Delaney had a close run thing<br />

with the Ranfurly Shield against<br />

Otago but in true Canterbury<br />

style he was never that worried<br />

the shield was going south. For<br />

us Cantabrians it’s all about<br />

planning and having a never say<br />

die attitude.<br />

Delaney has good rugby roots<br />

– he cut his teeth for Linwood,<br />

probably at Linfield Park, a complex<br />

I helped raise money for as<br />

a kid with runathons during my<br />

not so stunning time in a green<br />

and black jersey.<br />

This week in history saw the formation of the Canterbury<br />

Automobile Association on <strong>September</strong> 4, 1903. On <strong>September</strong><br />

5, 1985, French agent Dominique Prieur, convicted over<br />

the bombing of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, was<br />

transferred from Mt Eden Jail to Christchurch Women’s<br />

Prison. On <strong>September</strong> 5, 1988, Stanley Reid, New Zealand’s<br />

longest serving prisoner (43 years) died in Christchurch. On<br />

<strong>September</strong> 6, 1878, the railway to Dunedin was opened. On<br />

<strong>September</strong> 7, 1850, the first Canterbury Association settlers<br />

sailed from Plymouth, England, on the Charlotte Jane,<br />

Randolph and Cressy. On <strong>September</strong> 7, 1863, Christchurch’s<br />

first murder trial took place. G. Lumley was convicted. On<br />

<strong>September</strong> 8, 1850, the Sir George Seymour leaves Plymouth<br />

with settlers.<br />
