SELWYN HAS the highest median 

house price in the Canterbury 

region. 

The Real Estate Institute of New 

Zealand says Selwyn’s median house 

price has reached $550,000 showing 

the market is continuing to grow. 

Changes have been made to the 

way REINZ data is collected with 

regions that were formerly reported 

together, separated for more accuracy. 

Previously, Selwyn was included 

in South Canterbury’s data. 

The latest May report said the 

median price was up five per cent in 

comparison to last year. 

Agent Jackie Derrick of Matson 

and Allan Real Estate Ltd said there 

is a healthy demand in all price 

brackets and she is seeing a continuing 

list of Christchurch buyers coming 

to Rolleston. 

“Rolleston, in regards to Selwyn, 

is the area where there is more 

demand and the boom is significant 

. . . people can see the growth or 

Rolleston is also being supported by 

additional infrastructure out here,” 

she said. 

She said Leeston has become more 

popular and is driven by 

the affordability of houses.

said while in the main centres, 

including Lincoln, Rolleston, West 

Melton and Prebbleton, activity 

levels are still good, the market 

for the outlining areas such as 

Darfield and Leeston are becoming

Heartfelt bid to keep teens safe 


PARENTS OF two of the three 

teenagers killed in a high-speed 

crash have reached out to high 

school students in a bid to 

get them to think about the 

consequences of their road 

safety choices. 

Samuel Drost, Cole Hull and 

Lily Moore – all aged 15 – died 

late on Christmas Day, when a 

car they were passengers in failed 

to take a corner and crashed into 

trees near Southbridge. 

The 14-year-old unlicensed 

driver has pleaded guilty to 

causing the deaths of the three 

teenagers as well as causing injury 

to a fourth passenger in the 

car at the Christchurch Youth 

Court recently. 

As part of a road safety 

programme, a moving talk 

from parents Marcus Moore 

and Tracey Drost was made at 

Lincoln High School recently. 

RYDA, run by the Road Safety 

Education Ltd is designed for 16 

to 18-year-old students aiming 

to change the way they think 

about road safety.

can happen as many of them 

were off-course because of the 

connection,” he said.

High, while Lily was a student 

at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and 

Cole went to Ellesmere College. 

Mr Rout said the time since 

the accident had been tough 

for a number students and the 

school has support in place.

SKATE PARK CONSULTATION 

The district council will consult 

with the public about a proposal 

for a skate park near the outdoor 

gym equipment at the Lincoln 

Event Centre. The consultation will 

be held this Thursday and Friday 

outside the centre between 3.30 and 

4.30pm. 

BURGLARY CHARGES 

A 19 and 20-year-old have been 

charged with burglaries in Doyleston 

and Leeston. Challenge Leeston 

was broken into in December and 

auto-repair shop Jacks Service 

Centre in January. Cigarettes 

were taken. Senior Constable Lois 

Williscroft said the offenders will 

appear in the Christchurch District 

Court in a couple of weeks. Selwyn 

Times reported in October there has 

been a trend in recent months of 

burglaries between the hours of 3am 

and 5am at petrol stations around 

Canterbury with only cigarettes 

being taken. 

CORRECTION 

The Selwyn Times (May 2) reported 

a special general meeting was held 

at the Templeton RSA to vote for the 

organisation to move to Rolleston. 

This is incorrect. The organisation 

voted on a feasibility study to look 

into the move, not to actually move. 

Selwyn Times apologises for the

House prices top in Canty

The overall Canterbury region 

median of $447,000 is 2.9 per 

cent compared to April last year. 

In the report, REINZ regional 

director Jim Davis said the market

with great interest the article on 

the development of a new RSA 

clubrooms in Rolleston. 

What a golden opportunity 

to develop an RSA bowling club 

along the lines of the RSL bowling 

clubs, which operate in dozens 

of towns and cities all across 

Australia. 

With a projected population of 

11,800 in 2017 and a growth rate 

of around 8 per cent per annum, 

that gives us a population of just 

under 15,000 by the year 2020. 

To have a “sports” club as such 

would be such an advantage to 

our town where people could 

gather to enjoy a night out for 

dinner and a show of sorts. 

Rolleston is the third biggest 

town in Canterbury, with only 

Ashburton and Rangiora bigger. 

We have no outdoor bowls club, 

so I feel this is the opportunity 

to set this up and even make it 

the headquarters for bowls Selwyn, 

which currently has nine 

bowls clubs. Food for thought.

WATER: There are concerns about how water issues are 

managed in district. 

on May 9 gave the impression 

that I believed Environment 

Canterbury should aim for 800 

tonnes to be the load limit for 

nitrogen going into Te Waihora/ 

Lake Ellesmere per year. This 

isn’t my view. 

However, I and most Selwyn 

residents, would reasonably expect 

the limit set under the new 

Canterbury Water Management 

Strategy targets to be lower than 

the amount entering it now – 

estimated at 3200 tonnes/year. 

I’ve only recently been made 

aware that the new limit set 

by ECan is 4800 tonnes/year. 

