UNHCR seeks
donations for
Yemenis
With Yemen on the brink of
famine after more than two
years of civil war, the UNHCR
is calling on the world to
donate to save the lives of
acutely malnourished 2
million children and countless
others trapped in the conflict.
With its water infrastructure
and other basic public
facilities in ruins, UNHCR says
Yemen is also facing the
world's worst cholera
outbreak.
“With massive displacement,
immense humanitarian needs
and staggering poverty as a
result of the conflict, most of
those displaced in Yemen are
now struggling to survive,”
said UNHCR's Representative
in Yemen Ayman Gharaibeh.
Yemeni families are now
struggling to meet their
primary needs including
shelter, food, water and
healthcare.

UAE doctors pledge 'Million Hours
of Giving' to treat needy patients
ABU DHABI: UAE doctors have launched a “Million Hours of Giving”
volunteering campaign dedicated to treat children and elderly patients in
underprivileged areas across the world as part of their commitment to the
Zayed Giving Initiative for the Year of Zayed 2018.
The doctors made the announcement in a letter of thanks to His Highness
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and
Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, reported the
Emirates State News Agency WAM.
Emirati Heart Surgeon Dr. Adel Al Shameri, CEO of the Zayed Giving Initiative
and President of UAE Doctors, said Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed is a leader,
and role model, who dedicated his life to providing the nation and its citizens
with safety, security, stability and prosperity, and he deserves all the
appreciation and loyalty received from individuals for his unlimited giving to
the UAE's youth.
Dr. Al Shameri said the campaign will allow doctors to express their love to
Sheikh Mohamed by contributing via community work and volunteering in
mobile clinics and hospitals around the world.
The UAE had conducted countless medical missions, including funding
construction of clinics, donating badly need medical supplies and equipment
to different conflict zones and underserved communities in the Middle East,
South Asia, Africa and many other parts of the world.
In January, the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) dispatched urgent food aid to
victims, the underprivileged and returning displaced residents in Usaylan
District of the Shabwa Governorate in Yemen, after the three-year siege by
the Iranian-backed Houthis militias.
While distributing the aid, which included 5,000 food baskets, Mohammed
Saif Al Muhairi, Head of the ERC team in Shabwa, congratulated the district's
leadership and residents after its total liberation, and the return of normal
conditions after the tough conditions they experienced during the
occupation by the Houthis militias.
EU countries send emergency aid to
flood victims in Albania
TIRANA: Albania got
much needed help from
some of its neighboring
European countries which
donated water pumps
and hoses, life vests,
p o w e r g e n e r a t o r s ,
raincoats and water
boots, blankets and
clean-up kits, after the country experienced massive floods in December.
The delivery of these items was coordinated via the EU's Civil Protection
Mechanism and in close cooperation with the Albanian authorities.
Overflowing rivers have damaged road infrastructure and properties as well
as displacing some 21,000 people.
The first aid to Albania through the Emergency Response Coordination
Centre came from Greece, Slovenia, Austria, France, and Slovakia.
In addition, the European Commission announced emergency assistance of
€190,000 in response to serious floods. The funding is part of the EU's overall
contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
