BAU - it’s what feels safe and
is the path of least resistance,”
Jo says.
“But adequately preparing
for the future, which is
good for all of our community,
means actively creating it. The
future will be what we want it
to be, and we can deliberately
choose to construct the world
we wish to experience. It is up
to us to actively engage and
put the energy into constructing
it together.”
She says the biggest threat
we face in the wake of the
change is that people are
unwilling to commit the time
to adapt quickly enough.
“If we do not embrace
A
massive year is ahead,
with a wide range of
digital and entrepreneurial
programmes in place
for people in all stages of
business, as well as for the
next generation.
PoweringON, the initiative
which gives SME owners digital
assessment tools and the
connections to implement digital
products and services, will
continue to extend its network
of local providers – digital,
financial, legal, marketing and
sales experts.
PoweringON helps owners
maximise multiple opportunities
to advance their businesses
with advice, training and
support, including finding new
markets, more efficient business
systems and new revenue
streams, by using online tools
and services.
PoweringONPitch
PoweringON will hold a Pitch
event at the Bay of Plenty
Digital and entrepreneurial skills for all ages
Business Expo on March 7.
With two judges confirmed
- SODA Inc chief executive
Erin Wansborough, who runs
Callaghan Innovation-funded,
founder-focused incubator
SODA in Hamilton, and
SME Network founder Tenby
Powell.
The pair will provide input
and advice to tech businesses
whose goal is to help SME
owners power-on even more.
CO.STARTERS
Following on from its first
successful programme in
November last year, the second
intake of CO.STARTERS
students will start in February.
This nine-week, community-facilitated
experience
will again bring 10 newbie
business people together one
evening a week to get a good
solid start, validating and testing
their ideas ahead of committing
capital and effort to
launch.
LIFT
The LIFT programme, which
provides Callaghan Innovation
co-funded one-on-one and
network support for founders
to prepare them for market
with scalable businesses,
also launches this year.
Applications have already
been received.
MADVentures
The ‘MADVentures’ initiative,
which encompasses experiences
designed for youth who
want to ‘Make-a-dent’ in the
future, will bring more coding
and computational thinking,
entrepreneurial learn-by-doing
and intergenerational mentoring
opportunities to Bay families
this year.
Codebrite is one of
MADVentures’ main programmes.
Previously available
in Tauranga, the initiative is
now connecting active community
members in Te Puke
and Katikati in a region-wide
these technologies, as they
emerge and as they change,
work with our young people
(who easily pick up the new
technologies), and use our
experience of business alongside
new tools and thinking
to help them turn their skills
into revenue-generating services,
and in turn improve our
business outcomes, we will be
impacted in ways which can
not be undone.”
Jo says we must also “reassess
our risk tolerance and
realise change is happening
right here, right now, it won’t
be ‘put off ‘til tomorrow’”.
So what are you going to
do? Do nothing and let yourself
and your organisation or
business be overwhelmed;
ignore what’s happening and
risk being replaced; wait and
miss the opportunity to build
deep relationships in the community
so you can keep learning
together? Or will you seek
out the Bay’s community-led
Digital Enablement Project
and join the collective of
youth, SME owners and startup
founders – locals making an
impact by taking the initiative,
trying new things, and committing
time to shape our region’s
future for the benefit of all.
While Tauranga City and
Western Bay of Plenty District
Councils are contributing
some funding support to build
the infrastructure and opportunity,
Jo says, “the biggest piece
of support this project depends
5
network of resources and support,
Venture Centre co-founder
and director Pascale
Hyboud-Peron says.
“Parents can support their
children to do more than sport
outside-of-school this year.
They can have fun while learning
to code, be problem-seekers,
problem-solvers, share
knowledge and work with different
types of people in teams,
on is people”.
“Those who commit, and
follow-through, participating
to make sure Tauranga and
Western Bay continues to live
up to its reputation as a collaborative,
forward-thinking
community, which embraces
new ideas, entrepreneurs and
initiatives – a place where
people love to work, live,
and play.”
too,” she says.
“Having an opportunity
to use digital tools with the
help from community members
who use them to make a
living allows kids to be more
creative and ambitious in their
work as they get a real world
perspective – the only limit
is imagination when there is
a community who give their
support,” says Pascale.