A whopping 1600 tonnes/year 

more than it is now. 

This is a cruel joke on the 

ratepayers and residents of 

Canterbury – the second most 

polluted lake in New Zealand is 

set to become much, much more 

polluted. Unbelievable.

Port Hills fire risk plan 

A NEW plan has been released 

to assist in Selwyn’s recovery 

following the Port Hills fire in 

February. 

A meeting was held for property 

owners in the Port Hills 

area in late March to discuss 

how the risk of fires in area 

could be reduced in the future. 

Property owners provided 

feedback at this meeting and 

through district council staff 

which has been 

used to helped 

to develop the 

draft recovery 

plan. 

Mayor Sam 

Broughton 

(left) said the 

district council 

has been working with families 

affected by the fire since February 

and the document is focused 

on continuing to support them 

in the future. 

“It also looks at actions that 

can be taken to restore the built 

and natural environment and 

reduce the risk of fire affecting 

this area in the future,” he said. 

Building safety inspections at 

a number of properties has been 

completed by the district council’s 

building consents team. 

Future actions are identified in 

the plan. 

OUT OF CONTROL: Lincoln volunteers help prepare a 

helicopter to fight the Port Hills fire. 

These include setting up a 

facilitated building consent process 

for people who are planning 

to carry out repairs or build new 

houses following fire damage, 

with consents being prioritised. 

Some geotechnical assessment 

has already been undertaken on 

properties, and further work is 

underway in Early Valley Rd to 

address the risk of rock fall. 

Further information will 

also be provided to property 

owners on how to reduce fire 

hazard. 

The development of Selwyn’s 

plan has been co-ordinated with 

the recently released Christchurch 

City Council plan. 

The discussion document and 

recovery plan aims to support 

objectives including homes are 

rebuilt in a timely manner and 

effected property and landowners 

understand how various 

agencies responded to the fires.

Cycleway talks start 

with landowners 


DISCUSSIONS ARE under way 

with Leeston landowners as 

the district council plots a new 

cycleway between Leeston and 

Doyleston. 

The cycleway along Leeston Rd 

will cost $204,000. 

A link between the 

two communities was 

put into the annual 

budget for 2016/2017. 

Negotiations over a 

suitable off-road route 

are under way with 

a number of affected 

parties. 

A district council 

spokeswoman said any 

consenting requirements 

or affected parties will be 

identified at a later stage. 

The district council has not yet 

confirmed when the designs will 

be made available. 

Doyleston Community 

Committee member Jack 

Pearcy welcomed the cycleway 

plan. 

He said the road between 

Leeston and Doyleston is 

not safe for cyclists and pedestrians. 

“The last thing is you want

because of the wind reaction of 

a car going past you 100km/h or 

a big side of truck that blows you 

onto the grass,” he said. 

Mr Pearcy said plans are 

progressing quietly in the background.

Plan to boost creek’s water quality 


IN THE 1980s a spawning 

survey done by the then New 

Zealand Acclimatisation Society 

showed there were 357 trout 

spawning redds in the lowland 

drain Snake Creek. 

As of last year there were only 

57. 

North Canterbury Fish and 

Game wants to change these 

figures, proposing a restoration 

project that aims to turn Snake 

Creek into a living 

stream. 

The creek is 

one of three 

that makes up 

the Silverstream 

Catchment 

which flows

River. 

The creek begins 

upstream 

of the Chamberlains Ford and 

flows out to Selwyn River above 

Coes Ford. 

Parts of the project includes 

Fish and Game setting up sediment

and providing a pool habitat. 

Natural features will be placed 

strategically along the stream 

while gravels on Snake Creek 

will be turned over mechanically 

following consultation 

with iwi.

too wide, has low velocity, lacks 

diversity and is dominated by a

She said while the water quality 

is considered to be okay for 

swimming, by the time you get 

to Coes Ford the water quality 

has decreased a lot. 

If successful the project will 

not only benefit trout and native 

species, it will improve water 

quality in places including Coes 

Ford. 

The whole project is expected

between $50,000-$60,000 over 

the next three years. 

It was decided the zone committee 

would supply a letter of 

support and encourage ECan’s 

to support the project through 

the long-term plan funding.

said while he thought the 

project would be the best thing 

to happen to Snake Creek he 

wants to ensure the runanga 

is involved in the decisionmaking. 

If enough funds are raised, the 

project will start in 2018. 

Two more

SELWYN DISTRICT Council has 

extended chief executive David 

Ward’s contract for another two 

years. 

“Councillors employ only one 

role – the chief executive – this 

role is responsible for the delivery 

of all council policies, projects, 

and plans for the future through 

the other staff,” said Mayor Sam 

Broughton. 

“David has helped successfully 

lead a number of council projects 

which help make Selwyn a great 

place to live. The extension of Mr 

Ward’s contract reflects the positive 

work of the council and staff 

in our community.” 

