Sharjah International Airport
Evolving & expanding
Sharjah International Airport dates
back to 1932, rich in history far older
than the combined chronicles of
events formed in the years that followed
after the seven emirates agreed in 1971 to
form what is now known as the United
Arab Emirates.
For more than 85 years, SIA has been an
important economic component of the
UAE's remarkable ascent as an influential
powerhouse in the Middle East.
“Since Sharjah made aviation history when
the first flight landed at Al Mahatta runway
in 1932, the airport has steadily and
exponentially grown over the years to be a
leading passenger and air cargo hub in the
region,” Ali Salim Al Midfa, chairman of the
Sharjah Airport Authority, proudly said.
“Through a series of path breaking
initiatives, it is now a world-class modern
international airport that had over 11.365
million passengers passed through in 2017.”
Despite its relatively smaller size compared to
other major airports in the UAE, SIA is
making remarkable feats welcoming as much
in part because of its prominence as home to
the thriving Air Arabia, the first low cost
carrier (LCC) in the Middle East and North
