18 Tuesday May 10 2016 The pink socks may have helped Waihora when they played against Prebbleton last Saturday. The Waihora senior men’s team traded their white and black socks for pink and black to honour their mums for Mother’s Day, encouraging many mothers to watch. The Waihora under 7s all girl team went along to the game, saluting the senior Waihora players with a guard of honour with the help of their mothers. The final score was Waihora 33 Prebbleton 3. SELWYN TIMES Tuesday May 10 2016 19 Poland trip for hammer thrower COMPETITION: Lincoln High School and Ellesmere College went head-to-head in the McDonald’s Thompson Trophy and Whelan Trophy. Lincoln High beat Ellesmere College 63-39 in the Thompson Trophy match (above). PRESSURE: The round one Whelan Trophy match went into overtime and Ellesmere beat Lincoln 60-56. PHOTOS: Canterbury Basketball Association A gymnast turned hammer thrower from Lincoln University will compete in Poland. Lauren Bruce, 19, is heading to Bydgoszcz to take part in the World Under-20 Athletic Championships. Bruce bettered the international qualifying distance at the nationals and recent Australian championships and will now represent New Zealand as she competes against others from around the world. She took up hammer throwing five years ago and her 58m throw has her ranked as the second nationally and to throw that far she practices up to five times a week. Bruce juggles practice with studying full time for a Bachelor of Science, majoring in food science. Getting into the team has been a goal for several years and is looking forward to competing. “It is a privilege to be able to have the opportunity to represent New Zealand on the world stage and I am looking forward to the experience and the challenges it will bring,” she said. Bruce is heading over to Poland on a month long trip in July to compete and hopes to bring home a gold.