“Selwyn continues to face a 

number of challenges brought on 

by growth, changing community 

expectations, asset renewal, and 

Government legislation,” Mr 

Broughton said. 

He said councillors have high 

expectations of their chief executive 

and staff over the next three 

years. 

Legally, the chief executive’s 

contract may be extended for two 

years. Mr Ward was appointed to 

this role in 2014.

Car thrills young Jonty 

FIVE-YEAR-OLD Jonty 

Payne has congenital scoliosis. 

He finds it hard to play with 

his schoolmates from a 

wheelchair, and can’t run around, 

as he fast runs out of oxygen. 

But volunteer charity Gobabygo 

had the answer and specially 

adapted an electric ride-in car for 

the Templeton youngster.

Rotary branches paid for the 

cost of the toy BMW, and supplied 

volunteers at the handover, 

at Christchurch BMW, in Manchester 

St. 

Gobabygo board member 

Bruce Jackson said it was one of 

three cars handed over on the 

day. 

He said Jonty was “all over it, 

even doing figure eights around 

the sales area.” 

Mr Jackson thanked the Rotary 

members who turned out to help, 

including car builder and fitter 

John Harrington, who was ready 

and able to make on-site adjustments 

when the children needed 

it. 

He also thanked the staff 

of Christchurch BMW, who 

cleared a space in the showroom, 

and proved very helpful on the 

day.

Good start to battery 

recycling project 

A NEW battery recycling 

scheme has yielded more than 

43kg of household batteries at a 

Selwyn supermarket. 

A scheme initiated by the 

Lincoln Environment Trust and 

set up at New World Lincoln is 

thought to be the first battery recycling 

station at a supermarket 

in the country. 

The trust’s project manager 

Dave Fitzjohn said the station 

provides the public with easy 

means of ensuring their used batteries 

are disposed of responsibly. 

The project was supported by 

New World Lincoln owner Kyle 

Burnett who provided a space 

to trial the concept and the 

district council’s waste manager 

Andrew Boyd. 

Sustainable Initiative Fund 

Trust general manager Maria 

Wake also helped fund the startup 

costs of the project. 

“It’s great to see a problematic 

material in the waste stream 

being tackled through a 

community-led initiative,” Mr 

Boyd said. 

The batteries were delivered 

to Ecotech Services where they

reality for a primary school in

Clearview Primary School 

held a ceremony celebrating 

the opening of its new $135,000 

playground yesterday. 

The school’s principal Rob 

Rush said the playground designed 

for pupils aged between 

nine and 15 was largely funded 

by a successful fete the school 

held last year.

“It is going to be long-lasting, 

children in 20 years will still be 

playing on this,” Mr Rush said.

IT WAS an evening of dance and 

festivity with Ellesmere College 

celebrating its annual school

Nearly 200 students along with 

22 staff attended the ball recently 

at Riccarton Park. It was themed 

‘Travel – The World Awaits.’ 

The night started off with a 

buffet dinner and when the celebrations 

finished students were 

returned to Leeston in buses.

Darfield High School and Mount 

Hutt College.

a great evening and the students

The college’s netball team is 

now planning to organise a “ball

Port Hills Fire 

Recovery Continues 

Work to help affected Port Hills residents and assist with the recovery of the area is continuing. 

A draft Discussion Document and Recovery Plan for the Selwyn area affected by the fire is now 

available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay, with comments on the draft plan open 

until Friday 26 May. 

A meeting was held for property owners in the Port Hills area in late March to discuss how the risk 

of fires in the area could be reduced in the future. Property owners provided valuable feedback 

which has been used to help develop Selwyn’s draft recovery plan. 

The Council’s Recovery Team is continuing to work with families affected by the Port Hills Fire by 

offering assistance and advice as well as helping with advocacy to other organisations. Reseeding 

work has been coordinated and carried out in this area by the community. A number of skips have 

been placed in the Port Hills area by the Council to make clean-up work easier for families. 

Aerial re-seeding has also been undertaken on some of the private land within the Christchurch 

City area, with volunteers also helping to clean up rubbish in the Sugarloaf to Cass Peak area. 

The New Zealand Fire Service and the National Rural Fire Authority have appointed Australian 

Firefighter Alan Goodwin to lead the fire operational review. Alan has 25 years’ experience 

including working as the Chief Fire Officer for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and 

Planning in Victoria. He will be joined by New Zealand Fire Service National Operation Efficiency 

Manager Trevor Brown and Auckland Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Bryan Cartelle on the 

review. An operational review is carried out after all major fires. It is hoped the findings will be 

released in around October this year. 

Stay bright, use your lights! 

Winter can bring snow, ice, fog, rain and less daylight. In these conditions you need to ensure you 

switch your lights on to make sure you’re visible. The Road Code says that you must use your vehicle 

headlights from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise and at any other time you can’t 

clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away. 

“Most times it is very obvious when you need your lights on, but outside the guidelines given in the 

road code, there are a number of other circumstances where using your lights will improve your visibility

Safety Coordinator. 

