School sends capsule into future
ON THE eve of Villa Maria
College’s 100 th birthday, students
have been working on a very
forward-thinking project – a
time capsule to be opened in
2068.
Teacher Mikaela Hood has
been working with her students
to decide what items should be
included in the capsule.
“Two year 12 history classes
were studying historical sources
and as part of
their learning
look into
different time
capsules around
the world
and consider
what and how
Mikaela
Hood
historians
could use these
sources,” Ms
Hood said.
She said the idea of the college
creating a time capsule evolved
from this.
Year 9 social studies classes
have been involved in collecting
the items to be included.
Year 9E photographed the
school, collected artefacts
and asked principal Deborah
Brosnahan to write a letter to the
school’s future principal.
Year 9G wrote letters
discussing school life and their
experiences at the college.
“I like the idea of putting
letters into the time capsule
explaining what our lives are
FORWARD THINKING: (Back) – Monica Fahey, Sophie Houghton, Grace Prendergast, Madison
Clifton, Rebecca Thwaites, Molly Emms, Neve Mangan, Amy Buckmaster and Paris Wardle.
Bownes, Olivia Glen, Ella-Rose Newman and Sarah Williams
like today, to be opened and read
in 2068,” year 9 student Sarah
Williams said.
Along with letters detailing
the present day life of a high
schooler, the classes included a
2017 college magazine, school
tie, photographs, canteen menu,
centennial pin and a school
swimming cap, among other
items.
“I like that I’ll still be alive
when it’s opened again in 50
years,” year 9 student Paris Wardle
said.
Villa Maria College will mark
a century of Catholic education
in February.
Opened and staffed by the
Sisters of Mercy in 1918, the
college has come a long way
from the 14 pupils enrolled on its
first day.
Registrations are now open for
the Villa Maria College centennial
weekend on February 16-18.
The events planned include
a family carnival day, sophisticated
ball and special centennial
mass.
The college’s history will
be told, with the launch of a
book written by historian and
author Sean Brosnahan, and a
photographic exhibition for all
to view.
