Wheelie bin markers

SIGNS HAVE been
painted on St Albans
streets to remind residents
where to put their rubbish
bins on collection day.
It comes after people
living on Colombo St were
leaving their bins on the
newly-formed Papanui
Parallel cycleway, forcing
some cyclists to ride on the
road.
The city council has
painted bin stencils along
Colombo and Rutland Sts
to educate residents to put
their bins on the side of the
road, rather than the grass
verge or cycleway.
It has also dropped off
pamphlets showing them
the correct location.
Before that, residents
had not been told where to
put them.
City council acting head
of transport Lynette Ellis
said 260 stencils had been
painted along Colombo St,
while some had also gone
on parts of Rutland St.
“They are not intended
to be repainted as they
should last two to three
years before fading out
and residents will become
familiar with the location
of the bins,” she said.
“Residents were sent a
letter showing the correct
locations and the stencils
are a reminder.”
Ms Ellis said it cost
$3000 to paint the stencils.
At this stage, they were
only on the Papanui
Parallel cycleway route at
specific locations, she
said.
REMINDER: White signs
have been painted on
some St Albans streets
to remind residents not
to put their bins on the
cycleways.

progress of the build every
10min from 6.30am to
5.30pm.
“We encourage people
to view the time lapse
camera and watch the
rebuild in real time. The
tower rebuild should begin
to become quite noticeable
on Lyttelton’s skyline
in the next few weeks,”
Heritage New Zealand
general manager Nick
Chin said.
He said it will be a
welcome reminder for
locals of the familiar
Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease
landmark that stood at the
site since 1876 but has been
missing since the February
22, 2011, earthquake.
The Timeball Tower will
be finished by the end of
April.
An internal concrete
The Star
shell which will house
the automated timeball
mechanism is currently
being constructed on site.
The stone masonry work
will take place once it is
completed, using as much
of the original heritage
fabric as possible from
the station following its
deconstruction.
“It is really fantastic to
actually see something
physical appear at the
Timeball site again,” Mr
Chin said.
When completed the
tower will overlook the
harbour and township,
with the timeball dropping
at 1pm daily.