“When there is fog, it is raining or where there is the potential for sunstrike, it can be more difficult to see 

other vehicles. Using your lights on dip is the best way to ensure you are seen,” Mrs Tinning says. 

Many people drive with their park lights on but these are only designed for use when a vehicle is 

stationary and are not clearly visible from a distance. 

Increasing following distances and taking more care to check ahead before passing in these conditions 

is also essential as if other cars do not have their lights on they can be hard to see. Using your lights 

will greatly increase your chances of seeing and being seen by other vehicles. 

On the roads this week 

Road maintenance will take place on Auchenflower Road with traffic 

controls in place. Footpath reconstruction work will take place on 

School Lane in Kirwee. 

Road widening work is continuing on Jones Road between 

Weedons Ross Road and the Lyttelton Port Company until mid- 

June. The road will remain open, but may be reduced to one lane 

at times with traffic delays expected. This work is occurring now 

in order to be completed prior to the NZ Transport Agency starting 

work on a new Motorway interchange at Weedons Ross Road. 

Maddisons Road is suggested as an alternative route to Jones 

Road at peak times. 

Road closures – Manse/High Streets, Aylesbury and 

Hoskyns Roads 

The intersection of High Street and Manse Road in Leeston will 

be closed this week. A turning bay is being created and the road 

then resealed. The intersection should reopen by Saturday 21 May. 

Please detour via Station Road and Cunningham Street while the 

closure is in place. 

Aylesbury Road will be partially closed between 9am and 4pm 

on Friday 19 May to allow the NZ Defence Force to carry out tree 

removal. The road will be closed one way to traffic travelling from 

State Highway 1 to Burdons Road (but open the other way). The 

road is open both ways from Burdons Road west. A detour will 

operate via Walkers Road. 

Hoskyns Road will be closed from 9am-6pm on Saturday 21 May 

(between Link Drive and Jones Road) to allow splitter islands to be 

installed. A detour will operate via Link Drive. 

Christchurch Southern Motorway extension 

Weedons Ross Road will be open to a one-way system flowing from 

Main South Road to Jones Road from next week. Weedons Road 

from Main South Road through to Levi Road is a one-way system, in 

place from early next week. From as early as Monday 15 May 2017, 

Waterholes Road will be a one-way system from Hamptons Road to 

833 Waterholes Road running south towards Robinsons Road with 

detours in place. 

New dog park planned for 

Leeston 

A new dog park is planned for Leeston and is expected to be ready 

in the spring time. A 1.8 hectare dog park is planned in the area 

of Council land between the entrance to the A & P Showgrounds 

and the land leased to the Ellesmere Heritage Park. The area will 

be fenced and will include planting, dog exercise equipment and 

a small pond. The project to establish the new park has been 

promoted by the Leeston Township Committee.

Annual Plan submissions and survey comments closed on 3 May. 

Mayor Sam Broughton says the Council was pleased to receive a significant number of submissions 

and survey comments on the Annual Plan. 

“This year we tried to offer some different options which made it easier for people to share their views 

on the topics we were consulting on in the Annual Plan. We were really pleased to get a wide range 

of people participating in the consultation and taking part in our survey or sharing their thoughts with 

Councillors when they visited local supermarkets and other facilities.” 

185 submissions were received on the Annual Plan, along with 241 survey comments. Councillors will 

be reviewing these along with the comments received on the Council’s Facebook page and in person. 

Submission hearings are being held this week on Thursday from 10am-8pm and on Friday from 9am at 

the Council’s Rolleston Headquarters. Members of the public are welcome to listen to submissions. 

Submissions and survey comments showed strong support for carrying out planning work for a new 

pool at Selwyn Aquatic Centre, completing further footpath extensions and developing a health hub. 

Submission and survey comments showed a range of views about introducing a standard stormwater 

rate and changing library opening hours.

Welcome to another exciting year of 1st XV Rugby. In 2017 Lincoln High School has combined with Akaroa 

Area School, Darfield High School and Ellesmere College and entered a team in the UC Championship. By 

doing so the team has been strengthened, Club rugby will still have enough players for their teams, and 

players that should be playing at this level have not had to leave the school or community of their choice 

to be able to play at a level that is appropriate for their talent. 

The competition has already begun, with the start date being April 29th. The team was excited to play 

their first game at Darfield High School, although all remaining home games are likely to be played at 

Lincoln High School.

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe 

work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the 

wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that 

in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, 

but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or 

on to the sports field? 

not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place 

can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators 

does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy 

machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance 

service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid 

course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. 

take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high 

risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that 

they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability 

to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course 

of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium 

risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a 

spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight 

hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 

26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in 

fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most 

common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children 

are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in 

australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents 

or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far 

behind those in the workplace. 

The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 

6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk 

environments. This course covers many of the skills required to 

deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result 

in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes 

such as motor vehicle accidents. 

if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask 

your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the 

course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. 

Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your 

location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is 

up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where 

it is located.

