exact. 

The reason why I’m so smitten is not because the Mazda2 is 

fast or exciting, its performance is honest and it works hard 

to please through the chassis, but because the series is priced 

for affordability and in terms of all-round value for money it’s a 

real attention-grabber. 

Not only does it drive purposefully at all speeds, you also get a 

lot of kit on Mazda2, and for a car that lists under $30k, it is a 

rather special purchase. 

The test car was in Limited specification and it sits at $29,695; 

an entry-level GLX variant comes in at $21,945 while a GSX 

comes in at $24,945. I’m picking the GSX would be the car for 

me but the Limited variant does get a lot of kit, features which 

are included elsewhere in the Mazda line-up. 

Such are the changes for 2017, the Mazda2 could certainly be 

described as having a facelift. There aren’t a lot of cosmetic 

enhancements, but there are new side mirrors, grille and wheel 

changes. 

The Automotive Lamp Specialists 

On the inside the dash panel graphics have been enhanced for 

clarity, there’s a new centre console display, while trim materials 

have been upgraded. 

More importantly, there have been chassis changes to promote 

the driving experience and that’s what I noticed during the 

time I tackled the exit from the Waimakariri River gorge. The 

most significant development is the addition of G-Vectoring 

Control, which improves handling and stability especially during 

emergency avoidance manoeuvres. 

In Limited specification that also combines with a suite of 

other collision avoidance technologies such as smart city brake 

support and driver attention alert. 

Together, these functions provide the Mazda2 driver with 

confidence at all speeds. You don’t need to be moving along at 

pace; in everyday situations the newcomer feels in control of 

itself and has a decisive feel from behind the wheel, which will 

lure drivers of all ages. 

That is the reason why I like the car’s balance so much. It just 

feels right from behind the wheel and you feel so much part of 

the car. That’s an aspect Mazda is building into all of its range, 

and along with the superb feel of quality that accompanies 

it, it’s no surprise that the new Mazda2 appeals,as does the 

company’s enture line-up in general. I’ve driven several from 

the manufacturer recently, and it’s fair to say the company has 

upped the ante in terms of desirability. 

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, 

which drives out of a conventional six-speed automatic 

transmission. I mention that because Mazda hasn’t developed 

its turbocharging techniques any further and I guess it doesn’t

need to. It claims 81kW and 141Nm from the engine, and with 

a 4.9l/100km (57mpg) combined cycle fuel usage claim the 

figures are healthy. 

There is also a sport mode the driver can activate for busier 

engine behaviour, and if you couple that to a manual sequential 

gearshift function, the sporty feel of Mazda2 will come into its 

own. 

I left the evaluation car mostly in normal mode and enjoyed 

the interaction between engine and gearbox. It is a traditional 

way of driving and for that reason I warmed to it, changes are 

crisp and smooth and the engine stays on song. Even though 

the area of maximum torque is high at 4000rpm, the Mazda2 is 

light and it doesn’t take a lot of energy to move it quickly (0-

Next year is open and now is the time to start planning your 

2018 holiday, says Hornby House of Travel’s Paula Waldeck. 

“Families planning overseas holidays in 2018 are encouraged to 

book early to get the best deals,” Paula says. 

“The school holidays are the busiest and most expensive time 

to travel, so by booking early people can reduce the cost.” 

Paula and her expert team at HOT have plenty of suggestions 

for customers looking for an overseas holiday that won’t break 

the bank. 

“For example, the Gold Coast is great value for money,” Paula 

says, “and anywhere in the South Pacific is also a good choice 

for warmth during the New Zealand winter, plus there is usually 

no time difference so that makes it easier with younger 

children.” 

For families with teenagers, she suggests a trip to Vietnam and 

Cambodia, where they can learn about different cultures and 

the different ways of life in that region. 

For those who are excited by the idea of river or ocean cruising 

and calling into exotic places, HOT suggests one of the 

many multi-destination cruises on offer. 

“There are ships for all budgets and so many itineraries to 

choose from around the world,” Paula says. 

