A vibrant new addition to the school’s entrance is the mural, the children designed and created in 2017, under the expert guidance of Vicky Peacock. In 2018, the extremely successful ‘Agri- Maths Programme’ will be continued, authentically integrating the school’s rural world with the children’s learning. The Kapa Haka group will also be performing at a variety of local community events throughout the year. The launch of the Sheffield P.E.A.K. Learning Model in 2017 is set to be embedded in 2018. This will ensure all key stakeholders in the children’s learning collaborate effectively through consistent language to accelerate all of the school’s learners. Two new purpose-built teaching spaces were added to Rolleston School (Te Ahi Kaiomako) in 2017 and an app allowing parents and caregivers easy access to school information. With an ethos of striving, driving and thriving students at Rolleston School learn to become ‘express’ learners who are engaged, resourceful, self-managed and prepared to experiment and persist until they achieve success. New principal for Windwhistle School At the close of 2017, the Windwhistle School community farewelled their Principal of seven years, Frances Nimmo. The school’s new Principal, Bronwen Seaward previously fulfilled a number of teaching and management roles at Darfield High School, and more recently at West Melton Primary School. The school’s role will increase in 2018 with the new students joining a happy school community where individual needs are recognised and met, and there is considerable support from parents and extended family, many of whom also attended Windwhistle School. After an amazing foundation year, welcoming new learners and their whanau into Lemonwood Grove, the school looks forward to its second year of establishment. “Families are moving into Selwyn from around Canterbury, New Zealand and across the globe leading to a diverse and unique school community and culture,” says Principal, Sean Bailey. Enrolment is expected to be close to 160 at the start of 2018 however, during the year this figure is likely to rise due to the building activity in Faringdon. At Lemonwood Grove, the school’s curriculum is lived out through its school wide values of Grit, Responsibility, Integrity and Thinking. “It’s great to see our learners demonstrating these values when collaborating and relating to others,” says Sean. During the foundation year a number of school events and experiences were held with outstanding support from the community. A number of schools and organisations also visited Lemonwood Grove, interested in how learners’ needs are met, and their curiosity and creativity sparked. Lemonwood Grove is fortunate to be part of a ‘Community of Learning’ where they work closely with 11 neighbouring schools to increase student achievement. One new initiative for 2018 will be providing regular opportunities for the school community to visit and learn about ‘why’, and what they do in terms of teaching and learning. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday January 17 2018 27 BACK TO SCHOOL 2018 Exciting changes for Ellesmere College Some exciting changes are in store for the Ellesmere College community this year. At the end of 2017, the school farewelled Gavin Kidd, a Principal who hugely influenced the school during his time at Ellesmere College with the introduction of new innovations while gaining respect for his quiet purposeful leadership. First task for the Board of Trustees in 2018 is finding a new Principal who can carry the school forward, a process that will involve the whole school community. Plans are also in place for a new building at Ellesmere College with construction expected to begin soon. As the new school will be constructed on the fields, there will be no disruption to student learning while the football field and athletics tracks will be moved so the sports programme is not affected. Ellesmere College continues to be progressive, introducing new initiatives that enhance teaching techniques and increase effectiveness in the classroom through exciting student learning opportunities. Examples include the art exhibition held last year, in which students exhibited the work they had completed throughout the year. In 2018, special emphasis will be placed on Years 7 to 10 so they are prepared for their senior years ahead, building on the good results that Year 11-13 students have been achieving over the last few years. Student well-being has also been a focus and the school is part of the Grow Waitaha, a Canterbury-wide initiative that aims to improve individual student well-being. This programme addresses bullying, resilience techniques, anti-suicide work, and other well-being initiatives.