Red admiral butterflies on the decline 

Mike Bowie is

specialises in 

entomology 

(insects 

and other 

invertebrates). Each 

week he introduces a 

new species found in 

his backyard at Lincoln. 

His column aims to raise 

public awareness of 

biodiversity, the variety of 

living things around us 

Kahu kura, or ‘red cloak’, 

is the endemic butterfly 

commonly known as the red 

admiral (vanessa gonerilla 

gonerilla). 

It is a medium-sized butterfly 

with a wingspan of about 

55mm, slightly larger than the 

yellow admiral. 

The predominant host plant 

is ongaonga, the tree nettle 

(urtica ferox), although other 

nettles are also consumed. 

Green barrel-shaped eggs 

with nine vertical ribs are laid 

by females singly on leaf tips 

or stinging hairs. 

The long stinging hairs on 

ongaonga can inflict a painful 

sting that can last for several

admiral utilise this by rolling 

themselves in the leaves for 

protection. 

Larvae progress though five 

instars or moults, reaching a 

length of about 36mm before 

pupating. 

Adults are most commonly 

seen in summer and over winter 

as adults. However, they 

can fly on warmer winter days. 

The adults are nectar feeders 

on a range of species, including 

koromiko and buddleja, 

but have been observed on tree 

trunk seepages. 

Anecdotal evidence suggests 

red admiral numbers have declined 

since the establishment 

of two parasitic wasps that 

attack the pupae. One parasite, 

an Australian species, was first 

recorded in New Zealand 1915, 

while a second species was 

introduced in 1930 to control 

the cabbage white butterfly. 

UNIQUE: Kahu kura, or 

‘red cloak’, is the endemic 

butterfly commonly known 

as the red admiral. 

SHARP: Larvae of the red 

admiral roll in these long 

stinging ongaonga hairs. 

Research by Lincoln University 

entomologists found 

up to 82 per cent and 17 per 

cent parasitism of red admiral 

pupae by these two species 

respectively. 

Loss of habitat and its nettle 

host plant is also a possible 

factor in the decline of red 

admirals.

Former Lincoln Uni 

student selected for 

international summit 

A young woman from Canterbury and 

former Lincoln University student is one of 

two Kiwi candidates selected to represent 

New Zealand at a summit focused on 

solving one of the world’s most important 

issues – how to feed a growing population. 

Christchurch’s Jemima Snook (24) and 

Beth Hampton (21) from Matamata will 

join 100 other delegates from around the 

world in Brussels, Belgium, October 9-13. 

Hailing from 49 countries and aged 

between 18 and 25, the chosen delegates 

share a passion for agriculture and a 

vision of a world without hunger. During 

the summit, they will share their diverse 

experiences and work together to generate 

innovative, sustainable and actionable 

solutions to global food security challenges. 

Their mission is to come up with concrete 

new ideas that can drive agricultural 

progress across the globe and be put into 

practice back home. 

Bayer, together with partners Groene 

Kring (GK) and Fédération des Jeunes 

Agriculteurs (FJA), is hosting the summit, 

which has the theme of “Feeding a 

Hungry Planet.” It aims to address the UN 

Sustainability Goals of ending hunger, 

achieving food security and promoting 

sustainable agriculture. 

Jemima says she is “honoured” to be 

representing New Zealand at the summit. 

“Coming from Lincoln University I have 

many friends who are great advocates for the 

agricultural industry. The opportunity to 

attend the summit is an amazing chance to 

share ideas with other young leaders, grow 

my leadership skills and understand more 

about how New Zealand can contribute to 

solving issues of food insecurity. 

“I hope that my experiences of working 

in the New Zealand agricultural industry 

will bring practical, real-life knowledge to 

discussion topics at the conference.” 

Jemima spent her early childhood on 

a dairy farm. Her passion for agriculture 

developed during her time at Lincoln 

University, where she completed a Bachelor 

of Commerce (Agriculture) majoring in 

Farm Management and Accounting. 

As a recipient of a Prime Minister’s 

scholarship for Asia, she participated in 

a Lincoln University summer school trip 

to Indonesia in 2016 where she gained an 

understanding of food security issues in a 

developing country. Jemima is currently 

working as a graduate accountant for BDO, 

Christchurch, in its agribusiness division.

Kiwis get the opportunity to attend 

international summits.

body to 

represent Rural 

Support Trusts 

Looking back 

A national body to 

represent all 14 Rural Support 

Trusts across the country has 

now been formed. 

Rural Support Trusts 

provide free and confidential 

assistance to farmers and 

growers facing challenges; 

climate, financial or personal. 

They point people in the right 

direction for further advice 

and help. 

In its first meeting the 

National Council elected 

its Chairperson, Waikato 

RST chair Neil Bateup, with 

Gavan Herlihy from Otago appointed Vice 

Chairperson. The Rural Support National 

Council will be structured as a charitable 

trust responsible to the Trusts around the 

country. 

The formation of the national body has 

delighted Minister for Primary Industries 

Nathan Guy. 

