Selwyn median house prices top in Canterbury region Jackie Derrick • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SELWYN HAS the highest median house price in the Canterbury region. The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand says Selwyn’s median house price has reached $550,000 showing the market is continuing to grow. Changes have been made to the way REINZ data is collected with regions that were formerly reported together, separated for more accuracy. Previously, Selwyn was included in South Canterbury’s data. The latest May report said the median price was up five per cent in comparison to last year. Agent Jackie Derrick of Matson and Allan Real Estate Ltd said there is a healthy demand in all price brackets and she is seeing a continuing list of Christchurch buyers coming to Rolleston. “Rolleston, in regards to Selwyn, is the area where there is more demand and the boom is significant . . . people can see the growth or Rolleston is also being supported by additional infrastructure out here,” she said. She said Leeston has become more popular and is driven by the affordability of houses. Property Brokers lifestyle/rural real estate agent Chris Moore said while in the main centres, including Lincoln, Rolleston, West Melton and Prebbleton, activity levels are still good, the market for the outlining areas such as Darfield and Leeston are becoming harder. •Turn to page 4 Chris Moore
