BITS AND BOBS ............................... MAGAZINE OF THE MONTH: WORKS THAT WORK Literally one minute before writing this month’s review, I saw a headline on the Guardian’s new tabloid-shaped website, about the EU saying that by 2030 all packaging must be reusable or recyclable. It’s been driven, of course, by the curse of plastic, that chemically created material once seen as the saviour of the world and now seen as a villain. But fifteen minutes before that, I brought home from the shop a copy of Works that Work. In a loose sense, it’s a magazine about design that contributes to a good life. So, pretty obviously, there’s not going to be much about plastic in there. Except that a number of articles are about designing things to last: obviously, in our throwaway culture, a good thing. And guess what? There’s a piece about a ‘chair that is everywhere… a design that has become part of everyday life all over the world’. Cheap, comfortable and long lasting, you might have sat on one on the seafront here in Brighton, in a food court in Singapore or in someone’s back garden. It’s made of plastic. That villainous material turns out, like most things, to be both bad and good. Well I never. Works that Work is full of stuff like this. In the current issue, you can find out about hospital clothing that is good for patients as well as quick-drying, about how reintroducing returnable deposits on glass bottles is dramatically reducing the use of - yes, you guessed it - plastic bottles, and the rise in vertical farming which is increasing food production in urban places. And, of course, much, much more. All of which makes it a shame that this is Works that Work’s last issue. We should have given it a shout-out before. Our apologies to them but it richly deserves its moment in the Viva spotlight.