“Rural Support Trusts do fantastic work 

supporting our rural communities in tough 

times, and this new central body will make 

them more efficient and effective,” says Mr 

Guy. 

“It will provide single point of contact 

for other national organisations and the 

Government, and help the different regions 

share resources and experience. 

Rural Support Trusts operate 

independently in their areas, staffed by local 

people who know their local communities. 

Trusts have trained facilitators who 

can assist rural people with a range of 

issues. The facilitators are all local people 

who know the area and the farming or 

growing industries, and much of their 

work is helping sometimes isolated rural 

communities keep connected and build 

morale when the going is tough.

BACK IN TIME: A new view of a road at Arthur’s Pass from a point about half a 

mile above the Canterbury end of the Otira Tunnel. Before the completion of the

Onions – the must-have vegetable 

VERSATILE: Stagger plant your onions for a constant source of 

supply.

YES, I know I harp on about 

must-have vegetables and herbs. 

The problem is, once you start 

growing and enjoying homegrown 

food, the list of must-haves 

seems to grow too. But I really do 

think onions are at the top of that 

list and should be grown in every 

vegetable garden. 

In my vegetable garden I like to 

grow red onions. But I don’t stop 

there. I also stagger-plant spring 

onions, regular brown pukekohe 

longkeeper onions, pearl drop 

onions and red bunching spring 

onions. 

For the newbie gardeners 

out there, stagger planting (or 

staggering) is when you plant a 

few seedlings of the same varieties 

(ie broccoli or onions) every 

few weeks to ensure you have a 

constant supply of produce ready 

to harvest. 

You can grow onions pretty 

much anywhere in the garden – 

they also grow well in pots. But 

make sure the soil is friable (goes 

crumbly when you touch it). If 

it’s not, simply give it a good dig 

over and add a bit of compost and 

fertiliser.

onions need to be planted 10cm 

apart. And if you’re growing them

in rows, make the rows 20cm 

apart. I like to companion plant 

spinach in between the rows. Or 

you could try growing spring 

onions in between. 

They will be ready to harvest 

much earlier at around six to 

eight weeks, so will be out of the 

rows before the larger onions 

need the space. Simply, plant your 

spring onions around 4cm apart 

from the next. 

You can harvest your spring 

onions at any time. But the longer 

you leave them the bigger they 

will get until they go to seed. 

Your larger onions will take 

around 20 to 24 weeks to get 

ready and you can tell when they 

are because they start to pop right 

out of the ground. 

If they start to flower, we 

also recommend harvesting 

them as onions that have started 

to bolt or go to seed don’t store 

very well. 

Don’t worry if they’re green, 

you can still eat them.

Timing bulb flowering not an exact science

CAN BULB flowering be timed 

for special occasions? 

More often than not, this question 

is asked in relation to a wedding. 

And I can understand why 

– growing your own tulips, lilies 

or other bulbs would save money 

and look fantastic in bouquets or 

in the background of photos. 

Unfortunately, the timing of 

bulbs flowering is heavily reliant 

on nature. And, as Cyclones Cook 

and Debbie have recently reminded 

us, nature and weather can be 

fickle and hard to predict. 

So, the question of timing flowering 

for special occasions is one 

that is pretty well impossible for 

us to answer accurately. 

What I can do, is give you a bit 

more information about spring 

and summer flowering bulbs to 

help you decide whether or not 

it’s doable for your particular situation 

and region. 

Spring flowering bulbs 

In a nutshell, spring flowering 

bulbs (like tulips, hyacinths and 

daffodils) can’t just be planted 

later to make them flower later. 

Without any artificial chilling, 

these bulbs have to be planted in 

autumn (makes no difference at 

which point in autumn) as they 

require all the chilling that comes 

with winter. 

MAJESTIC: Summer bulbs such as gladioli and lilies don’t need cold weather to trigger flowering. 

Exactly when they flower will 

depend on how cold the winter is, 

how much rain there is, and how 

early or late spring comes. 

The only way to make spring 

bulbs flower later than normal is 

to plant them in pots and hold 

them in a chiller, progressively 

lowering the temperature from 9 

deg C to 0 deg C over a period of 

10 weeks. 

Then hold them at zero and 

take them from the chiller two 

to three weeks before you want 

them in full flower. This approach 

won’t work with unplanted bulbs. 

To make potted spring bulbs 

flower earlier, you can use the 

chilling method above and simply 

take them out early rather than 

late. 

But there’s only a small window 

in which you can make them 

flower earlier. Tulips can’t be 

chilled until late March because 

the immature buds inside the 

bulbs need to reach a certain 

development stage before they’re 

ready. And, they need to be 

chilled for a minimum of 12 

weeks. 

So August would be the earliest 

you could get tulips to flower – 

around three to four weeks ahead 

of normal. For potted daffodils 

and hyacinths you can start chilling 

earlier, in early March, and 

have flowers in early July. 