Europe is always one of the most popular destinations for Kiwi 

travellers, with Croatia currently at the top of the list. Paula 

suggests island hopping on a small cruise ship around the Adriatic 

Sea with a stay in the ever-popular Dubrovnik. 

Italy is another highly favoured country to visit, and there is a 

range of itinerary ideas for travellers going there, including villa 

stays, cycling and walking tours, foodie tours or a Vespa tour 

around quaint Italian villages. 

For first-time travellers, the team at HOT Hornby suggests a 

multi-country guided journey. 

“Travellers get to enjoy local experiences, and they have a 

good balance of time with the group and time to do things on 

their own. This is a great way to get a taste of Europe,” Paula 

says.

Dusting off the Elvis 

track for a good cause 


ELVIS WILL be in Hornby on Saturday 

to raise funds for poliomyelitis. 

The Rotary Club of Avonhead is putting 

on Another Great Variety Tribute Show 

to raise money for people suffering from 

poliomyelitis – a crippling and potentially 

deadly infectious disease. 

Organiser Graeme Wallis said the 

money raised from the show will go to 

PolioPlus, an initiative started by Rotary 

International. 

PolioPlus is helping immunise people 

in the hope of ending poliomyelitis worldwide. 

“It exists in five countries at the moment 

– Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, 

Nigeria and Syria – which spells out the 

word PAINS. It is diminishing rapidly but 

Rotary International have got some huge 

support, which means if we raise $5000 

they will double it,” Mr Wallis said. 

The show will have music from Elvis 

Presley, Neil Diamond and John Rowles 

as well as dancing. 

Mr Wallis said the show is special 

because of how much support the community 

has given. 

He said this year was the first time the 

Rotary Club of Avonhead offered the musicians 

some money for their talents. 

“We made the decision that each player 

would get $100. Anyway, when I went up 

to them, immediately three of them said 

‘oh no it’s alright, I don’t want anything,’”

August, a brave group of 20 students shaved 

their hair to raise funds as well as awareness 

for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. 

This organisation ensures all individuals and 

families who are sadly faced with Leukaemia 

& Blood Cancer are well supported. The

Both our Boys and Girls Table Tennis teams 

competed this year in the NZ Secondary 

Schools Championships held in Palmerston 

North. The Boys won the Open A grade, 

beating Auckland Grammar in the final. The 

Girls won the Girls grade, beating Macleans 

College in the final. 

This is the first time our Table Tennis teams 

have attended the National tournament, and 

possibly the first time in the history of this 

tournament that one school has taken out both 

titles.

SPRING ONION PANCAKES 

Ingredients 

250g Plain flour, plus extra for 

dusting 

80 ml Boiling water 

70 ml Cold water 

2 Tbsp Vegetable oil 

1 bunch Spring onion, finely 

chopped 

1 tsp Sesame seeds 

Directions 

Put the flour in a bowl and 

add the boiling water, stirring 

with chopsticks. This is called 

‘burning’ the flour. Give it a mix 

and once it has cooled enough, 

continue mixing with your hands. 

Add the cold water, a quarter at 

a time, and continue mixing. 

When mixed thoroughly, take 

the dough out of the bowl and 

knead on a flour-covered bench. 

You may need to add more flour 

as you knead. Continue kneading 

until the dough is shiny and your 

hands and the bench are clear of 

dough. 

Roll the dough into a ball and 

place in a bowl covered with cling 

film. Seat aside for about half an 

hour. Take a piece of dough about 

the size of your fist and roll it out 

on the bench into a circle about 

15cm in diameter. Spread some 

vegetable oil over the dough, then 

sprinkle over the chopped spring 

onion. Sprinkle over the sesame 

seeds. 

Roll the pancake into a tight 

cylinder, then coil it around into 

a circle (like a caterpillar rolling 

itself into a circle). With a rolling 

pin, flatten this circle into a 

pancake again. 

Add oil to your frying pan and 

heat to a medium-high heat. Add 

the pancake to the frying pan and 

fry until golden, then flip and 

cook the other side until golden 

and crisp. Serve as a side dish 

with chilli oil or chilli sauce or 

your favourite Asian-inspired dip. 

