Bridget Rutherford spoke to him about the nailbiting Ranfurly Shield defence against Otago, his nickname, and sharing coaching tips with his sister When did you start playing rugby? At about age four I started playing for Linwood. I’ve been in the game ever since then. I went to St Andrew’s College and played right through there, I played for the first XV, it was pretty decent. Did you play any representative rugby through school? Yes, I played through Canterbury 18s, the schoolboys South Island team, and the Canterbury Colts. Then I went overseas pretty early on to Japan at 19. I ended up staying there for threeand-a-half years. They wanted a young lock and just got in touch with me. I love the culture, the food’s brilliant and I learned to speak the language. I’m pretty rusty now. Where did you head from there? I came back and had a year in Christchurch and played club rugby in 1997 before I went over to the United Kingdom. My wife, Claire is, English. I met her in Japan, and so I went and played for Nottingham for a couple of seasons. How did you two meet? She was up there teaching English to Japanese school kids. We met at a party one night, the ex-pat community wasn’t that big there and I fortunately ran into her. Where to from Nottingham? After that I went to London Irish (Rugby Football Club), IN CHARGE: Canterbury coach Glenn Delaney spent years coaching in the United Kingdom, before returning to Christchurch. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER down to the bright lights of London. I had three years playing there, which was great, and I enjoyed playing in the premiership in England. It was a big challenge. Then I went to France and had my last year playing in the top 16 there. But I got injured and had to stop playing. I smashed my ankle. It was in a line-out and came down and landed on someone’s foot. I had to have my ankle fused and it was impossible to play on it again. Was that how you came into coaching? I went back to Nottingham as a player/coach, but when I couldn’t play, the coaching side just took over really. I had started training to be a teacher before I went to Japan, so that was always part of the plan, which is similar to coaching. Then I went into working in commercial recruitment so all of a sudden things changed. I did the Nottingham coaching part-time for a year-and-a-half, and they asked if I’d like to do it full-time. I did eight years there, which was a decent amount of time and a lot of fun. I went to London Irish, where I had played, for four years after that, and finished up there a year ago, when this job materialised. Why did you want to take up the Canterbury coaching job? Well, it’s the ultimate challenge, it’s one of those things I’d just love to do. Scott [Robertson] got the Crusaders job, and I had always kept in touch while I was overseas so I knew what was going on here. Speaking of Scott Robertson, he is well-known for his break dancing. Do you have a party trick like that? No (laughs). You’ve just got to leave some things to the professionals, and I genuinely think he’s a professional break dancer. I could never even consider competing with him as a break dancer. Do you have any nicknames? Yeah, Glaxo. I got it when I was a kid. At the time, the company Glaxo was making baby food, and the suggestion was that this formula built massive babies, and I was a big baby. It’s stuck ever since. Pretty much everyone calls me that. Canterbury is a relatively young and inexperienced team this season. How do you make sure the young players are up to it? The kids have been coming through the structures here, and you often wonder who’s ever going to replace the guys who’ve left, but Canterbury has done that for 20 years. It’s about making sure when those players get the opportunity to push in there, they’re ready. We have lost experienced guys this year, but young ones like Brett Cameron, Josh McKay, Caleb Makene and Braydon Ennor really showed they could step up. They showed that in the Ranfurly Shield match against Otago, even with a couple of players struck down with illness. They did. The way you get through is you have to have a good squad. So when we got to that point, everyone was ready. The best moment was Jed Brown scoring the winning try. Initially he wasn’t even named in the team, but he went on, and he turned up at the right time and scored that try. What went through your mind when he scored in the 76th minute? There’s a couple of fortuitous things. But at times Otago scored off errors from our side. I always knew we had it in us to win and we had to dig pretty deep. And it showed the resilience the team had, with some of our players ruled out. You have another shield defence tomorrow against the Southland Stags. Is there more pressure in a shield match? There’s always pressure on a shield game, any coach would be telling fibs if they say otherwise. It affects people in different ways, it’s great people feel the hope. It creates a competition within a competition and everyone wants to win the shield. It’s that powerful impact of the log of wood. What do you want to achieve this season? We’ve got to make sure we’re giving ourselves the best opportunity to win the competition. We’ve got to make small steps each week to make sure we get better, and so it allows us to keep moving forward. You’ve got to take care of the here and now, and what we’re doing today and tomorrow. •Continued on page 14