You can also get unplanted 

bulbs to flower earlier. But instead 

of putting them in at 9 deg C, you 

can put them straight in at 4 deg 

C. Do this in late March and then 

plant them out in late May, they’ll 

flower at least a month earlier 

than normal. 

Summer flowering bulbs 

Summer flowering bulbs (like 

gladioli and lilies) are a little 

easier to manipulate into flowering 

earlier or later, as they don’t 

require a cold period to trigger 

their flowering. 

To make them flower earlier or 

later you can plant them earlier 

or later from July right up to 

Christmas – but only if you keep 

the bulbs in a good condition. 

The eventual difference in 

flowering time will not be as great 

as the variation in planting time 

from July to December. This is 

because the soil and growing 

conditions are cold in July to September, 

and bulbs planted at that 

time will progress much slower 

than bulbs planted in October or 

November. 

Likewise, bulbs planted in December 

will flower much quicker 

as they are doing all their growing 

in warm soil and summer temperatures. 

Nevertheless, planting 

from July to December will see 

a spread of flowering times over 

around two to three months. 

So, as you can see – forcing 

bulbs to flower for a set time or a 

special occasion is by no means 

an exact science. But if it’s still 

something you’re interested in, I 

leave you two questions to think 

about. Firstly, will it ruin the big 

day if the bulbs haven’t flowered 

yet, or are already past their best? 

And secondly, is it worth the risk?

open, or you can come along the new road, Manion Road, 

beginning from Curraghs Road end. Follow this along the 

railway line and you will find us where “261” is on the map. 

While these changes are out of our hands, we would like 

to extend our thanks to you all for your patience and 

understanding as these changes take place. The new road 

will definitely make things a lot safer for everyone, so 

we are looking forward to having it all completed. Once 

the road is all sealed, you will be able to access Intelligro

The owners of Build 7 Christchurch, 

Jamie and Francesca Cowan built their 

own home with the intention of making it 

available for client viewing. 

“Making our own home our company’s 

display home, put us in the shoes of our 

clients while allowing us to demonstrate 

what we can do for them, and as every 

square metre costs money we wanted 

every part of the home to be functional,” 

explains Jamie. 

He says their 235 square metre fourbedroom 

family home is not for just for 

show. There is a reason behind every 

aspect of its design like the ducted air 

conditioning system that was chosen to 

ensure an ideal temperature throughout 

the home, regardless of the season while 

having low running costs. 

They wanted a cosy lounge that they 

used, so chose a cathedral ceiling and 

installed a gas fire. In the hallway, windows 

were installed to bring light into the house 

and thermal mass where the sun would 

help heat the home in winter. 

At the heart of the kitchen is a generous 

island, creating a gathering point while 

quality Fisher and Paykel appliances 

and engineered stone benches give an 

opulent feel. There is practicality too, with 

a freestanding stove that has a gas hob 

and pyrolite oven, and pantry where the 

microwave and an appliance cupboard sit 

neatly away. 

Attention to detail is evident. The main 

toilet has a small washbasin; there is a 

spacious wet room in the ensuite; storage 

has been addressed with built in cabinetry 

in the living area, large laundry with ample 

cupboards, and attic trusses; while the 

large Kwila deck offers shelter from the 

wind. 

Jamie says having their home as a show 

home, works well. While they need to be 

diligent about keeping it tidy, living with 

the design means they appreciate how it 

could be changed to suit individual needs. 

He emphasises the importance of the 

design process and taking time to learn 

why clients are building, as well as what 

they need and want in their future home.

the build, guiding clients and suggesting 

where they might go to choose their 

features and fittings while not pushing 

standard specifications or products. 

“It’s the client’s house. They should be 

free to pick what they want and have a 

real sense of ownership with more control

Your house is on the market and you hope to get a 

good price. While market performance will largely 

influence this, presenting your home at its best will 

help. 

First impressions count from 

the moment potential buyers view 

a property from the street to the 

moment they walk through the front 

door. 

Weed the garden, cut back unruly 

shrubs and prune trees where needed. 

Kill off weeds in the lawn, sprinkle 

grass seed over bald patches and 

fertilise the lawn. 

Indoors, tidy up. Get rid of excess 

or bulky furniture, toys, books, hobby 

items or fitness equipment and if too 

many photos on the wall pack these 

away so the home looks roomy. 

If there is a gap or a room needs 

enhancing, look at what you have. A 

piece of furniture might be painted up 

or an old leather bound book popped 

on the coffee table. Shelves will also 

add depth to a narrow space while 

mirrors may give the illusion of a 

larger space. In entryways, add an easy 

chair, small table, bookcase or large 

vase. 

Awkward spaces such as coved 

ceilings in attics or upstairs rooms 

might be converted into storage 

shelving and the room given a purpose 

as an office, playroom or extra 

bedroom so viewers can see how the

Stow possessions neatly in 

containers, shelving or tidily in 

cupboards; highlighting the storage

Move the pets outside as not all 

buyers will be pet lovers while some 

may suffer pet allergies putting them 

off a house if they see a pet inside. 