Also great at breakfast time. 

APPLE AND PORK MINCE 

PINWHEELS 

Ingredients 

500g Pork mince 

2 tsp Sesame oil 

1 tsp Chicken stock, powder 

1 tsp Celery salt 

2 tsp Fennel seeds 

2 Tbsp Fresh parsley 

1 tsp Fresh dill 

2 cloves Garlic 

1 Onion 

½ Ambrosia Apple, finely diced 

with skin on 

2 Eggs, one for egg wash 

750g Flaky puff pastry, ready 

rolled 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C 

fan bake. 

Combine the first 10 

ingredients in a bowl. 

Mix in one egg. 

Divide mixture evenly onto 

four sheets of pastry, taking care 

to ensure you leave some space 

on each edge (about 2.5cm) for 

easy rolling. 

Lightly beat remaining egg for 

egg wash and brush the edges to 

help seal the pinwheel. 

Roll each sheet from the long 

end and cut each into four 

pinwheels with a sharp knife. 

Place on baking paper on 

oven tray and egg wash the 

pinwheels. 

Sprinkle on sesame seeds. 

Bake for 30min until golden.

Melanoma Deadlier 

Than Road Fatalities 

Summer is around the corner, and it brings with it the 

temptation for some to “pre-tan” using artificial UV 

tanning equipment; but is it really worth the risk? 

More people die from melanoma 

each year than are killed 

annually in road crashes. 

This statistic was part of 

a comprehensive submission made to 

parliament’s Health Select Committee which 

is considering outlawing sunbeds for people 

under the age of 18 years. 

The submission was made by Accuro 

Health Insurance, established in the 1970s as 

a private insurer for the public health sector. 

Today it trades as a private health insurer 

with a widespread, general membership. 

Accuro, in supporting the submission 

made by the New Zealand Dermatological 

Society, pointed to a New Zealand Cancer 

Society figure of 324 deaths from melanoma 

in 2010. According to the NZ Road Transport 

Agency there were 253 road deaths for the 12 

months to February 2014 and 303 for the 12 

months to February 2015. 

In highlighting the figure, CEO Geoff 

Annals emphasised the serious nature of 

the disease and his submission drew the 

committee’s attention to the financial, social 

and personal costs of skin cancer. 

He quoted Cancer Society figures which 

report that New Zealand, along with 

Australia, has amongst the highest melanoma 

rates in the world. In 2010 melanoma was 

the fourth most common cancer with 2,341 

registered cases and the sixth most common 

cause of death from cancer. 

The Cancer Society further reports that 

skin cancer currently costs this country 

about $123 million annually. 

Geoff Annals says research by the Centre 

for Disease Control showed the introduction 

of seat belts reduced serious crash related 

injuries and deaths by about half and banning 

artificial UV tanning services is warranted 

on the same public health grounds as the 

compulsory seat belt legislation. 

While Accuro’s submission related to a ban 

for people under 18 years, it supports the 

introduction of a total ban on commercial 

artificial UV tanning. 

“As a health insurer grounded in the public 

health sector, we are strongly committed 

to supporting the effectiveness of publicly 

funded health services and better health 

outcomes for all New Zealanders,” Geoff 

Annals says. 

A leading New Zealand dermatologist, Dr 

Louise Reiche, who also made submissions 

to the Health Select Committee, says she’s 

treating many young people, especially 

women in their 20s and 30s, with melanomas 

resulting from commercial sunbed exposure. 

She says clients typically lie naked on 

their sunbeds and expose skin to radiation 

emitted from UV lamps which can be up to 

13 times greater than the peak summer sun. 

She’s now treating people with cancer of the 

genital skin which is more vulnerable to skin 

cancer development. 

“The medical profession is run off their 

feet with people presenting themselves with 

skin cancers causing the public health system 

to be overwhelmed,” Dr Reiche says. 

“The waiting list is three to four months 

for urgent cases and, during the delay, the 

cancers are growing. This results in poorer 

health outcomes and more complex and 

expensive procedures.”