If parts of the house look tired, 

consider renovating by painting 

walls, replacing worn carpet, or 

modernising the kitchen, bathroom 

and toilet; rooms that should sparkle. 

Replace tired cabinetry, or the benches 

and cupboard/drawer fronts then 

update old toilets, showers or kitchen 

appliances. Modernising these rooms 

can lift the final selling price. 

Use consistent and light paint 

colours throughout for balance and 

seamlessness, making the house 

appear more spacious. An effect that 

is increased when walls and curtains 

share the same or a similar colour. 

Consider the personality and 

purpose of a room. Bright colours 

lift living areas especially if large and 

open. However, bedrooms are suited 

to calmer softer colours with just a 

touch of bold. Layer bedding or use 

throws for effect along with cushions 

or a stuffed toy in a children’s room. 

With curtaining, smaller patterns or 

plain fabrics are the rule for smaller 

rooms whereas larger patterns make 

spacious areas cosier. If blinds or 

drapes are past their best, replace these 

even if it is only with neutral cotton 

curtains. The effect will be worth it. 

Eco-friendly features will also add 

value for some buyers though not 

universally, however earthy natural 

colours and features are popular. 

Consider who your target buyers are 

likely to be and what will appeal to

Four things you MUST do before buying a home 

Buying a home is a big deal. It’s likely to be the most expensive thing you buy, and it can be a complicated legal 

process. It’s even tougher in a hot market, where there is a lot of competition for a limited number of properties. 

It might be tempting to take a few shortcuts, but failing to do things properly could cause more problems later. 

Here are our top four tasks for home 

buyers. 

1. Research the property 

The real estate agent selling the property 

acts on behalf of the seller, however they 

are also required to tell you everything 

they know about the property. They 

must respond professionally to all your 

enquiries and not withhold any details. 

Remember that you still need to do your 

own due diligence. That means getting a 

title search so you can find out all the facts 

about the property’s ownership, boundary 

and access, as held by Land Information 

New Zealand (LINZ). It’s a good idea to 

get a Land Information Memorandum 

(LIM), which shows information held 

by the local council about the property 

and land. For valuable feedback on the 

property’s condition, get a report done 

by an inspector who has professional 

indemnity insurance and carries out their 

work in accordance with the New Zealand 

Property Inspection Standard. Although 

this all costs money, it will save you more 

in the long term. Sellers may occasionally 

provide some of this information for you. 

If this happens, check that it is up-to-date. 

2. Get legal advice 

Buying property is expensive, and it can 

cost even more if something goes wrong. 

That’s why it’s important to get legal advice 

before you sign anything. A lawyer will 

handle all the paperwork involved in the 

process, including the title search, and 

offer impartial advice. If you don’t have a 

lawyer, the New Zealand Law Society can 

help you find one at propertylawyers.org.

The sale and purchase agreement is your 

contract with the seller. It is crucial to read 

it very carefully and get legal advice before 

you sign. You can negotiate the terms and 

conditions of an agreement, but once you 

sign it, there’s no going back.

What to ask at 

an open home 

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re searching through 

property listings for the house of your dreams. But if you’re not 

careful, home buying can become a nightmare. 

“Buying a property is a complex and 

potentially stressful process, not least 

because it involves such a scary amount 

of money,” says Kevin Lampen-Smith, 

chief executive at the Real Estate Agents 

Authority (REAA). 

“It’s smart to do as much as you can to 

reduce the risk of unwelcome surprises or 

unexpected costs further down the line.” 

In the first instance, Lampen-Smith 

recommends drawing up a list of questions 

to ask about properties you’re interested in. 

“Remember that you can ask the real 

estate agent anything you like about the 

property,” he says. “They are also required 

to tell you everything they know and not 

withhold any details.” 

If you’re not sure what to ask, here’s a 

handy list of questions. Open homes can 

be busy, so ask the agent if you can talk on 

the phone, or send questions via email. 

- Have there been any issues with the 

property, such as earthquake damage or 

water-tightness? 

- Are there any offers on the property, 

or have any contracts been cancelled by 

potential buyers? 

- How long has it been on the market? 

What is the seller’s preferred settlement 

date? 

- What maintenance, repairs or 

improvements have been carried out? Do 

these have permits? 

- Is there a Land Information 

Memorandum (LIM) available or a 

building report prepared by an accredited 

property surveyor? 

- Is the property well-maintained? What 

condition are the roof, piles, wiring, and 

plumbing in? 

- Is the property insulated? If so, to what 

degree (eg walls, underfloor, ceiling)? 

- Is there any risk of methamphetamine 

(P) contamination? 

- If there is a body corporate (usually for 

apartments), what does that entail? 

- Are there any issues with neighbours 

or planned developments? 

“If you are seriously considering making 

an offer, you will need to do your own 

research and seek professional advice. It 

may well become your home, so you need 

to know as much about it as possible to 

save unhappy surprises later,” Lampen- 

Smith says. 

“Knowing the right questions to ask is a 

good starting point.”
